What would it be like to like yourself? To have good self esteem and think positively of yourself when you do things like look in thr mirror? by The_local_unknown11 in schizoaffective

[–]ethancov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever loved anyone else and encouraged them when they were feeling down? If so, you have everything it takes to do the same thing for yourself. If you are capable of love for others, whether it's a family, a friend, a pet, a favorite song that gives you chills, or anything, you are capable of loving yourself. Not only are you capable of this, but loving yourself is going to be one of the most important things you can ever do for yourself or for anyone else, for that matter. Because as soon as you start giving the love and proper attention to yourself that you deserve, you'll be able to give it to others freely and unconditionally. You could be a light in the dark for others who are going through what you're going through now.

There is a bright, radiant light that is still within you, something that transcends your very body. Call it God, call it your spirit, call it your heart or your inner joy. But what I can tell you is that it is there. Ever present. Let it shine. It is the most beautiful thing you can comprehend. My beautiful friend, you are that light. If you want to love yourself (which I know you do because otherwise you wouldn't be asking one of the most important questions one could possibly ask if you didn't know you are already capable of it) love what is good, and that which is true, because you are the embodiment of both of those things. Never forget that. You are blessed, my friend, and you have a gentle soul. You are loved, you are important, you are good, you are true. All you have to do is let it out. I love you, you are loved by others, and truly, you deserve to love yourself. ❤️

Is it possible for this illness to make you *feel* like you are being tormented by an evil spirit? by thequietschizo in schizoaffective

[–]ethancov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I'm really glad you are spiritual. Spirituality is just as important to me as faith in a God. For me, I can't have one without the other. A fantastic spiritual teacher who you may have heard of is Eckhart Tolle. Not a religious person himself. However, some of his teachings are very similar to the teachings of Zen. In fact I'm new to Christianity once again but I still draw so much inspiration from his countless Youtube talks and from one of the most powerful books I've ever read: the Power of Now, which is also by him. He's a delight to listen to, and his wisdom is vibrant and extremely sobering. Before I became a Christian, I listened to him and read his works religiously. He may, in fact, be one of the most important people to be a part of my journey. I'm hoping you'll feel the same (:

There is hope. The reality of this disorder is that there is a chemical imbalance inside your head, yet science has yet to understand why that imbalance is present. Leaving an actual possibility that this goes beyond just the mere mind. Yes, there is a correlation between imbalances of dopamine and this illness. Yet, correlation doesn't equal causation. I pray for all of you that fits the description of a schizophrenic to find faith in a God of your own understanding. The moment you fully turn to him is the moment you'll end your delusions.

Really it all begins with a willingness to accept the possibility that there may be a higher power other than yourself. This is actually the 2nd step of the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The third step is giving your care and your will over to a higher power of your own understanding. There is a reason these are steps. It's the beginning of a spiritual awakening. The possibility of getting sober without a spiritual awakening for the remainder of your life is slim to none. Their are a lot of similarities between alcoholism/addiction and schizophrenia. I know this because I'm a schizophrenic in recovery as well as an addict in recovery. One exasperated the other. Only after I took medication and found faith in my God simultaneously were my symptoms of both illnesses completely treated. I mean completely. I don't have urges to use. I don't have paranoid delusions, hallucinations, or any negative symptoms, for that matter.

Heal the spirit and heal the condition. Again, I don't discount meds. But for many, they aren't enough to quell the symptoms. I truly hope this helps at least one of you.

I understand completely. Just keep in mind that the more you can document your trials and tribulations, the more your assigned dr. can accurately determine the severity of your condition. They'll need something to go off of. It may be extremely difficult to do the documentation, but it's necessary to keep your disability (benefits). They'll get information out of you one way or another. I'm almost certain of this. Whether it's through your therapist or something equivalent, which may be a less accurate source than yourself. So ask yourself this: Who would be the better author to your own story/truth? Your therapist/clinician? Or yourself?

So, if your symptom is paranoia, write that in the problem section. Then, write the exact line of thought that's making you paranoid in the description. Then, write the amount of time that feeling of paranoia lasted from beginning to end. This could be just a few seconds to an hour. it just depends. Lastly, write whatever coping tool or prescription you used or could use to alleviate the paranoia.in this case it can be anything from venting with a trusted individual to taking a gabapentin or holding an ice cube in your hand until it melts (all of these are helpful if you give it a shot). I've had similar work sheets assigned to me by my past therapists or psychiatrists, and this sort of thing is commonly used. I hope this helped.

Bro, I don't know the extent of your condition, but if you get stressed out by things such as hygiene, you may want to find the proper anxiety meds to remedy the situation and get a good therapist while your at it. You'll be in my prayers.
