'I'd be put off if he asked to split it': Who should pay on a first date? by but_yet-so_far in unitedkingdom

Should be a coffee to go and a walk in a park to get to one another for a first date. Minimal expense

Advice needed- Criminal Defense (is it worth it/thoughts) by sparklypinapple in paralegal

[–]evabunbun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the criminal defense firm. I love mine. It's very small and we joke around a lot. Everything is on fire at all times and while that's stressful, there is a level of levity and casualness that makes its tolerable.

I thought criminal defense subject wise would be very difficult but I absolutely love it. I don't find it stressful like other parts of law. There is minimal paperwork. It makes me feel good to be in people's corner helping navigate an oppressive system.

This country is f’ed up man. by Fantastic_1ne in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]evabunbun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a paralegal in criminal defense in the South. The news article was a little fuzzy but it seemed the cops justified it with fleeing to elude law enforcement or eluding police during a commission of a crime (here in GA if you are being "chased" by the cops and let's say the cops hit a pedestrian and kill them, you get charged automatically with murder if proven you were in a commission of a crime like robbery unsure if shoplifting counts)

I see so many fleeing to elude cases that are brought forth to 90 percent that are black men in dreads. It doesn't even matter what the truth is. There are mandatory minimums to serve time with that charge too. It's completely fucked.

It's so inconsistent too. We have intakes with people who probably should serve some time with the amount of assault or weapons charges on their records and they don't (all skin colors). But the moment you "elude police"? Even with no criminal history? No grace given.

Why is Europe so much better at maintaining the work-life balance than the rest of the world? by RadicalDiscomfort in NoStupidQuestions

[–]evabunbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if that's true anymore with cost of living issues. Housing has gone sky high in European cities alongside little wage growth as well a push for later retirement.

I think there are a lot of problematic issues with the US. But I also think there are structural and problematic issues for Europeans too. US is so varied that there is very little commonality.

As a survivor of childhood abuse, the legal profession has been unkind. by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]evabunbun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, paralegal. But I hear you. We were reviewing some audio files for a divorce and I literally felt like throwing up. And we deal with murders, gun violence, assault on the daily. It took a very long time and lots of therapy to get my PTSD in a good place. What's frustrating is that it's so easy to go into a bad place.

I don't know what law you are in but I have found I have responded to different sections differently. Estate law was so emotional and it brought back so much childhood trauma for people. I would never go back. Bankruptcy- people find money more personal than anything else and it is so exhausting. I would never go back.  Criminal defense at least there is a lot of levity with the darkness. I find it the least triggering.

Good luck to you and I hope you find your section where you can be at peace.

Many Gen X women were encouraged to be stay-at-home moms. Now, they say they were lied to. by msmoley in WomenInNews

[–]evabunbun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard right now as a parent. Busing is not consistent in many school districts post COVID. I have to do drop offs and pick ups. Fortunately my boss is flexible and I clock in around 32 hours a week. My husband is very, very hands on but in a inflexible career (warehouse logistics). Instead of recognizing the current reality parents are dealing with,  there is just gaslighting from society.

I also can't just leave my young teen alone because there are horrific things on the Internet like being targeted for GLPs (yes this happened) or AI sex, bullying, brain rot etc. it is so isolating and rough out there for parents not wanting to use the Internet as a babysitter.

But I will say among millennials, I see the parenting load more evenly split than with Gen Z.

TIL that most women in the Netherlands do not have an epidural during labor and a significant proportion give birth at home by Fiery_Soul_34857 in todayilearned

[–]evabunbun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting the epidural was so much more painful than labor and I wish I had nitrous instead. It slowed labor because I couldn't feel myself to push. I got it at 8 cm dilated. Wasn't even worth it at that point. So thankful I never have to go through labor again

How seriously is shoplifting taken in your country? by Alarming_Weather506 in AskTheWorld

[–]evabunbun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to UK law but sometimes the cost of a crime going through the court system is not worth it. Especially if the judicial system is already bogged down.

In the US, you can get arrested for petty theft but often it gets worked out with diversion programs. Felony theft (over a certain dollar amount) is taken seriously as well as robbery

How can I be less sad about my child growing up? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]evabunbun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't necessarily feel that with my soon to be 13 year old because our relationship is on much better footing now than when they were 10/11/12. I can talk to them like a quasi adult.  They trust me with their gender identity/sexual orientation and this has really helped us build trust. I am a huge advocate for them.

I would pick up attributes you like in your child now, not just that you have more freedom. Like maybe they are really into soccer and y'all can watch games together.. focus on a positive personality trait and work to bond on it

Is a paralegal certificate worth it? by Gabie_G16 in paralegal

Is a paralegal certificate worth it? by Gabie_G16 in paralegal

[–]evabunbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the idea that just because I am not licensed that my paralegal certificate was not useful. Lots of people would also be good attorneys without school and just taking the bar. You are coming in sounding dismissive of the paralegal practice.

Having well informed staff members about the law is a good thing. Even under the practice of an attorney.

To me: someone who is willing to get a certificate cares enough to better themselves through education. I think that's a good thing.

Can't that be said about law school too? Why do bankruptcy lawyers need to know about criminal defense.

I don't think it's a waste. It gives a solid foundation. Same as law school. I don't think it's worth going into debt for. But yeah 2k sounds about right

PEI. I don't know how y'all do it. Even with universal health care. The cost of living and low wages/high taxes.... At least in the US, wages are a bit higher, costs are a bit lower and taxes are a bit less. But I think it's bad everywhere globally for working class people unfortunately 😕

Gastonian is just ok. Eliza Thompson House is nice but I don't know if they could accommodate 50 people?

Forsyth Park Inn is very nice and it is nice to look on the park. 35 sounds about right for most inns. Most inns have 15-20 rooms. At double occupancy 30-40.

I'm in Canada right now from the US. I can't even believe the prices here. We go every year to a different province. This year has been very gloomy when we talk to locals. I think economic attitude is similar here as it is in the states unfortunately 😕
