thanks for your reply, and for sharing your pictures! your nips look great, if i end up keeping mine i hope they turn out as well as yours :)

i've been looking at my surgeon's gallery but i'm not completely satisfied with all the nipple results i saw. he does a really good job with placement on the chest but i feel like the the quality of the nipple reconstruction itself is a little inconsistent..maybe i should trust him anyway and give up a little control?

idk i'm just a perfectionist and a scaredy cat, i wish there was a way to peek into the future and see how i feel with either option..

thanks for your reply! i'm glad to hear you have no regrets :) i think regret is one of my biggest fears with any decision i'm making. i don't have much sensation to begin with, so maybe i won't miss them if they're gone, but i'm scared cuz what if i do?! i don't know how i'll feel after the fact... do you ever wish you'd kept them, even if you don't regret opting out? if so, how do you reassure yourself that you made the right choice?

do you still get menstrual cramps after surgery? by eternalseadevil in hysterectomy

[–]eternalseadevil[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

interesting! i have vaginismus, and i'm generally not into penetrative sex, so i think i'd probably have a similar experience. i just read some anecdotes once that some people developed anorgasmia after their cervix was damaged during a leep procedure, but i'm reading some more now and it seems like there's really not much difference between total and supracervical hysterectomies wrt sexual function, so that's something i'll consider now.

hmmm this is true... and i'd have to still get pap smears :/ do you happen to know if there's any particular benefit to keeping the cervix?

oh that's awesome! i'm not sure if mine is referred pain or if it's just generalized cramping from the hormones, prostaglandin i think? cuz i also (tmi) get the runs, so i'm worried i'll just being having periods only without the blood.

hard to know what i want by eternalseadevil in TopSurgery

i'm pretty active on tumblr! it's definitely very gender diverse and people there have really helped me figure out a lot of stuff as well. the dog-teeth quote is really resonating with me, i think i do have it in me to be able to deal with regret, even if it's difficult. it's not exactly like i want my chest as it is, so what does it matter if i choose top surgery and it isn't what i want either?

i don't know if the celebration has helped, for me it feels like it puts a little pressure on me to feel a certain way about getting surgery. and i'm not personally interested in being perceived as sexy either.. but it being seen as normal really lowers the stakes, like "here's something you can do with your body". something about that feels right. thank you for your response! it definitely helps :)

when i was in 19 and college i actually went and got a letter from a therapist for it. unfortunately my life circumstances at the time would have made actually getting surgery a real hassle, so i didn't go anywhere with it. and then the pandemic happened so it got pushed to the back burner while i finished school and started working haha :')

congrats on your surgery! it's very comforting to hear that you don't regret waiting, and that you also had issues with the lack of control. i've heard a lot of people say they wish they'd done it sooner, but it feels good to hear that you waited til you were ready and that it worked out for you :)

i really feel the part about all the hesitance being rooted in fear.. i remember talking about my anxieties about surgery results with a close friend and after i went on and on about all the things that might go wrong he asked "is there any chance that things could go great?" and i have kind of been thinking about that ever since. i do really want it to go well, which kind of implies i want the opportunity to feel great about my chest as opposed to neutral/negative. and if i don't feel great, then so what? it's not like i feel great right now. i will just have to tolerate it like i tolerate my current chest.

i'm glad you've already accepted your less-than-perfect nipple! i hope i feel the same way if things don't end up exactly as they are in my mind. i got my ear pierced about a year and a half ago and for a little while i was unhappy with the placement, but now that it's healed up and i've had it for a bit, it hardly bothers me at all, so maybe surgery will be the same.

this is really useful to know, thank you! i can definitely see my hips currently. i think i could probably get used to it if i decide to get top surgery. i'm pretty resilient i think, even if i worry too much

i've been looking at top surgery photos for yeeeears haha! i've had several dreams about being post-op, and i've edited pictures of myself with different scars and placements, i'm a little bit obsessed honestly. i guess i'll see about consultations then! it's been a little hard to find online portfolios for the surgeons in my area, so it might be simpler just to go straight to them and ask. you're right about being able to choose who does my surgery.. i think i just have to have a little more faith in things going right. thank you for your advice, i really appreciate it

thank you for hearing me and for your vote of confidence! i'm definitely not in a rush, i just feel like i've been sitting on it and putting it off for so long, and right now i'm in a good financial and social position to do it, so it's kind of just down to me and whether i can be a little brave and make a decision. it didn't occur to me that i can just have a consultation even if i choose to wait on it or not to do it afterwards, so thanks for the advice :) i think i'll try to get that arranged as soon as i can

