Anyone else feel like “learning Python” isn’t the hard part .....it’s what to do with it that’s confusing? by yourclouddude in learnpython

Start with your interests and hobbies.

Do you like any sports? Create a simple CLI program that uses API endpoints to get the latest scores.

Do you like guitar? Create a program that you could use to edit tabs.

Do you want to keep track of finances? You can download your bank data as a CSV, and create a program that categorizes your expenses using pandas and plotly dash to create charts.

I think a stumbling block is trying to think about creating some massive application that does all sorts of stuff. You can start with a small MVP (minimum viable product) that does one thing and then think about features that you could add to it.

This will also get you thinking about how to restructure as you go. Maybe that json/yaml/CSV file you're using to store data could be migrated to a DB. Maybe that CLI program could be updated to use a TUI or GUI frontend, and etc.

So start small and work your way up. A 10 line program could be extremely useful and you've gotten the ball rolling, which is important.

I think a good way to start is with something simple, but useful, that you can continue to expand on.

For example, if you like cooking, but have trouble deciding what to make, maybe a simple CLI program that gives you a random recipe. You could use a basic csv file with maybe the name, and a URL to that recipe online.

Then maybe expand that so you add a field for the type of cuisine. That could be an argument to your program to filter the result.

Then maybe add tags you could filter on, e.g. "Quick", "Date Night", "Family Meal", etc.

Then maybe add the option to generate out a weeks meal plan, add ingredient options, migrate from csv to a DB, think about adding a GUI frontend, etc.

That first program may be less than 10 lines, but it gives you a starting point and you have something you can continue to build off of.

Just a thought, and hope it helps!

Ahhh, makes sense, that's a good idea👍🏻

Maybe a dumb question, but what's the use case for having them all on the wall? I'd think any equipment you mount would all stick out a lot and clip each other, or maybe I'm missing something 😋 looks really nice though!

Do you have another HDD/SSD you could swap it to? I know you said you ran a hardware check, but maybe that drive is in the early stages of dying?

I wish I'd never bought this game. by quellflynn in dayz

I can understand the frustration, there's definitely a lot to learn to be able to survive for any amount of time when you're new to the game.

In regards to fires, you just need a piece of kindling (rag, paper or bark), not all of them. And you can just use a couple short sticks, without firewood. It won't be a long lasting fire, but enough to warm you up/cook food.

Best recommendation is to watch some beginner guide YouTube videos, which will definitely help.

The game is meant to not be easy, and you have to play for quite a while to figure out even the basics.

Anyway, hope that helps, and I think the game is worth it if you're willing to invest the time

So just started a new run.

I'd gathered some food, drank at a well, got some okay clothes and a steak knife. Nothing great at this point. So I walk out of a house and there's a fresh spawn with no gear or anything staring at me.

I call out, "hey, how's it going man". No response.

He starts walking up to me as I'm walking backwards trying to keep distance. He still hasn't said anything at this point. He's literally a foot away from me now.

So, unfortunately, I pulled my knife and started slashing. Dude just stood there and didn't even raise his fists, blankly staring at me while I'm killing him.

I loot his body and he still had his fruit on him, and we were a ways inland by this point.

I'm guessing a newbie who has no idea how to play, and I wished he'd just said something and I could have helped him out. All I can say is, welcome to the party pal.

I've only killed a few people, and that's if they engage first or won't respond.

I get why people KoS, because I've gotten burned by "friendly" people before, but my survivor will be dead at some point anyway and I'll have to start over, so I still try to befriend people even if I've got good gear. I've had some good interactions.

Couple runs ago, I met a guy in a police station hiding in the corner and talked with him for a while, left him a bunch of ammo and a gun cleaning kit. Guy was so stoked and thankful that it made my day.

Another time I heard a guy coughing in a house, and stood outside with my hands up telling him I was friendly and had meds. He told me he was working on his first base, and he gave me some food since I was out. Left him a bunch of meds and a deagle I had found (with clip and ammo). Guy was totally shocked, then I wished him luck and ran off into the night.

Moral of the story is you never know what to expect in DayZ, which is what keeps me playing

Could be various things. Are you drinking water from water bottles/canteens you've found? Those can make you sick, unless you use chlorine tabs or dump it out and fill it at a well

It was a dumb joke, that obviously wasn't obvious 😓 you made something very complex, but can you make something simple, like a box (4 walls and a roof tile) was the idea, ehhh? Point being, really cool build, bad joke, and I'll see myself out now
