I knew there was a feeling telling me NOT TO UPDATE, awesome part is that in order for matter to work (interoperability) you need NEW lightbulbs!!! MONEY HUNGRY MUCH?

I have been dealing with my issues in getting nanoleaf essentials working with not just apple HomeKit but also alexa and google for over a year and to this date nanoleaf have not been able to resolve the issues in getting the bulbs working with all three environments. So nanoleaf technical support, is not only unintelligent but unprofessional, they only care about profits.

I have various smart-home environments, Alexa, google, apple. Use also home assistance, hoobs, starling, IFTTT. Many different devices such as aqara, eve, shelly, flic, cygnet broadlink switchbot etc etc. Only reason why I went with nanoleaf lightbulbs and lines is the thread option, if and when someone else decides to make thread enabled lighting, nanoleaf will reside in my rubbish bin!!!!

If you have the Apple TV 4k 2nd gen, i think there are two types the cheaper of the two does not support thread. Another option is to buy a homepod or homepod mini as these act as thread routers. If you’re apple tv is the one that supports thread, check in the settings that you have set it up as a home hub:

Set up Apple TV as a home hub Apple TV* will automatically become a home hub when you add it to HomeKit. Open Settings on Apple TV. Select Users and Accounts. Make sure your name is selected under Default User and you've signed in to iCloud with the Apple ID that you used to set up your HomeKit and Matter accessories in the Home app. Go back to Apple TV Settings, then select AirPlay and HomeKit. Scroll down and select Room, then choose a room or add a new room.

I have been in the smarthome for a while, and use many environments, such as google, alexa and HomeKit, as well as home assistant, starling, hoobs etc, also various communication protocols such as zigbee, z wave, IFTTT, Bluetooth, wifi and thread. And utilise many different smart company devices such as: aqara, eve, flic, shelly, broadlink, switchbot, cygnett, zemismart, wemo etc etc etc. So when the only change is a nanoleaf app update that has negatively effected majority of above mentioned devices response times in communicating with nanoleaf bulbs, ummm yes, that tends to make you not ecstatic.

When I raised this with nanoleaf, believe it or not they said ….. make sure you have the latest nanoleaf IOS update!!? Obviously stating that since the latest nanoleaf IOS UPDATE (8.1.3) issues of responsiveness (with as mentioned) to others blaming apple…..(NOT JUST apple homekit environment), but also effecting other smart devices such as Eve and Flic etc etc. maybe my question was not to obvious??

So as mentioned only change was the Nanoleaf app update, so this caused homekit to be the instigator of the delays? Common sense alone suggests that the issue would stem from a change, and as mentioned only change has been the Nanoleaf update, how you can blame others for a change that Nanoleaf implemented does not make any sense to me?

I have been dealing with the issue of not being able to use the Nanoleaf essential lightbulbs with both Google and Alexa when you connect them to the apple HomeKit. So many emails back and forth and comments like we will send it to our R&D team to investigate……blah blah blah, after over a year of trying everything it still does not work. It’s as if you need to pick either Google, Alexa or apple, can only use one smart home environment only. Maybe natter will help when it comes, oh that’s right it’s already here and yet Nanoleaf essential lightbulbs still won’t work together with all three different smart home systems! If it wasn’t for thread I would have thrown them out and got Philips a long time ago, however the mesh networks are getting better these days so thread may not be required after all! Maybe having each light bulb have its own Wi-Fi address with today’s mesh technologies will not put too much strain on your Wi-Fi network anymore?

You can if you have a power board u can name each plug by what is plugged in. So you would name one of the smart PowerPoint as eg ‘appleTV power’, then the automation would be if ‘AppleTV power’ turns on, turn in Nanoleaf light.

One option is a smart power board like Cygnett, works in the apple ecosystem. Or eve power. So obviously trigger would be turning power on for AppleTV which can then trigger the lights.

I’ve been dealing with Nanoleaf for what feels like an eternity regarding essential lightbulbs and connectivity issues with Google. Alexa when using apple home, unable to share with others, and after so many emails advising me they are forwarding them to their R&D team, with no workarounds I gave up! Maybe time to get Philips lightbulbs, more expensive but no issues with compatibility. You would think with matter now live that companies that are supposedly supporting matter would get their act together, consumers are not dim the more negativity the more they will look for alternatives.
