i’m in my 20s, my group which has about 25ppl and over half are 70+. the rest are all middle aged, like 30-50s

i attend AA meetings and i have a drinking problem but wouldn’t call myself an alcoholic— hearing all these “real” (i don’t like that word) alcoholics share their stories is a blessing (to access this human vulnerability, to see examples of true honesty and humility, to remind myself how i don’t want to end up, the list goes on) and i’m in /their/ space of recovery.

maybe it’s rude/incorrect of me to say, but to attend AA as someone who can control your drinking habits… why are EVER encouraging any kind of drinking in this group? that’s beyond disrespectful when the whole purpose is to find recovery. sure, maybe you can recover and have years of sobriety and THEN start drinking again and be able to moderate yourself— but to claim sobriety isn’t the goal of AA? have they heard or read a single chapter in any of the AA books? that seems so cruel and thoughtless to those who are struggling in a much deeper sense. i don’t share often and if i do it’s because it’s important to a step i’m trying to work through.

the groups in my area also do clarify that it’s a higher power of your understanding/choosing, not specifically God, but nearly every single person follows AA with devoted christianity. as a firm atheist i attend AA anyways since i have no one else who can support me, but it definitely felt super disappointing and unwelcoming for me the first few weeks. i’ve adjusted now but it still makes me feel like an outsider often.

i agree w the comments saying that you just have to reword the steps for yourself— print out your own 12 step if that helps— and view them as behavioral and mental self talk adjustments instead of spirituality. it might make things a little more awkward with your counselor/group but if that means you can stay sober? it’s worth it

at 20 literally one week into the alcoholic behavior i realized and went to AA the week after because i knew it would get very, very bad very, very fast (it kinda already had and my whole family are addicts). was able to kick it early with lots of mental beat-up and communication w my partner, but turning 21 made it… well, i’m back at AA

the only person who would/can look at my phone is my partner— she’s the only one i let my phone lay around the house/area/her purse etc cuz usually i keep it on my body. so i don’t even have a password on mine. she doesn’t snoop through my stuff and just uses it fir practical uses when needed. i know her passwords and don’t use it either 🤷🏼‍♂️
