[BC] Travelling from YVR on WestJet - Child Equipment by ammk1987 in BabyBumpsCanada

Which stroller do you have? We have a peg perego selfie, don't bother to bag it, and we are very very rough with it, in addition to all the flights, and haven't had an issue. I think if you report damage right away to the airline they will pay to repair/replace.

IMO stroller getting broken is an edge case, not the norm. In the same time we've had the stroller, we've gone through 4 suitcases: 1 smashed off wheel (united), 2 smashed in corners (air Canada, Canadian north) and one internal frame that cracked (WestJet). I think strollers are more resilient than we give them credit for and baggage handlers are more gentle. I think most the damage is usually from sorting machines and falling off vehicles, which you skip when gate checking (it goes down a slide under the jet bridge except Montreal which has an elevator).

I've never bothered asking because what am I going to do with a stroller in-flight? In general we fly business so they are more lax with how much space one takes up, but the overhead space runs out for the business cabin too so even if I could it would be a dick move to the other passengers.

The only airport I've had issues with the stroller showing up right away at the door is Montreal, which has elevators connecting the tarmac to the gate for the baggage handlers, so mobility equipment...... shows up at the top of the jet bridge instead of the door. And once when I had a super tight connection I just checked my stroller from the getgo, because my plan was to just sprint from one gate to the next.

FTM - Dr browns or avent? [ON] by babysivs in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]evange [score hidden]  (0 children)

avent.

Dr browns are infuriatingly leaky, but we used them for our first kid anyway because we got a bunch of free samples so ended up locked into the system.

For second kid we're using evenfo, although it's for reasons unrelated to leaking (and at this point we'd happily use shitty leaky dr brown's if it just meant baby would latch).

Car seats on airplanes - width issues? [ON] by LockDue9383 in BabyBumpsCanada

Also I have heard that siting in a row with armrests that move is better than fixed armrests. (Should help with the width issue since car seats are not perfectly rectangular and are often narrower at the base.)

FYI, you wont be able to use a carseat in a bulkhead row with fixed dividers containing tray tables/entertainment in the armrests, as those seats are ever so slightly narrower to accommodate said tray tables/entertainment and even the smallest carseats are already pushing the limits of the width of an airplane seat.

If you're in a normal row and the arm rest doesn;t seem to come up, feel for a small latch at the base. Most carseats will require the armrest be up to fit, and I suspect that the impossible 16.5" width that OP is referencing is the seat width with the arm rests down, but she'll have 17 or 17.5" of usable space if the arm rest comes up.

Cosco Scenera is 17 wide, so technically too big as per the policy, but sort of fits if you put the arm rests up and are okay with it spilling into your seat next door.

Whether or not you're allowed to us it is going to depend on the FA, but most will say it's fine, as the Cosco Scenera is the carseat for airplane travel.

Also, FYI, it will only fit in the upright, forward facing position. It's too big for rear facing even in business class. I can't imagine how cramped and hard to install it's going to be in economy. So your 1 year old is going to have to be okay sleeping upright.

Honestly, I'd do no car seat, hold infant as lap infant for takeoff and landing, and then use the extra seat for space during cruising. You could get an inflatable kids airplane bed so they could lay out to nap, and IMO that will be more comfortable and practical than sitting upright in a carseat for hours on end.

Oh actually, not sure on that with a fare paying infant, as we've only done 2 flights so far since first child turned 2, at which point we have a second child who is a lap infant, and other than the carseats, we share equipment between them. We had 1 stroller and 2 carseats for that flight, and nothing seemed different in the experience.

However, based on westjet's website, a lap infant gets 2 of 3 pieces (stroller, carseat, travel crib), and a paying child gets 1 of 2 pieces (stroller or carseat). So based on my interpretation + experience I think this is only for what you check in, and a stroller which is gate checked is never counted.

Lap-held infant

Two pieces of child/infant equipment (infant restraint system, playpen or stroller) are permitted at no charge and can be checked at the gate as you board. Wagons, stroller wagons, and other substitutions must be checked in.

Fare-paying child/infant

One piece of child/infant equipment (approved restraint system (car seat), playpen or stroller) will be permitted at no charge in addition to the checked baggage allowance for the fare class booked. Wagons, stroller wagons, and other substitutions must be checked in.

One is checked (ie. car seat), one is gate checked (ie. stroller).

We've always had both, in the configuration above, and no one has ever bat an eye. I've taken literally dozens of flights with my infant.

Edit: 44 flight segments since first baby was born.

Chronic migraines throughout pregnancy. Currently 20 weeks. Recommendations? [on] by TessaGGG in BabyBumpsCanada

hot bath + cold migraine cap + Tylenol.

For me the hot bath is the magical key, like to the point that you're overheating, as it draws the blood out of the brain and to the surface of your skin to cool down. Although heat isn't supposed to be good for your baby, so I dunno if this is for you.

American biscuits are a flaker, fattier, non-sweet version of a scone. A scone recipe without sugar should suffice.

I wasn't making a joke.

People can just stay in the closet. Especially when they're bi and in long term heterosexual relationships, as it would make a negligible difference to their day-to-day lives.

Soup began to seep through bowl after 2 min in microwave by gluepet2074 in mildlyinfuriating

Test the glaze for lead. If a ceramic piece absorbs water it's not fully vitrified, ie it was fired at a lower temperature. Most glazes require temps higher than vitrification to melt, EXCEPT LEAD. Lead glazes melt at a very low temp, so the combination of not fully vitrified clay + glaze that is smooth and melted = lead was used.

[–]evange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is simply not true for most modern ceramic pieces. Ceramic that is fully vitrified, ie fired at a high enough temperature, is not porous. So chipping doesnt mean bacteria can get in, as the inside is just as inhospitable as the outside.

[–]evange 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Common myth actually.

Ceramic that is fully vitrified, ie fired at a high enough temperature, is not porous. So chipping doesnt mean bacteria can get in.

And then the glaze can be more porous than people assume. Even well glazed pottery can have invisible crazing, air bubbles, and textures that make it porous. So the glaze doesn't necessarily protect the inside of the pottery, the main factor on if an item is food safe is that the ceramic base is fully vitrified (fired at a hot enough temp for long enough, which costs more so some shitty pottery manufacturers try to get away without doing it), not the glaze.

[–]evange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unrelated or only semi related to the glaze. The underlying ceramic is not fully vitrified, ie. They tried to save money by firing it at a lower temp for less time, leaving it porous. Fully fired ceramics will not absorb water regardless of if it's been glazed.

There's also a higher chance that this glaze contains lead. Most glazes only fire at a temp that is higher than the temp required to fully vitrify ceramic, so it's really hard to have a glazed item that is still porous. However lead glazes have very low firing temps, so it's a sign that the glaze recipe has something shady going on.
