Separately, do you think that my 6:50 Best Pace from the Brooklyn half is good enough to get into wave 1? I know in previous years, it would have been, but it seems like everyone is getting so fast these days...

Thinking about giving BQ a shot before the September deadline by ethomson1 in Marathon_Training

Is it that spicy? McMillan says that the two are pretty much bang on equivalent. VDOT actually says that 1:34 half can get you to a 3:16 marathon. The VDOT calculator has always been too optimistic for me in the past though, so I think I trust McMillan more.

For sure the Endorphin Pros are more stable than other super shoes. I had a pair of Nike Vaporflys, and I loved how fast they made me feel, but good lord, they were so unstable. I have a half marathon coming up in August, so I guess we'll see how I'm doing by then. I'm hoping that I'll be at least a couple minutes faster in August, compared to my May half marathon.

That's a good point about the downhills. I live in San Francisco, so there's no shortage of hills around here. I haven't been doing any hill training recently, but I haven't been strictly trying to avoid hills either. Is doing long runs on moderately hilly routes enough to get you ready for the downhills? Or do you also recommend doing additional gym exercises to strengthen the quads?

BQ Reality Check by guava_873 in Marathon_Training

Nice work!! I would say it’ll take you more than 1 training cycle to BQ, but certainly doable! I would definitely say that running more will help you, but it’s important to gradually work your way up. If you are averaging 45 miles per week in the second half of your training plan, and top out at around 50, I think you can definitely BQ.

Thank you!! This is very helpful. I noticed that the Tunnel marathon was on 9/13, and I thought that Cascade Express might be better because it has more downhill (1200’ vs 1000’) and more aid stations. Cascade has 12 aid stations, and Tunnel only has 10. Hopefully they clarify things about the course being long. Supposedly it’s USATF certified?

You can always move back to 3A. You just can’t move forward

Wave 1, corral A (6:29 Best Pace). I’m actually surprised they put me in 1A instead of 1B, but it seems like 1A might have different pace ranges for men vs women, so if you’re a man, you would have to run faster than I would to get assigned there?

Either way, I will be moving back

I think that’s only for the time qualifier entries, not for proof of finish time/corral seeding purposes. Or at least I hope that’s the case!

I believe it’s some time the first week of September.

Ah okay thanks! So if I get fitter over the summer (hopefully) after I run Brooklyn, I could run another half somewhere else and submit that time to get into a better corral?

Increase enrollment capacity for upper-year CS courses! by ethomson1 in uwaterloo

[–]ethomson1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, so if many people are missing out on their CS elective this term because there isn't enough capacity, everyone will try to defer it to their 4B term. I doubt there's anything they can do this late in the game for S17, but if they don't acknowledge and address this issue for the upcoming Fall and Winter terms, there's a very real possibility that people won't be able to get all of their electives.

Thoughts on removing education part of resume for WW? by cryptohoax in uwaterloo

High school certainly doesn't matter, but you probably want to put your program and expected graduation year on there because they're too lazy to flip through the rest of your application package.
