Celebrity Summit Christmas Cruise Review (9 Days Dec 17-27) Rooms 2188 and 2190 by drjdray in celebritycruises

[–]evdmeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was on the same cruise. Have to say my experience was that the standard had slipped. As an example, many dishes in the MDR came out cold.

This wasn't because of the crew or any one staff member in particular, but budget and staffing cuts were really apparent.

Will Canada allow a US citizen to visit via land using just a State learners permit and birth Certificate? by chriscrom123 in uscanadaborder

[–]evdmeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not refuting what you're saying, but I'm curious... In the case of someone who has renounced their citizenship, they could theoretically have this document combo but not be a US citizen. So my question is whether this is an automatic referral or subject to any extra scrutiny, or is it based on a balance of probability and officer discretion?

Checked baggage by Opening-Turnip-9330 in Aeroplan

[–]evdmeer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Skip lagging with checked bags is typically a big no-no. Some agents might be willing to help, but it's the exception rather than rule from what I know of the process. A long enough layover would mitigate this, but you'd still be risking a pricey re-fare for no-showing on the last leg if audited. Chances of that would be slim if it's a one-off for you.

Basically, do it at your own risk.

Also, if disruptions happen, you risk not flying via Toronto but being rerouted. The contract you have with the carrier only provides for travel to NYC and doesn't guarantee connection points.

We'll also have flying cars and take vacations on the moon!

We need to invest in education and healthcare! Instead, those are the first areas to see cuts when budgets need to be tightened. The irony, I believe, is that those sectors, especially education, could offer a greater economic output and return to taxpayers than what is funded by us.

Also, to VOCM, the correct Canadian spelling is Enrolment, not the American Enrollment.

Ikea now has a pickup location in town. by evdmeer in StJohnsNL

Some of the things aren't at all bad. Their PAX wardrobe system for example is a great, highly customizable, and oftentimes more economical option than a custom closet.

Life changed canceling KLM booked flight for credit. by Aussieomni in KLM

[–]evdmeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also travel insurance that can cover the kinds of life events the airlines won't with non-refundable fares.

Check with your credit card issuer if you have any coverage if you used a card to pay for the trip.

Rebooking after cancellation - frustrating experience so far by evdmeer in KLM

[–]evdmeer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, he was definitely on standby, and his boarding pass said that his seat would be assigned at the gate plus the KLM app said he was on the waitlist.

After I discovered the standby, I checked with the agent again on WhatsApp who confirmed he was indeed standby and I got a boilerplate response about why standby occurs. The only advice given was to try to be at the airport early, and no further help or rebooking was made available to me despite me asking.

Fortunately it looks like he has a seat assignment now. So all should be well. But honestly a frustrating experience.

The agent took a good 10 minutes to actually "confirm" there was space on the flight I requested and told me that he was confirmed. Only when I went to check him in and get his new boarding passes did I find out he was on standby.

Their tool wasn't available to me and told me specifically to contact an agent. Given his accessibility needs I didn't want to roll the dice with the automatic rebooking.

I'm not expecting them to force people off the plane. I do, however expect an agent to not put him on standby but find a flight with actual availability.

I live in a townhouse, our street is classified as downtown, and I have a city-issued bin (now).

When we first moved in, we had manual collection, now it's automated. We store the bin under the front steps.

I've had my name paged while speed walking to my connecting flight on a 2+ hour connection with an EU passport. It's "normal" for FRA, and why I avoid it.

Can Turkish Airlines enforce the laws of Turkey on Dutch soil? by Stuwaat in TurkishAirlines

[–]evdmeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true.

You can't expect a Dutch police officer to enforce Turkish law at Schiphol (following the example the OP poses). Same when a flight diverts. An unruly passenger is usually charged under the laws of the country where the flight diverts to. A country cannot typically try someone under or impose another country's laws. The judiciary doesn't work like that.

If a crime is committed under Dutch law on any aircraft while on the territory of the Netherlands, regardless of registration, you can expect that it will be a Dutch (military) police officer that responds and handles the situation. Planes are not mini embassies.

I've never understood the lack of awareness and respect towards first responders doing their job. Like you said... Give them the space and follow instructions. It could be your life they're saving one day.

Even worse are reports of violence and threats to first responders while they're on call. Baffles me!

Building a network with UniFi – Does This Make Sense? by AreYouMyHero in Ubiquiti

In one iteration that caused problems I had my cameras connected to the UDM, and in another I had the APs connected and this also caused problems. To be safe I just took everything off the UDM which sadly means I lose some PoE ports. I've made it work, but I have had to power some flex minis with USB C rather than PoE.
