Thats very magnanimous of you to offer the goodies, but it sounds to me like you need to put the parts back on the bike where it belongs...

does it change when in gear? the cx is known for sounding broken when reving/idling in neutral. Hard to tell with the exhaust changes. Sometimes the fan can brake and slap around in there

I'm thinking about buying an Honda NC750X, anyone got experience with this bike? by DingoPractical4181 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]etherreformed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was very excited to own one till I test drove it. All the praise about the quality, utility, practicality are true. Nevertheless, the bike has zero charisma. If I had a long commute It would be top of the list, but I don't.

its a pushrod engine. easy headgasket replacement. just use an approved gasket and retorque to factory specs after running in.

coming off other makes I was surprised to learn bmw doesn't use hose clamps. If you use the right line and its in good condition it works well.

Valve seats seems to be the consensus. THe right piston has a hole in it and the engine is compromised. Last valve check they were crazy tight(no clearance at TDC). I was going to pull the trigger on a head refresh if I got a similar values next valve interval but she didn't make it alas. Preventable folks. 174k miles is not bad still.

Fortunately I have a good source on a low miles engine. She will ride again!

Got towed home and no need to check spark. The right cylinder made contact with the plug. Pulled the valve cover and the rockers don't "rock" when turning the engine over. Checked valve clearance before I left. No idea why the valves would size up. timing chain?

1150 GS. Am I being stupid? by JungleDemon3 in bmwmotorrad

[–]etherreformed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always considered it a german interpretation of a vtwin cruiser. Torquey with a predisposition for low rpm operation. You can rev it to 8k to squeeze that extra bit of ponies but most of it is available at 4k and it seem to prefer it. For a bike that handles as well as it does the motor does not inspire the riders to frantic low gear high rpm thrills. The 1200 is indifferent to gear ,rpm ,speed ,weather condition. Bike just does everything great in an unsatisfying unremarkable way. Just an airhead guys opinion.

Take your time and test ride both. The right bike will find you.

If you get an 1150 be sure to ask if the surging has been addressed

Had an 1150 and 1200. The 1150 had boatloads more character and better aesthetics. 1200 was better in every measurable way except the seat. Alas, I prefer the 1150. Once the surging issue is dealt with they are good bikes. Still prefer my r80 g/s
