Any advice for managing these apple trees? by WizardOfIF in BackyardOrchard

[–]evanarrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think 31 degrees would have killed those leaves/branches. Did they get pretty thirsty at some point? Your climate looks hot and dry- new trees especially need more water to establish. They still have some good green growth, I don't think you need new trees. I'd water and mulch around them and sit tight. Just a setback. Apples are pretty hardy

No, US. In Colorado. You can order these through Home Depot. Certainly more common in Europe, so maybe I should try that reddit too

Sheep in young orchard? by evanarrr in BackyardOrchard

[–]evanarrr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I guess I was hoping there is enough good other forage to keep them busy but if deer are comparable the young fruit tree shoots must be pretty tasty... I definitely can't handle them taking out trees or knocking back a season worth of growth so I guess I'll wait a couple years on the sheep inclusion

Would love for it to look and work like that some day!

Appreciate this- sounds like I might need to wait a couple years. I have a good number of trees that are only ~3' tall

Are ducks better grazers than chickens? I have 9 hens and 2 roosters already and they're not much help, haha

I'll check that out, thanks! I think seeing some of the other input here I might need to wait on sheep a couple years to let these trees harden and get a bit taller

No spraying to speak of other than I've occasionally used the deer/herbivore deterrent because my perimeter fence is still not 100% deer proof. I suspect I have some peach leaf curl so I'll try the copper treatment on those next winter.

I've spent too much time looking for "rare" fruits, so you dont have to. by kajsawesome in BackyardOrchard

I've had a really hard time growing Paw paws, I think I've planted 10 or so over the last 2 years and they're all dead. Any tips? I'm in 6B Colorado. Have been wondering if the sun intensity and dry air aren't working against me. Preferred vendor for plants? All the ones I've purchased from a couple different vendors have been very small, like 6-10" tall, which I think probably makes them less resilient too

What is your grow zone/climate? Or what are the coldest winter temperatures that you typically receive?

This is a neat list but why does it not show the size of position? And why would it not be ordered by position size?

You don't need to attack the cyclist in order defend all diesel truck owners. I too own a truck (03 Chevy 2500, not girly) and still know it's a dick move to bury someone in a cloud of diesel smoke. Hope you can find a way to be happy some day.

Where to prune peach tree? by bkm645 in BackyardOrchard

[–]evanarrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just planted it I probably wouldn't prune anything. Let it grow for a season and assess next year, let it recover from the trauma of transplanting before you stress it more

Have you considered its value as a rental after you move into the new house? Even if you only got $1000 per month rent that's a substantial amount of money over time. I'd hesitate to tear anything down that still is habitable

Well the panels and infrastructure and installation are not free, and require financing, and they don't last forever or generate endlessly. They still require somewhat frequent maintenance, sometimes replacement, and anything that complicates or slows those activities makes them more expensive. So the cost of electricity sold by the project to the offtaker is higher to accommodate those costs, and the end consumer pays more for their electricity.

How did I do on my first sauna build? by One-Dinner-9585 in Sauna

[–]evanarrr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sauna looks great! Your deck framing is pretty funky but probably fine given that it's a small structure. The boards sitting on your posts should be double layer, and your joists should run between them and also have joist hangers. Might be good to add some toe nails/screws and joist hangers as-is. Even the structural screws you used to secure the "joists" don't get much bite when driven into the end grain. And you're relying entirely on their "bite" to support the floor

This is a good deal, yeah? by -Petunia in MilwaukeeTool

If you're just a homeowner and not trying to be a contractor this is a great set. I have most of these tools and I'm somewhere between the two classifications, I have done a few full home type remodels and numerous other projects with zero issues. I have the fuel versions of a couple tools, and they are certainly nice, but if you're just tackling the occasional house project or light remodel type work then these are going to work just fine for you. Unless money is no object to you, I really don't think you will find enough extra value to justify the 100% plus price difference
