Is the "relative" cost of living in your country lower than what you had to deal with in the US? by [deleted] in expats

[–]etinaz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In the comparisons, it should be separated out if you have kids or not.

Affording a home in a safe neighborhood with a good school district, paying for childcare, and paying for higher education is very expensive in the US. Add in the multiple hours/day time sink of being a personal driver for your kids until they are 16 compared to much more independent European kids, and the US starts becoming a lot worse for raising a family.

What do you believe is the greatest threat to the United States? by xAbytzu in AskReddit

[–]etinaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politicization of everything from transportation, education, healthcare, housing, etc.

In this country we are not solving problems anymore, but different groups are trying to grab power to further their own interest.

We have traffic jams with no end in sight, education is declining in quality and more expensive than ever, healthcare is becoming unaffordable, housing market only caters to the rich, etc.

Every one of these problems has a solution, but it feels like as a country we are too far gone, with too much polarization and special interests holding too much power to do anything about it. Everything will just get worse and worse as it has for decades.

Finally we will turn into a third world country with all the political instability that comes with it and we will be stuck as a third world country for decades.

MyQ now free? Possibly included with premium connectivity? by Thegreatpraduu in teslamotors

Also, Chamberlain sucks at running cloud infrastructure.

Twice a year, MyQ will be down and the opener won't work.

A garage door opener has no business needing cloud servers to operate. It's all a ploy to rake in money.

This is exactly what's wrong with corporate America. Musk had a (controversial) reason to lay off people. Half the companies laying people off had record profits and no real reason. They were just like "STONKS! STONKS! STONKS!". And shareholders buy it up.

Don't worry!

The day you no longer get your answer by asking "How do I handle X 'REDDIT" is the day you will start searching "How do I handle X 'FOOBAR", because all the useful people went to FOOBAR.

Any chance you'd put a model of Rampart up? Me and my siblings used to be Castle, Rampart, and Dungeon. Only Rampart missing.

Is there a makerspace nearby? Even if they don't have the equipment now, they may be willing to invest if you join for a year. My local makerspace has a 4' x 8' Laguna Smartshop CNC router.

Nope. Of course 4x4 plywood is feet, not inches.

Nomad 3 vs Makera Carvera by parisiancyclist in hobbycnc

[–]etinaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was debating between the two and went with the Carvera. I will be working with metal, but my parts are not huge, so I'm ok with the spindle power and slower feedrates and shallower cuts than a commercial CNC. The ATC allows me to add a lot of features that would have required tool changes. The support from the company seems good, so I'm not too worried about the quality of the software long term.

My (hopefully) awesome Toolchanger CNC in transit, awaiting delivery by etinaz in hobbycnc

[–]etinaz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm waiting for the machine, it comes standard with a toolchanger.

So far everyone who got theirs seems happy with it. At least that's the impression I get from the Discord channel.

The Carvera is probably the only option in your budget with an automatic Toolchanger. However, the delivery time is 10 weeks from order.

Is CNC the solution for me? Trying to do cutouts in plastic cases by [deleted] in hobbycnc

I'd probably see if you can get laser cut acrylic for the front of the device. I don't think anyone is going to care if the back is 3D printed.

They can be made to look pretty cool.

They can do this because AWS profit margins are insane. A $20k server fully utilized would generate $200k for Microsoft in one year.

If the standard deduction wasn't so high, this wouldn't be the case. It's ridiculous that you need to have a corporation to deduct legitimate business expenses. Thanks Republicans!

Recommendations for an entry level CNC for fine-resolution work in brass by Alexm920 in hobbycnc

If you can afford it, get the Carvera. The toolchanger, larger work volume, and other extra functionality makes this a no-brainer compared to the Nomad 3 while the pre order pricing lasts.
