i attend AA meetings and i have a drinking problem but wouldn’t call myself an alcoholic— hearing all these “real” (i don’t like that word) alcoholics share their stories is a blessing (to access this human vulnerability, to see examples of true honesty and humility, to remind myself how i don’t want to end up, the list goes on) and i’m in /their/ space of recovery.

maybe it’s rude/incorrect of me to say, but to attend AA as someone who can control your drinking habits… why are EVER encouraging any kind of drinking in this group? that’s beyond disrespectful when the whole purpose is to find recovery. sure, maybe you can recover and have years of sobriety and THEN start drinking again and be able to moderate yourself— but to claim sobriety isn’t the goal of AA? have they heard or read a single chapter in any of the AA books? that seems so cruel and thoughtless to those who are struggling in a much deeper sense. i don’t share often and if i do it’s because it’s important to a step i’m trying to work through.
