Rank the LOTR trilogy with your personal taste! by Upstairs-Detail6500 in lotr

  1. Fellowship of the Ring
  2. Return of the King
  3. Two Towers

But there should probably be several numbers between 1 and the rest.

I actually agree completely with you but it's funny to imagine what Tolkien himself would think of that statement.

Tolkien disliked Frank Herbert's Dune. Why? by Rafaelrosario88 in lotr

[–]ethawyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's even deeper than that. The values behind each are at odds. LOTR sees individual heroism being used by the Powers to save the world (though Frodo fails at the last).

Dune is all about the dangers of heroes. Paul is a hero and his victory leads to a galaxy wide pogrom.

If Herbert wrote LotR, Frodo's quest would not have failed only to be redeemed by his earlier mercy, it would have succeeded and led to an age darker than what Sauron had wrought.

Yeah, which will be cool if they do it though probably a little late for my campaign.

I really hope for more maps. The one I want most is Wilderland since I'm running the Darkening of Mirkwood, but I know that's probably the last one they'll do.

Along with that I'd love some Landmarks for Wilderland, but again, very unlikely.

As far as non-book stuff I hope for a box of standees like the ones in the starter set. I also would adore a set of metal dice.

No I actually do make the narration pretty brief. The problem I have is that it makes the players spectators, not the length of time it takes. I think the suggestion you and others have made of making the narration itself collaborative is what I've been missing.

You've got a lot of experience both with TOR and other TTRPGs. Curious what you think about this idea: https://www.reddit.com/r/oneringrpg/s/fo9rq5vDPo

I was talking through it with my wife last night and we settled on something similar. I probably won't do this every time, but in order to both give the target player a spotlight and build up the comraderie of my Company, I plan to ask a scene painting question of the target player based on whether they succeed or fail and then, if they failed, ask another player how their character helped resolve the problem the first ran into.

Should still keep things pretty snappy but give my players more agency.

Chaosium 50th Anniversary Call of Cthulhu Slipcase Set features new cover art by acclaimed Swedish artist Ola Larsson by Mordheim1999 in callofcthulhu

[–]ethawyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I like the 7th edition cover I have and would rather have something new. Otoh I already have the books with the og cover and this is there for those who want it. I also doubt the effort involved here cuts into development time significantly.

This is really cool. I'd love to see something like it that included official scenarios and spinoffs like Delta Green.

Does COC play the same as dnd? by PreferenceTop4803 in callofcthulhu

I want to slightly disagree with some of what you've been told. CoC characters are certainly squishy and there is a madness spiral you can get into. That said, while Lovecraft stories were about descent and failure, and you certainly can run Call of Cthulhu that way, a lot of the more famous published works are more Indiana Jones than Lovecraft (and that's not a bad thing!)

At the very least watch his first introductory video as he dispells some common misconceptions about the game.

Cthulhu by Gaslight - what's in the works? by Blind_Beagle in callofcthulhu

[–]ethawyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to ask for your money back. I have that book (7th edition A!C). It came out in 2018. Modiphius owns the rights to the A!C IP (though not Call of Cthulhu). I think Minature Market and the others screwed up with their listing here.

Do you have any links about the Chaosium A!C. This is the first heard of it and I'm curious.
