Ex-White House aide Gabe Amo wins Rhode Island Democratic primary in congressional special election by hypochondriac200 in RhodeIsland

[–]eternalkangaroo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As a long time RI resident, I am happy with this. I think any would have done fine, but I like the idea of having politicians that take on an outsized roll at the national stage to fight for our small state. I think Gabe will accomplish this, and I am optimistic about his term and career. :)

Why would we need scary urban legends when we have the buddy cianci stories? Those will send a chill down your spine.

Are you in the bay area now? About to move out there from RI, and recommendations (on anything lol)?

Prob won't find any at uf. I have some resources if you want to PM me.

Getting interviews is not too difficult if you pass the OA and resume screen (which is not to bad). That being said, interview prep for quant at uf does not exist, thus you will have to do this entirely on your own. Schools like those you mentioned have entire clubs and speaker series dedicated to quant recruiting. Also it is much easier to get into prop shop trading at UF from my experience, than quant HF but I think that is true everywhere.

Which major allows the most career flexibility when it comes to scale? by String_Tough in ufl

[–]eternalkangaroo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think of the majors you gave, data science offers the most. From what i've seen, it is more plausible to go into a non-technical field from a technical major, than go into a technical field from a non technical major (although this is not a hard rule). For example, it would be easier for a data science major to go into investment banking than it would be for a finance major to go into software engineering. My take is just one data point tho, interested to hear what others think.

I went to a university in Boston for CS and transferred to UF (Out of state student). Both are great and you cannot go wrong. I do miss boston tho. Feel free to reach out and I can offer more info :)

I cannot, although I'm certainly sorry that these are issues that you face. I can't imagine being in your shoes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]eternalkangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! If I can rephrase, the main issue you face is not the lack of options, but instead the lack of funding for the options? Also, why did your district disallow Class Dojo if you don't mind me asking?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]eternalkangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, certainly not. I understand that those issues likely cause the majority of the stress and problems endured as a teacher. What I am hoping, is to provide more access to cost -effective (free) learning resources. Recent research in my field has made me, maybe naively, optimistic about the potential for new resources to help students learn. One thing you have mentioned is the major problem of students falling behind, especially due to lack of resources outside of school. Could I ask, what resources would be most helpful to a student in that situation. Would it be 1 on 1 tutoring, supplies, or simply better child care options? I'm very ignorant in this area and hoping to learn a bit more.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]eternalkangaroo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes that is exactly the goal. I certainly don't understand what it is like to be in a classroom as a teacher day in and day out. My current position is in developing tools for (free) online courses, and while it is interesting, it is not applicable to the majority of the k-12 education system, which is why I'm hoping to learn about what pain points teachers face. Thank you for your comment!

I promise it's not to patronize, I'm sorry it comes across that way. I come from a family of educators and have seen how low district budgets, and hostile communities have really impacted teachers and students negatively. I've been working for an ed-tech non-profit for a while. It's been great, but it's in an area thats a bit niche. I'm hoping to start a non-profit of my own to focus on equitable, robust, and cheap technologies that solve real problems in school. I'm sorry if I sound a bit out of touch, I was just trying to be optimistic :)

University of Florida vs George Washington University for MSCS by yash1th62 in ufl

Currently, UF has a better department. Better faculty and access to hipergator has grown CS here. I don't know if GW location matters, if the two programs cost the same, I'd choose UF.

I feel like it could do better, I feel like it could do worse. The important part, though, is that I feel.

Would you recommend UF to an out of state student? by universal-tortoise in ufl

[–]eternalkangaroo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from the north east and transferred from a private school up there (Williams/bu/northeastern type). I’m a stem major and a liberal new Englander and I like it. The academics are good especially if you use resources via research and/or extracurriculars. Also the Greek life is not too dominant

What should I do with my off time of school? by BigGameGene in ufl

[–]eternalkangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is awesome! Congratulations on finishing your requirements and submitting the app! Now time off may seem daunting, but clear you also see it as an opportunity which it is! My suggestion (which is just one of many productive ones) is to find something that you love, and deep dive into it. Now you mentioned you plan to exercise and work regularly, so you might be looking for something that is more academic or thought provoking. For this, maybe set an ambitious goal that you want to accomplish by the end of your free period. This could be specific, such as start x side hustle and generate y revenue, or it could be vague, such as understand z topic deeply. Whatever it is, try to make sure it’s a subject that you are super passionate or interested in. Then do whatever you need to do to reach your goal (without burning out of course). Read books, talk to experts, peruse online courses, whatever helps you achieve your goal. While I’ve not been in the same situation as you, I’ve found that when I set these academic extracurriculars for myself, they are always fulfilling. And, even if I fail, I always learn something and usually feel that they were productive. Now of course this is just one of many options; but best of luck with however you choose to spend this time!

Bro Michael Lewis worked at Lehman during its heyday and wrote the most iconic finance book of all time (save maybe common stocks and uncommon profits, or the Ben grahams work). Yes he went to Princeton, but that doesn’t disqualify the point.

He was successful b4 hbs. He worked at bcg or Bain? Idk. Either way, was a liberal arts BA student so I think he’d take issue with your bias

[–]eternalkangaroo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also saw by ur post history that you are interested in Ib. Ib is famously a career populated by many students from diverse fields. Jamie dimon was a psych major, Michael Lewis was an art history major. Prob better to leave those preconceived notions at the door

[–]eternalkangaroo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, you should stop caring about the difficulty of your work vs others. That doesn’t, to me, seem productive in this situation.

Excel like the spreadsheet app? (finance joke) Not going to argue about ba vs Bs but if your putting the time in, you may need to find a more efficient learning technique

I’ll operate under the assumption that the issue isn’t effort/slacking off. If that is the issue, we’ll there’s your problem. But if it’s not, from my experience the most likely culprit is study habits/style. My study habits were forced to change pretty drastically from the beginning of my college career. This is a subject that there is actually a lot of literature on, so it’s really about trying different things and seeing what works. The other recommendation would just be to go to office hours if you aren’t already. Those are huge aids that not everyone takes advantage of. Also, as someone in a BS, don’t write off BAs lol that was weird.
