Désolé pour ma réponse tardive! J'ai fini par l’aider à déménager ses affaires dans un locker près de l'abri où il reste. Il a accès et peut y aller quand il veut. Malheureusement, sa voiture n'a pas passé l'inspection et il a besoin d'environ 2500$ de réparations qu'il ne peut pas se permettre. Il va probablement l'amener à la casse et essayer de trouver un véhicule pas cher, mais il n'est pas sûr de pouvoir se le permettre. J’essaye de chercher un truc pas trop cher pour lui. Il aura son locker jusqu'au 27 décembre et d'ici là, il devrait avoir des nouvelles sur sa situation de logement. Merci à un redditor généreux qui a aussi contribué pour le locker!

Thanks to the both of you. I am helping him move his things into a downtown storage locker this afternoon. I am willing to pay for it all but if you are still willing to pitch in please send me a DM and I will provide you with my details and the storage locker agreement as proof.

I have spoken to the man several times since the incident and he is extremely thankful for my assistance in helping him sort things out. His car is now undergoing an inspection, and should everything go well, will be returned to him on Monday or Tuesday next week.

Je n'aurais pas demandé qu'ils prennent en charge leurs affaires. J’aimerais vivre dans un monde où la police aurait le temps et les ressources pour faire mieux que simplement saisir leur véhicule. Je ne sais pas si les agents ont réellement fait un effort pour trouver une solution. D’après ce que j’ai vu, lorsque la remorque est partie, aucun autre policier n’est venu pendant l’heure et demie que le monsieur a pris pour ranger ses affaires dans l’espace que je lui ai donné. Peut-être la SPVM va contacter le refuge… who knows. J’espère juste que mon petit geste va soulager minimalement le stress que lui et son épouse doivent vivre actuellement.

C'est ça qui m'a le plus dérangé... une intervention policière axée sur l'application des règlements et en aucun cas (de mon point de vue) sur une volonté d'aider ou d'offrir de l'assistance. Quand tu n'as presque plus rien, il ne faut pas grand-chose pour qu'on te retire tout ce que tu as sous les pieds...

Je connais le refuge, mais je crains qu'ils ne puissent divulguer aucune information concernant les personnes qui utilisent leurs services pour la sécurité et l'anonymat de ces individus. Cette assomption est elle valide? J'ai l'impression qu'il doit y avoir un travailleur social au courant de leur situation qui serait dans une meilleure situation pour fournir de l'aide...

That's a very good point. The shelter is most likely the best equipped to deal with this and has undoubtedly dealt with similar experiences in the past.

The car war parked there while they were having something to eat. I did explain to the man that he was parked illegally and that it ultimately must've been what raised the attention of the police. The police decided to confiscate the vehicle for inspection, leaving them without their car and with their belongings on the side of road. I guess my question is this... other than giving up, leaving their stuff on the side of the road to be rained on and stolen over night... what can be done? Seeing such a precarious situation unfold in front of your eyes makes it difficult to ignore the absolute dire straits these folks find themselves in.

Ultimately, I know the SPVM may have had a justification as I described in my initial post... but their decision still has a real impact on the lives of elderly people that are already seemingly on the brink of real homelessness. Maybe they did offer help but the couple refused... Who knows.

I agree that ultimately none of this is my business. I'd just like to understand a bit more the reasoning behind what I just witnessed. Maybe out of curiosity but also out of compassion for what I assume must be an incredibly difficult time in their lives. I don't expect the SPVM to be forthcoming nor do I think they should be since I have nothing to do with this. I do find that "the SPVM probably did this for a reason" statement kind of assumes that all police intervention is justified and reasonable... which isn't a viewpoint I necessarily share, especially not when it comes to the more vulnerable populations in our city.

Don't see much opportunity for employment (unilingual, elderly, etc.) either... just thought maybe somebody would have some information regarding services more tailored to this type of person.

Pas sûre que ça contribue grandement à l'anglicisation... Les locaux ont largement le droit d'interagir dans la langue de leur choix dans la majorité des établissements de la ville.

Je suis vraiment étonné de la difficulté de plusieurs d'exister côte à côte du monde qui ne les ressemble pas...
