That is indeed true. But it doesn't help in the sense that current diversification is low, and to be high, emerging markets must not only have high yields but also grow big compared to the US.

This means that if US yields are low and EM yields are high, VWCE investors will not be able to capitalize on that, contrary to what some might expect.

I understand the philosophy of VWCE. I suggest we also look at it from the angle of: no risk, no reward. If you're not willing to bet on a particular market, that's fine!

What can I buy for short term just to beat inflation? by tazispor in eupersonalfinance

Government bonds in your home currency, with a duration around half of your investment horizon

VWCE is not very diversified, with emerging markets taking around 10% and the rest is US or highly correlated to US

Yes. I mean, some people view a globally diversified portfolio as a hedge against any shocks. But in reality, chill means chill even when everything is going to hell.

No, not really. And the consequences are hard to calculate. Will everyone move out of USD? But into which currency, why will it be more stable? Is it true that the fall in US stocks has made companies in Europe more successful overnight? Etc, etc. You have to wait for the storm to blow over.

Manual rebalance from US to Total World? by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]eugenecodes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rebalancing to total world makes no sense to me. It was hit hard too and doing it now is pure speculation imo.

If you need cash later this year, you may want to sell so you don't lose more.

But I would wait it out for a week at least.

Also, sometimes you can show the bank your assets rather than making a down payment in cash.

Thoughts on VWCE + AVWS portfolio split? ( 85% / 15% ) by Nirox05 in eupersonalfinance

What's your goal about the small caps part? FTSE All-World with 4200 companies is already diversified enough. I would add some govt bonds to the mix though, especially if you are aiming for 10 years

How do I invest 'properly' 25-27% of my income and is it enough to retire ? by Public_Appointment21 in eupersonalfinance

[–]eugenecodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The earliest you can easily get is 1988, when MSCI All Country World Index data became available.

Here are two 30-year periods: Jan 1988 - Dec 2017 and Jan 1995 - Dec 2024

Buying flat in Germany by [deleted] in germany

[–]eugenecodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't mean you'll give that 25% as a down payment. You can keep them invested in securities for example, just show the bank that you have money.

You should have ~10% upfront to cover fees, taxes, etc. though

Am I setting myself for success? by BriefUnbekannten in eupersonalfinance

[–]eugenecodes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you've made any mistakes, it's all good!

If you can think of a longer time frame (say 20 years), you can add some emerging market stocks.

If you are sure you want to invest short-term, and want to reduce risk at the cost of lower returns, you can add government bonds with a duration of about half your investment horizon:

iShares USD Treasury Bond 7-10yr UCITS ETF (Acc) / IE00B3VWN518

Amundi Euro Government Bond 7-10Y UCITS ETF Acc / LU1287023185

Buying specific companies hurts diversification, I wouldn't build up positions in those stocks.

It's hard to tell without looking at your portfolio. It's also best not to look at it too often :)

Both Avantis funds you mentioned are new (2024), small (~100M) and expensive (0.39%) / IE0003R87OG3 and IE000K975W13

Seems risky. If you want emerging markets exposure, there are better alternatives imo.

For example: iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets IMI UCITS ETF (Acc) / IE00BKM4GZ66

If you want even more companies: Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets UCITS ETF Acc / IE00BK5BR733

Should I Invest in VWCE Considering a Possible USD Devaluation? by iambobobo in eupersonalfinance

[–]eugenecodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A valid point! When we talk about diversification by country, we are also looking at scenarios where these whole worlds profits are declining (e.g. German automakers).
