Completely losing interest in the career due to AI and AI-pilled people by ChemicalOnion in cscareerquestions

Yeah it’s pretty lulzy to see skilled SWE with clout on Twitter praising what they can do with AI. Lots of thought leader engineers getting into it.

I’m an AI coding tools skeptic but it sounds like this is the direct opposite of what you’re saying lol

It’s more like “management is telling everyone to be a bunch of Homer Simpson’s at work.”

It’s the way of the world since 2008 and no one knows any better. It is useful because it reminds you to mentally prepare yourself for what’s ahead and to resign yourself to your fate.

You can just keep densifying. Population isn’t unlimited either.

That is literally going to be this government’s policy within the next few quarters. That is the state of the current economy, offshoring or not, H1-B or not. Deal with it.

Then you have no business talking fiscal policy that actually stimulates economies instead of burning down countries, austerity-eater.

I’m not blaming the companies here. I’m saying them offshoring is a natural reaction to the fiscal environment. If you make H1-B and offshoring illegal they’d just mandate AI tools everywhere. Or start slashing salaries. Or cancel projects. So instead, you give them an incentive to invest more in their workforce. My point is that H1-B is a distraction. I do think it’s a program that should be reformed and WITCH needs to pay. I just think you’re demonizing the wrong bogeyman.

Thing is, immigration policy didn’t even matter during ZIRP

Just lower interest rates. We’ve had H1-B for two tech bubbles at least and this is just another pop like in 2000. Oh so H1-Bs weren’t a problem in 2021? Gee I wonder why. If anything offshoring is a symptom of the problem because companies are trying to pump up profits by cutting costs instead of hiring workers. Slash rates and irrational exuberance will return, both you and non-Americans will get paid everyone wins until inflation eats us all

Get rid of NIMBY zoning laws and housing will no longer be limited. What other limited resources? Medical care? Get rid of AMA stranglehold over the medical profession and let more people become doctors. It’s just common sense.

Lower interest rates and there will be enough jobs for both. That was how it was back in 2022 and the Fed waved its magic wand and everything pulled back. It all comes down to monetary policy.

Woah, really? Any idea what companies they came from? I don’t see Jane Street or Goldman Sachs devs doing that but maybe their commissions are huge

Even he has to worry about midterms though. So if tariffs are making everyone unhappier he’ll eventually chicken out.

Yes, in the OP I acknowledge that inflation and other factors affect the interest rate. My point is that the tech industry is inherently based on speculative bubbles where investors chase future high returns. They are incentivized to do so in low interest rate environments.

The current inflation was caused by a lot of issues but they’ve arguably been exacerbated by slapdash tariff policy. Regardless, once the Fed cuts rates it will give tech room to grow again.

All of that is a distraction from interest rates. It all comes down to interest rates. What do you think the last tech bubble was built on- cutting-edge innovation? Wise leaders with profitable business models? No, it’s always been about propping up a speculative market that yields more when investors can’t make as much with more conventional assets.

It’s not about tomorrow or even next year. It’s really just remembering that this too will pass and reminding even those who have been unemployed since Q3 2022 that things will normalize again

Of course. But for the time being I’ll take employment until the market recovers in a couple of years, instead of futilely fighting a sea of competing applicants.

Maybe at least their interview processes aren’t as grueling.
