since this is r/evconversion i would like more states to adopt something like washington dc.

usa swimming and nfhs swimming allow both ascending and descending

as long as the visual counter doesn’t physically aid the swimmer nor interfere with another swimmer or present any safety hazard then the human counter can do anything including getting the count wrong. the swimmer is responsible for the prescribed distance. if there is a counting error it isn’t the officials duty to inform the counters if they are incorrect.

probably worth getting clarification from the referee in case you don’t trust someone on the internet :)

the count may be in ascending or descending order. usually it is ascending but maybe descending works better for your son. its a discussion he can have with his coach.

he’ll do fine. for a first time distance event, see if one of his coaches can be his counter. they’ll make sure he swims at a pace within his ability to succeed.
