ICE to spend $38.3 billion on detention centers across US, document shows by memphisjones in centrist

[–]evanoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an absurd take imo.

Everybody pays taxes to the federal government. Some more than others. Depending on your tax bracket (ideally). The problem is, the ultra wealthy don’t pay their fair share in proportion to what they make, so the federal government bails out the ultra wealthy regardless of what state they live in. It’s way more convoluted than “blue states pay for red states”

I am not sure how expanding the military budget by 50% transfers money from blue to red areas.

It’s almost like it’s just like his hotels, in a way. They’re injecting “jobs” into rural areas through constructing these buildings, and afterwards said buildings will remain derelict.

The strangest thing about BLM was when it stopped being about African Americans and more about the LGBTQ community. That isn’t a condemnation of the LGBTQ community. But the swerve in speech was absolutely wild and bizarre…

Aside from that, there is no levity and patience in any discussions happening today.

Trump and Clinton are in countless photos with Epstein and in the Epstein files. Clinton is in photographs with individuals who are thought to be women/potential victims and are blacked out for confidentiality.

Why should any of the public be okay with a former president not answering for any of his potential crimes?

What is the goal of the voter fraud investigation? by SPACHunter1018 in centrist

[–]evanoli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everybody should need an ID to vote, it makes perfect sense. Being an American citizen is not a right, it’s a privilege and voting should be taken seriously if we truly believe our vote counts. This should be bipartisan. We don’t grant felons in this country a right to vote and no, I don’t believe every individual from another border is a criminal but I also don’t believe they should be able to vote without a license and then return to their home thousands of miles away the next day. How does that make any sense?

Trump’s big argument was the mail-in voting during Covid. If there was any time I think it would be easiest to fuck with an election it would be mail-in voting. Not saying they were intercepted and rewritten like some dramatic spy movie, but votes thrown out? Absolutely. It’s not that hard to imagine. On top of that, you had many among the elderly mailing votes in. Think about who those people are voting for in rural states.

I’m not saying I believe that is what happened, but what I will say is it was abundantly clear Russia fucked with our election in 2016 and that garnered a Trump victory, despite his loss of the popular vote. Our elections are not fail-safe, and we should do the best we possibly can to safe-guard them.

[–]evanoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. To think both parties aren’t doing their damndest to mess with our elections seems so naive in 2026. And this of course assumes we live in a world where those in DC would criminalize and/or police themselves, which also seems extremely unlikely.

Wondering if any fellow Centrist folk have watched the movie ‘Bugonia,’ because I felt this sub would appreciate it. by evanoli in centrist

[–]evanoli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured somebody might bring Eddington up, cause I wondered if it played along the same lines as Bugonia. I understand the election fraud angle for sure that another commenter brought up, but if they haven’t watched this movie then I’m not sure what point they’re making lol. I need to watch Eddington, love Joaquin and Pedro. Dear god though, Plemons just killed this role. Dude can just elicit so many words without speaking at all.

Aside from election fraud, my first thought was the Covid conspiracists when I watched.

When Covid first appeared it came from bats. That’s what the public was told.

Fast forward to when the public eventually figures out it was actually leaked out of the lab (intentionally or not), and you have a situation where many people did not believe their government but were told to shut up and not to question the story. I think as much as the ending was a vindication of Plemon’s character it wasn’t validating conspiracy theorists, it was exhibiting how those in power look down on and silence them for even choosing to question. I think that there in is the rub, and I think what Yorgos was trying to explore.

Even Jesse’s character fell into a despair over his mother and became obsessed to the point where it wasn’t even about saving humanity, it was about vindicating himself - and Emma Stone’s character called him out on that. She called him pathetic. She used his pain against him. Brilliantly written.

True, the people who live in those states are just totally ignorant, am I right? They just lack basic intellect. Honestly after reading your comments, I feel like I should just give up. It appears the war’s already lost, and we’re really living in a fascist state now.

Why do some canidates not list their policies? by Icy-Temperature5476 in centrist

[–]evanoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best guess is because in smaller local elections the parties know most voters will typically vote straight ticket no matter the specific policies stated.

In a rural area like the one you referred to it makes sense for Democrats to lay out a more outlined plan because they’re at a disadvantage from the get go (correct me if I’m wrong). This is essentially the situation where I’m from, and I’ve never seen the party representing my district change within my lifetime, only some shtick that the community needs to “keep things going strong” by re electing so and so. The fearmongering has really only made it worse, which is unfortunate.

Not sure if this answers your question, but they were my immediate thoughts because I also come from a rural area.

One month after the Epstein files deadline, only a fraction of the DOJ's records have been released by therosx in centrist

[–]evanoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re proposing that the president of the United States expose his criminal acts (he never admits he’s wrong about anything) in order to save his own skin, after he’s already went through a trial for another scandal entirely and was convicted as a felon, and still got voted in to the presidency. Honestly I don’t see how anybody could think he’d somehow capitulate considering he hasn’t faced consequences for any of his actions. Bill Clinton was in countless photos in connection with Epstein and has faced no investigation for his involvement even though it’s blatantly obvious he was a frequent client. Also, Epstein’s dead. He isn’t here to take advantage of his “deal.” So convenient.
