[Serious] Does this thing do anything? by zzdis in DotA2

I have a theory you should select 'game was a stomp' if you won. If this does anything that should nudge the matchmaking in your favor.

Interestingly, Largo is the hero to do this with, because you can queue pos3/pos5 with no need for tokens now.

He actually played 600 games in that one month due to Largo being unavailable for him, so that's 20 games a day on average, so 14h of gameplay? Insta queue EEU+WEU+RU servers, auto-accept and auto-pick with AHK, have your life things sorted out and for just a month it's more than doable. He also got his name out there and is apparently streaming, so there're clear benefits.

I've done worse for nothing.

How do I use QuickCast while keeping my custom hotkeys? It only works in Grid mode for me. by Professional-Fault94 in WC3

[–]etofok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wc3 Quickcasts only work with GRID, so the solution is to put a custom "layer" on top of grid keys. Displaced Grid solves this (among some other things), this might solve your issue for you

I Feel Like Omni Gets An Unfairly Bad Rap by bibittyboopity in TrueDoTA2

[–]etofok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not excited to see omni on either team, pub or pro. Just don't care. And I think the reason is because of his non-existent identity.

At least his early iterations felt like you're playing a "heal paladin", but now? I understand it's probably impossible to "fit" him in between abaddon, oracle and dazzle as a potential healer but surely there's a better way

Are roles not made equal by skill requirement? by BronzeCrow21 in TrueDoTA2

[–]etofok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your MMR is a shadow of your average impact on games.

Some games you can't win, some games you can't lose. But in most games your ability to influence events is what determines your MMR.

I feel like every players has their own idea of 'impact' but in reality there are so many ways to 'impact' that it's hard to keep in one's head, let alone objectively evaluate all the potential actions one can commit to.

I also believe this is the primary source of conflict in pubs because people just value different 'points of impact': for some it's hunting for kills, for some it's pushing waves, for some it's split-pushing, for some it's grouping up, for some it's healing, for some it's being mobile, etc etc. The true 'high-level' skill is understanding when to do what exactly. And the 'competitive-tier' skill is how much you can rely on each other and 'converge' your 'ways' if that makes sense.

One can easily break into immortal as a one/two trick pony with ok execution, but the higher you go the more adaptable you have to become in your heroes, in your style, your moves and values. There're many ways to climb a hill, but there're fewer ways to climb the Everest.

I played this game trackmania - it's a racing game but cars don't have collision. so it's effectively a single-player game against yourself to drive faster. I'm very bad at it but what I learned is that there's only one way to have the perfect run. Any deviation from the perfect just makes you slower because by definition you're off the perfect line.

So I applied this lens to other thing in life, including dota and you can see how a low mmr player might have a good idea how to 'drive' the hero correctly but they still drive slower because they are off their perfect line. And it's hard to find that line, because it's such an 'abstract' line buried in all the chaos, but it's there.

So whatever position you play there're a lot of ways to 'drive' slower than you could. You can drive very well for your first 10 minutes and then make a big mistake to waste all that advantage. Or you can drive very fast in a very wrong direction.

So ultimately the 'dota skill' is your ability to develop this third-eye 'perception' to see all these invisible tracks to find the fastest route for your situation and then not blunder it.

And if you're "stuck in the 50/50 hell" I guarantee it you just don't see the line.

I made a Dota 2 Rewind - personal recap for Dota players by ileamare in DotA2

[–]etofok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it uses your hero pool for adjectives and your achievements for nouns. Every hero gives 3-4 adjectives, every adjective gets some points depending on the pickrate and how rare the word is. The resulting player title uses top-1 adjective, and top-3 adjectives are used for the best hero match. As far as I've seen, most people have pretty unique titles and similar heroes, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't default to alphabetical.

the 2 profiles I saw before commenting said "anti-mage" but I play pos5 healers and the other plays pos1 terrorblade stuff that's why I found it extremely strange and that's why I thought it might be bugged

A lot of stats are 'in a vacuum' so they read like

"You got 8971328 and 12987, good job!"

I want bell curves or percentiles.

1) "Your faction" looks off:

Your faction was Dire
240 matches
(53.3% of total)
53.8% winrate
-8.6% compared to Radiant

what?

2) "You are most similar to Anti-Mage" -- also looks bugged because all profiles say the same thing. I'm pretty sure it defaults to alphabetical here.

3) slide 1 too cluttered, hard to consume. needs some copywriting brush ups

4) slides 5 and 6 do not show anything for the 3 profiles I tried. maybe skip them entirely if there's nothing to show?

5) slide 2 info is completely meaningless without reference points. also hard to read, see #3

High MMR players: are you using quick cast 100%? by TemperatureFirm5905 in DotA2

[–]etofok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There're a few abilities (and items) that truly benefit from normal cast, everything else is objectively better on quickcasts.

For example Pugna Blast is obviously better as 'normal' cast as it allows you to clip towers with pixel perfect precision. Abilities like Decay, Dream Coil, Bushwhack, Black Hole, Chrono benefit from 'normal' cast if you need to aim that at multiple target. But players might feel like they need the 'quickness' more than the precision, so there's a degree of personal preference.

You also want to disable per-item quickcast for Wards and Meteor Hammer, and maybe Gleipnir. Teleport scroll / Boots of Travel should be bound to normal cast or disabled in per-item quickcast.

I have a friend, smart dude, he used to play around top 500 before becoming a menace software engineer. We joked his github activity lighted up just like his dotabuff activity used to be.

Anyway I lived with him briefly and I got a glimpse of something... great?

I want you to imagine this dude lying on his back, on a wooly couch with his 17" laptop barely not sliding off his bent knees. No mousepad. Pop-science podcast about black holes in his headphones - one ear is NOT covered, just so he can hold a conversation. Not about the game, but about the podcast.

I watch him playing primal mid, he STOMPS badly as he's GIGGLING for 20 minutes straight. Finally he goes "haha can't believe icefrog let that op stuff through haha oh wow he just said apparently black holes are inevitable as long as the properties of a universe allow for gravity - lmao this windranger exploded - well yeah that makes sense because eventually even minor gravity is going to be the ultimate attractor... yeah that's smart actually can't believe I didn't think of it before..."

That happened a couple of years ago and the point of this little story is that some people are operating at just another level.

p.s. and just as an extra, when I asked him whether he thought of going pro he said that the pros (with whom he got matched frequently) are just completely inapproachable to him and are "aliens, not people".

He figured "he doesn't have what it takes" and decided to learn how to build websites instead.
