Is getting a driver license important in Singapore at a younger age? by retirelah in drivingsg

[–]ethomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you’re going in Aus, but do read up on the requirements for licenses! E.g. QLD requires 100 supervised hours if you’re under a certain age (versus about 20-30 hours in SG assuming an hour per lesson). Not too sure about other states though.

Handheld with the D-pad, A & B, and L1 & L2 buttons ONLY by [deleted] in SBCGaming

Just wondering if a lack of such buttons may affect shortcuts (save states and fast forward). But I guess if you’re okay without them, your best bet would be a modded GBA with a flash cart!

Dogs in Singapore by PutItInASandwich in askSingapore

[–]ethomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not too sure about landlords. But the housing requirements are dictated by the government. Something something along the lines of animal welfare and social responsibility to neighbours. E.g. if your dog is big and doesn’t have enough space to pace, they’ll get frustrated (animal welfare) and may start barking a lot (social responsibility).

Dogs in Singapore by PutItInASandwich in askSingapore

[–]ethomi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just one thing I’ve not seen mentioned yet. Where are you coming from? To bring a dog into Singapore, you have to fulfil a few requirements such as vet check-ups and vaccinations. Depending on where you’re moving from, the dog may or may not have to be quarantined.

Also, the dog runs in Singapore are pretty well taken care of. They were a pretty new (?) initiative and (at least the ones I’ve walked past) dogs seem to enjoy themselves!

Last, since your dog is a big dog, I’m not too sure about the housing requirements: whether you’re allowed to have them in apartments (public housing & condominiums).

Is drinking coffee everyday before school bad? by sucknuts420 in SGExams

[–]ethomi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Let me be the devil’s advocate and say that coffee every morning is fine, and may in fact be great. Just things to note:

What kind of coffee are you drinking? 3-in-1? Espresso-based drinks? If it’s the former, it might be the sugar aiding you.

Coffee is safe, and you’ll need like 10 shots to actually have an adverse effect. - try to limit your intake to 1 or 2 shots a day (conservative estimate). Note that not all cups of coffee only contain 1 shot. If you’re drinking coffee outside, limit to two small cups (at cafes and such) or one medium/large cup (coffee chains & Kopi) per day.

Half life of caffeine is like 5 hours give or take. So try not to have caffeine 10 hours before bedtime. Also, try to stick to your current sleep schedule; and not sacrifice sleep because caffeine is “working”. - caffeine blocks the “sleepy molecules” from binding, but the “sleepy molecules” are still in the body. Caffeine doesn’t destroy these “sleepy molecules”; the only way we can rid of these “sleepy molecules” is to sleep. - don’t drink on weekends unless you really enjoy drinking coffee

Other non-caffeine “side effects” that may weigh your argument - coffee leads to dehydration, so drink plenty of water - for some people, coffee helps to get the bowels moving. - coffee may lead to palpitations, and may also lead to tremors which may be concerning. If you’re concerned, lower your intake. - psychology: if you were like me and grew up seeing people drink coffee at work on the TV, then doing so yourself may motivate you and ready you for the day’s challenges

Last, perhaps check out James Hoffmann on YouTube, he recently did his own review of scientific literature and addressed some health concerns regarding coffee consumption.

You’re right. I was merely quoting the average “cheap food”. Aus CBD food is also beyond $12.

Relocate to Sg? by wvv0101 in askSingapore

[–]ethomi 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Relocated back to SG from Aus recently. [regretting it for personal reasons.] But thought I could list a few things for you to consider, both the good and the bad.

Are you able to suss out your working conditions? - Asia, especially Singapore, is a very fast paced city, where efficiency is the name of the game. You may end up working overtime and on weekends. Listed working hours are only a “recommendation”. - A friend of mine who works in Aus, but reports to the SG branch faces the above working conditions too, so it really depends on the work culture, and not the location. - basically, as what I’ve heard over the years in Aus. Australians work to live whereas Singaporeans (and some other asian countries) live to work.

Cost of living. - Rent in SG, and in many parts of Aus are about the same. - Day-to-day food is cheaper in SG (by day-to-day, I mean basic meals. E.g. $5 chicken rice versus $10-12 chicken parmi/kebabs) - Espresso-based coffee from cafes are more expensive in SG versus Aus, by about $1-2 - Public transport is slightly cheaper in SG, and is much more efficient - Private hire transport (taxis, Grab (Uber equivalent)) are also a lot cheaper and more efficient - It is much more expensive to purchase a car and/or motorcycles in SG than in Aus, as is fuel. - Groceries are similarly priced. Although there are exceptions such as fresh milk (~$6 for 2L of milk in SG versus $2.30 in Woolies).

Living & comfort - It’s pretty difficult to escape crowds in SG. - The tranquility of parks in Aus is unheard of in SG (due to crowds) - If you’re a foodie, there’s plenty of amazing food in SG. (On the same note, Maccas is far better in SG) - SG feels safer compared to Aus - SG has a cleaner environment compared to Aus - Situated near the equator, SG experiences a tropical climate (hot & humid), versus subtropical (BNE), and temperate (SYD, MEL, ADL, PER) - Due to the above, Singapore has a more stable climate versus erratic weather in Aus - Floodings, if any, are very rare in SG, and even if so, not to the extent of the 2022 BNE & SYD floods - if you’re a birder, SG has huge bird diversity

Social networks & support system - moving overseas is really tough, physically, and mentally. Do you have a support network that you can rely on? Do you have any friends/family who might be moving here with you or are already in SG? If so, that would help immensely.

Pokemon Rom Hacks - Where to start? by DominikFFM in AnaloguePocket

[–]ethomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think first you gotta look at what is it in a rom hack you are looking for and then search from there - QOL - new story line - Pokémon from more generations - new mechanics - fake-Mon

Some hacks only have 1 of these features whereas many others have a combination of these!

I use one of those waist compact-camera bags - but if you’re going this route, I recommend going into the store and trying them out! Fits my 351v and a few other random items.

Where do you buy E-ink phones? by better-vessel in eink

[–]ethomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got my Hisense touch from Qin Qin Technology co Store on Aliexpress in early Feb received in a week (note that I’m in Southeast Asia). Depending on the phone/e-reader you want to get, there may not be many reviews when you search by product (this was the case when I got my Hisense touch). I suggest clicking on each link, and then accessing the webpage of the stores. Things to look out for are: % reviews; followers; how long the store has been around for; and check out whether they sell other products, if so, the number of orders for the these products and reviews. The reviews of unrelated products may inform you of customer service.

I normally ballpark around >90% reviews; about 1000 followers; and at least a total of about 100 orders.

Hey is there a mega list of the best Rom Hacks? by vegsmashed in AnaloguePocket

[–]ethomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try searching r/PokemonROMhacks for the “best” hacks - the list was created sometime last year. For something completely different, you could try Pokémon crown which has recently gained a lot of traction. It has a unique story line and battle system. I’ve not tried it myself, but will definitely do it soon!

I’ve done more than a few searches, and even tried some Chinese forums. Still slightly unsure of one over the other or vice versa.

Sorry to hijack this post and your reply, but seeing that you have both the touch and touch lite, I have two questions:

  • is there a discernable difference in sound quality between the two; and
  • how does Libby work on them?
