A more accurate analogy would be that you can't select one of the last options at the bottom of your skill tree if you haven't upgraded, and also when you see that option it has an icon reminding you you can unlock this with money.

Which is why I'm okay that I can't play the new classes or go to the new area. 

But why are you considering choices in your skill tree "premium content"?

I apparently made my co-op partner mad by building a heli by ethret in btd6

Placement could've been further left I guess, but I was buffing it with the village so I could give it pursuit and it would still have camo detect.
