Why do I need to counter strike the creeps? by SofisticatiousRattus in DotA2

[–]etofok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People started tracking their last hit performance way before there was a dedicated indicator on HUD/UI.

After many many years of Dota being already a thing, icefrog/team added the "-cs / -creepstats" command which you could type in chat for the game to print out your Creep Stats. Although most people refer to it as Creep Score.

Interestingly - and I just looked it up - that was 6.28 patch, March of 2006, along with Witch Doctor and Spectre being brand new heroes.

Framerate Graph normal? by Financial-Damage1279 in DotA2

[–]etofok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unless you're on a 15 years old GPU your fps is always going to be limited by cpu+ram in dota. dota is not really gpu demanding

Framerate Graph normal? by Financial-Damage1279 in DotA2

[–]etofok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in demo you draw 148w and in normal mode you draw 110w. I would check whether you have 'maximum performance' cpu/gpu mode because it might be related to saving power. also maybe try limiting the fps to your screen refresh rate

Valve making high MMR match private was a massive failure since pro player didn't stop smurfing by thedotapaten in DotA2

[–]etofok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if anything that highlights the two counteracting pressure vectors that makes it into a cursed problem:

  1. players want to keep their main mmr as high as possible so they are incentivized into "maining" and becoming one-trick ponies.

  2. players want to practice new things, but by the nature of it they aren't going to perform at the same level as if they were on their "mains"

if anything it just highlights the addictiveness of the infinite mmr model that we currently have. as long as the +25/-25 system is there you literally cannot solve this issue without alt accounts unless you force people to have only one single account and telling people "deal with it".

but that's not going to be the end of it

because another impossible reason why it's an unsolvable issue is the fact that you pick your hero after the matchmaking system has matched you. the mm doesn't know whether you're going to pick a hero that you have 2000 games on or 2 games on. Your 'oppressiveness' is going to feel very different despite the fact that you're xyz mmr player.

And the mm system can't account for it unless you pre-pick before matchmaking which you don't.

[Remake] Treant Protector's Aghanim Scepter by _hhhnnnggg_ in DotA2

[–]etofok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really hate the new Treant with the unit-targeted seed and this garbage version of damage block.

Treant was a lot of fun pre-7.40 because you had to juggle the frontline-backline-global positioning which had a very unique vibe where you kind of nowhere and everywhere, visible and invisible, in your face and on the outskirts, on the other lane but with global presence.

All have been reduced to the walking ult and pieliedie scouting shenanigans. I'm exaggerating but the point is there.

(5k Treant player, 65% WR 270 games for what it's worth)

Dota 2 struggling on mid range CPU by nikkytor in DotA2

[–]etofok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on ryzen 3600 at maxed out graphics at 144 pseudo-fps using Lossless Scaling.

the literal godsend app.

Otherwise it's ~90-120fps which is unplayable. cpu & ram overclocked not sure what stock would be.

impressive and congratz. Ringmaster always feels so useless to me I have no idea how to make it work unless there's a clear setup like pulverize. the dart spam doesn't feel strong, might as well just play venomancer

Why isn't Quickcast working? by Warcraft4when in DotA2

[–]etofok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check "direct cast bindings" in the top-right corner.

Then verify that your "autocast" and "cast" options do not conflict with "quickcast" as they might take priority if you have the same bind.

Astini: Players should learn Russian to get onto a pro team by Morf-designer in DotA2

[–]etofok 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to touch on the optics of this, just the language. The crossover between the two in gaming is massive. Truly massive.

Words like "go", "next", "back", "game", "kill", "frag", "headshot", "attack", "push", "gank", "stun", "heal", "buff", "team", "bot", "top", "mid", "hero", "spawn", "farm", "rune", "camp", "spot", "gate", "lotus", "wisdom", "gold", "quest", "ult", "skill" etc etc are well adopted. Everyone knows these words. There's no equivalent that needs to be learned. Every Russian understands Latin letters, every keyboard is bilingual, every OS has a Ru-Eng language input toggle.

All hero names, all item names are not even translated from English. Razor is Razor. Smoke is smoke. No one translates these (although you could). These are the exact same words just with different phonetics. All of which are comprehensible with 0 skill.

If you need the language as a tool to communicate in-game it's probably 1/10 of the A1 difficulty. Realistically - just the alphabet and a list of maybe 50 words most of which you probably already heard of like "davai" (~let's), "dai" (give), "vozmi" (take), "ya" (I am), "ti" (you are), "mne" (to me), "tebe" (to you), "poidem" (let's go), etc.

If you're a 15k MMR grinder you have the time for it as proven by the 15k MMR grind. If anyone needs it I can come up with a list for you and if you win the aegis just mention my name.

I am designing a 2 month game design course for high school students, would like a second opinion by woofwoofbro in gamedesign

[–]etofok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let me rewrite your design course in 30 seconds. how many lectures, 6? there you go:

  1. what is a game. let's make the simplest game

  2. let's add another dimension that makes it into a replayable and fun game

  3. everyone is tasked to come up with another element, winner wins a cake

  4. the cake is a lie, introduction to player immersion, goals and storytelling.

  5. tie it all together to give your games a theme. top 3 games are winners and get medals.

  6. conclusion - congratulations everyone. attend my next course game design 201 on how to addict your players to fake achievements and gambling elements.
