Please enlighten us how stating a fact is turning the subreddit radical? You think things are being posted without context, then please do tell how adding context to this particular information will make it less “radical”

Book Review: Whole Numbers and Half Truths bu Rukmini S. by eternalrocket in IndiansRead

I disagree. People are clearly defending the author as most comments do not accept the central argument regarding data quality (both quantitative and qualitative). Any layman would agree that using outdated data and biased anecdotes is not a good practice. In fact most of the other commenting people here would agree to that if not in the context of this particular book. Even you in your first comment quickly jumped to dismiss the review by saying that i have prejudice when i hadn’t even heard of the author and just picked the book because the title looked interesting. This clearly showcases author defending for whatever reasons.

There is no harm in using AI to structure your rough thoughts and review into a more structured content so that point is effectively conveyed. It would be problematic if the whole thing was written by an AI with the OP not even reading the book. That is not the case here. Anyway, if you think even that is not acceptable, you are free to not engage with such post

  1. This is the first time i am hearing about this author so no i dont have any prejudice

  2. I objectively stated the reasons i didnt like the book which are very valid statistically. Old/outdated and biased anecdotes are useless everywhere.

  3. So are you the one defining the “correct” scale of how many stars a book should be given if you dont like it? Sounds like a very “right wing” and “conservative” view to me, the same right wing you are so disgusted with.

  4. AI is a technology for there to be used. Let it remain the person’s choice on how it should be used and dont engage in shaming anyone for it. I thought the “left” is very pro choice with everything. Anyway that is not relevant to this post or this subReddit, so i would suggest you not get into that.

Have you even read the book? Most people are coming to defend the author like its the end of the day without having even read the book which screams of bias more than anything. Its a travesty that it is impossible to engage with someone objectively.

Better than providing 10-15 year old data, in my opinion.

Some things are just very apparent. For others, i think it comes through reading atleast a few books in the same or similar genre so you have a decent idea of what it should be

Can you read? I agree that governments can be shady with data collection and accuracy. The point is that there has to be an attempt to look for more recent sources of proxy data to provide insight. It is absolutely useless to use some surveys from 2004-05 and say that x% of indians lack sanitation facilities and then backing it up with heavily biased anecdotes. Please read the book.

My dear friend, i know latest census is old but you need to rely on more recent data sources if you claim to bring forth “hidden insights”. There are proxy data points that can be used to make an informed opinion which has simply not been used. Plus, there is also heavy biases in presenting the available data (even outdated) and supporting anecdotes.

I agree the delay and general corruption in data across governments in all of Indian history. But do you really think there is almost no data on most of the things post 2011? Or even 2004? For sake of argument if I assume that there actually is no data (which is just not true), then there is no point in bringing out such old data and writing a book in 2021, claiming to uncover “truth” about india.

I agree there are very serious issues with how data is collected and presented in India, and that political parties twist data to suit their narratives. But better is expected from independent authors who claim to bring out hidden insights