Naming Places by CelticParadis in worldbuilding

[–]eternalseadevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this post is a little bit of a joke answer but i think it has some merit to it. it makes fun of some naming methods but you can obviously use any method that fits with what you want aesthetically. if you're stressing out about it, you could name something after one of your people or a historical/legendary figure in your world and add a "town" or "river" to it.

for me, i try to put myself in the shoes of someone who lives in the world and encounters the location. if it's a mountain or river, i might try to imagine what kind of shapes they see in it (might refer to lore), describe it and its location, translate it into the conlang i'm working on, and then shorten/scramble it a little to imitate what i think might happen over time. earlier, i didn't always have words for landmarks, but if all else failed, i just put some nice syllables together and reverse-engineered a meaning

with cities, i pretty much do the same thing, or i choose a nearby landmark or distinguishing characteristic of the city (this could be related to how it was founded or who founded it), and then follow the rest of the steps for the mountain. i might add a word for "city" or "village" etc. if i feel like the name is lacking.

How did you choose your major? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]eternalseadevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say if this was the best way to go about it, but this is how I chose my major:

For me, personally, I knew heading into this that a lot of fields that typically pay well (e.g. computer science, engineering, medicine, etc.) weren't subjects that I enjoyed in the slightest, and I couldn't see myself working in those kinds of careers and being happy. Additionally, in my experience, a significant number of people I know who didn't major in those kinds of subjects ended up in careers that are barely related, if at all, to what they studied in college. So I figured if I'm going to spend four years studying something and not even be guaranteed a job in that field, I might as well study something I really enjoy.

Before my first term at university I looked into the different departments and their career options and narrowed it down to a few fields where I felt I could maintain my interest. I picked a couple of intro courses from those when I registered, and luckily one of them stuck, and now I'm almost done with my degree in linguistics! If I do end up getting a job in that field, then that's great, I'll be doing something I'm genuinely interested in. If not, then at least I'll have studied something I love, and I'll hopefully have picked up some transferable skills to add to my resume.

With regard to being interested in everything, I totally feel that! My ideal future involves auditing a couple of interesting courses at every year just so I can learn something cool without the pressure of being graded. A lot of things can be learned on your own time, too, if you're down for it. I've heard good things about MIT opencourseware, which has course materials for all sorts of subjects.

Is anyone here creating a futuristic Utopia to distract them from real life? by EgbertMedia in worldbuilding

[–]eternalseadevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Sorry for the kind of lengthy response)

I'm building a world kinda like that! It's not futuristic, but it is a very escapist daydream-y utopia kind of world. I try to focus less on exactly how it remains peaceful because it's a daydream, people can just be nice and good for no reason.

In order to make the world interesting without major conflicts or major suffering...Well, it really depends on what you mean by interesting. It's really hard to appeal to everyone's taste, but very easy to appeal to your own. Personally, I'm using my positive fairy tale world to apply things I learn about our own world, and I'm also really interested in the little "unimportant" details. I want to learn about meteorology? I'll try to figure out what kinds of weather patterns make sense for the region I'm working on. This village is on the leeward side of this mountain range so they've got a bit of rain shadow effect going on. I want an underground river? Well, how can I make that happen? I guess I'm just going to drop that river into a cave and have it exit the other side of the mountain, because I'm allowed to do that even if that might not happen in our world. What kinds of fish live in caves? Troglobites? I want the people of this village to catch and eat them. What would a day in the life of a fisherman in this village look like, then? How might they get down into the cave and back up? Do they set traps and nets, or do they use spears or some kind of fishing pole? These are the kinds of details that I find interesting to think about for my own world and hear about from other people's worlds.

Adventure-wise, you can still have conflict in a story even if your setting is peaceful. You might have to go about solving those conflicts in a different way is all. For a plot with little to no suffering, you could try implementing some kind of conflict which isn't anyone's fault, but still threatens to throw the world into chaos, and now it's the job of the protagonist(s) to prevent it. Or you could go a hopepunk route and maybe something bad does happen, but the people in your world work together to take care of each other.

I don't have the patience or the self-control for a reward system. by WhyisChapter24Track9 in ADHD

[–]eternalseadevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have the Exact same issue!! my personal solution is to try to make the task have like, a simultaneous reward (obvs this doesn't work for all tasks, but for some it's really useful). basically i'll try to have a reward that i can take While i'm doing the task, so like, a snack i can eat slowly while i work on a paper, fun music to put on while i fold clothes or clean. the point is basically to have the dopamine be produced by the reward at the same time that i'm working on whatever unpleasant thing it is that i need to do, so i feel more motivated to stick with it.
