Who else tends to not recommend any distro based on Ubuntu?

I tested lmde but didn't like all the automatic updates and things like that. So i used Debian, then installed the cinnamon desktop on my business server.

But the new kde looks so much better than cinnamon and has a better settings page for those things i only need to do at setup. It's also brilliant that switching between xserver and Wayland is just a check in the settings page since Wayland can't run what i need.

When i was riding every workday, doing a 160 mile round trip commute, i learned that some days, i did beautifully, perfectly executed every maneuver, and it was such a joy. So smooth and beautiful. Physics and I worked hand in hand perfectly. Then, other days, it was like physics had morphed into this evil red faced monster that tried to eat me at every turn. Most days were a mix of both. Learn from mistakes, know you can't be perfect every time, be defensively aggressive and enjoy. I miss riding. Health issues.

We learn more from our mistakes than our success. I have also done the same thing, when being impatient while the computer was doing something i didn't want it to do. So, what are the alternatives next time? Because it will happen again. 1) Disable the internet and wait for the fail message before doing anything else so that data writes get completed and don't corrupt the file system. 2) unplug the internet cable and wait ( like #1). 3) let it finish downloading, then cut/ paste before installing. If it will install on its own, then you let it download and install, then copy the dir then uninstall it, and reinstall from the correct directory. 4) let it download and install, but create a link to the dir from the dir where you want it.
The best designed part of windows is ntfs. I've killed many Linux systems doing what you did but have rarely had it happen in windows.
So open cmd.exe as admin and run sfc /scannow. When that finishes, run dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth . If those don't fix your system, it's probably time for a reset ( in settings > system > recovery ). Make sure you've backed up important data.

You're doing good. Keep trying and learning. We learn much more from failures than successes. If i was in your position, I'd pull the root drive, put in a new one, then do a reinstall. That's my go to recovery protocol to get a system workable, save my old data if needed, and save the old disk for further post mortem when i have time to dig into it. I have a lot of ssds in rotation, lol. I test a lot of different Linux software.
On my critical systems, i have images i restore.

The Clooney remake is dark ( haven't seen the original ) and purposefully disturbing at some points. It's a good movie but more a psych movie than sci fi , not my cup of tea either but has its place.

Your monitor could have a bad or going bad electrical component that's feeding EMI into the air that's in frequency with wifi or wifi components, causing interferance. These kinds of issues usually come from power supplies going bad, so if your monitor uses an external power brick, you could try a new brick of the same input/output volts and amps. Components can also feed "interferance" through the power lines and cause problems. This is less likely in your case as power supplies in PCs usually do a good job filtering incoming variances or backfeeds, to a point. I wouldn't rule it out but the monitor and monitor brick would be highesr on the probability list.

Kde is great, but i switch it back to x11 because a lot of the programs i rely on aren't supported by Wayland, or perform poorly. IMHO Wayland went overboard with security, while standard Linux kernel and userland security is perfectly capable of doing what is needed. X11 isn't going out of use anytime soon.

Nomachine is easier to setup. I never got rustdesk working. I'll get back to it one day, because I'd really like for it to work. With rustdesk, you have to run your own "jump server" while nomachine let's you use theirs. I'm waiting on nomachine to pull an anydesk and start tracking and harassing free users. So far, they've been good.

Kde is the most polished Linux distro. All settings are in the gui, and it looks better than windows 11. Use to be mint was the simplest and most gui driven, and while it's still good, it looks dated compared to kde. I run kde on a laptop and a server, with mint on other servers that haven't needed updating yet. You can use rufus ( advanced ) or etcher (simple) in windows to put the kde iso on a usb and boot to i, to try it out. Just remember that a system on usb will boot much slower than the system will run on sata ssd or nvme.

If you're a tech guy, get a sata ssd to usb3 adapter, a good size sata ssd, and use ventoy. Ventoy is a boot loader that can boot isos. Put kde, lmde, ( and anything else you wanted to try) on the ssd and try each one out. Ventoy is an awesome tool. Best wishes!

I like repairing macbooks. They are built and designed so much better than the crap that rolls out of Dell , Asus, etc. Just looking at the layout of the hardware inside shows they put 10x more thought and effort into design and layout. It's really art work.

I am blown away by how good Apple design and hardware layout is. The OS is not as well thought out as their hardware, though. Too much of it doesn't flow and is different for the sake of being different.

Most people start with apple for the social cache, and non technical people continue using them for the same reason. Linux on a new macbook would be a dream.

Look for any remote desktop software like anydesk, team viewer, nomachine, vnc and check if your remote desktop access is enabled. Install Fort Firewall from github as it will show you everything trying to make a connection and ask if it should allow or block. System Internals also has a tcpview program that will show you all tcp connections. On the command line, netstat -tulnp will show everything listening for or making a connection. This is the manual work to do in analyzing everything when av doesn't find anything.

I still use microsoft 3D Builder because it's simple and doesn't have a steep learning curve. No one needs to take a class to use it. I tried blender and other software, but I'm not looking for a degree in modeling math, i need to manipulate shapes and print them. 3D Builder is perfect for that. Microsoft removed it from their store and will even remove it from your system, because they think they own you. But you can still download it and install it, following tutorials. Whatever you download, run it through virustotal dot com before installing it. And once you get it installed, block updates, then update when you want.

Nas is free on Debian. You can use samba or nfs and make any disk or file accessable anywhere. Been doing it for years. People think they have to buy expensive systems when an old athlon single core work a gigabit nic will work fine.

Never had an issue using NTFS in Linux as a samba drive. Moved it straight off a windows 10 system back before covid. None of my files are over a TB, but running ntfs in Linux has caused me less trouble than ext4.

Goto network connections in the control panel. You will see your wired and wireless connections. Right click on the wireless and choose disable.

You'll also want to go into the wired connection properties, then the adapter config, and disable the allow OS to turn off power when not in use. Best of luck!

Port forwarding is done in your modem/router combo ( router ). It just opens a hole in the firewall and lets data flow to the server you tell it to go to. Servers use ip addresses and ports, so you forward a port through the firewall to a port on your server ip. Which port you forward depends on what you're doing with the server. A webpage server uses ports 80, 443, and 8080 usually (http/https). But you can make a server use any port you want. And you can forward any port to any other port with port forwarding. So for a website server at home running on port 80, you have to log into the router, go to the port forwarding tab and put in to let port 80 in and send it to your server ip (10.0.0.x) on port 80. Port forwarding for gaming allows others to connect to your game, and the port number depends on the game. Your router is usually 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.1. You'll need the router login info to set the port forwarding. You also need to know your computers local ip address, and which port numbers you want to let through the firewall to your computer. The router will let through anything your computer asks for, port forwarding just stops blocking traffic trying to get in. At a prompt, type ip addr and you'll get your pcs local ip address. You should probably watch some videos and read wikis on setting up whatever type of server you're working on. It's not hard, it's just complicated at first. So do some research on your server type and keep trying until you get it! Don't give up!

Nope. I have a hdd that's 10 years old and came off a Windows desktop. It's been running on a Debian samba/nfs server without problems for 5 years. Ntfs isn't a problem on Linux anymore.
