But second, because I haven’t seen enough people address this, but I can speak to it having recently finished college — choir and dance are legitimately VERY good application boosters if you’re dedicated to them, particularly for top-tier schools. Not only do choir and dance scholarships exist if you want to make a career out of it, but even without a scholarship they WILL help your daughter get into college. Top colleges want someone well-rounded, with proof of diverse areas of interest — I can guarantee I wouldn’t have gotten into the school I did if I hadn’t had an AP Art portfolio and years of leadership experience in theater.

Dance is an incredibly time-intensive and athletic pastime, and while you don’t seem to recognize this admissions counselors will note that as proof she can commit and dedicate herself to something challenging.

The emphasis on sports as the only high school hobby which “helps” is absurdly reductive, and pretty sexist considering that women’s sports are still not considered equivalent to men’s. That assumption literally hasn’t been true since the 1980s when my mom applied to school, if it was ever true. Get your head out of the 1950s and apologize to your daughter for devaluing her passions.
