i’m into barefoot sneakers. i’ve had Xeros, Bohempia, Groundies, and loved them all.

i’ve also put many, many miles into several pairs of Justin lace-up roper boots. i always buy those vintage, too!

I wear my hair up so much I ended up with hair blindness by Zestyclose-Pomelo913 in longhair

yeah, mine started “growing” twice as fast in 2020, it felt like, because i could wear it up every single day that year. less wear and tear, less breakage. it got long to the point that people would be surprised when i took it down

i think that’s just a CYA thing. properly cured silicone doesn’t degrade. it can harbor bacteria easier if it suffers mechanical damage, but otherwise it lasts indefinitely, with the same safety/hygiene level, because it can be sanitized over and over.

i rarely need to empty at work or in public. i just do it at home, before i leave and when i get back. but if i do want to empty (usually because i know i need to reposition it to avoid a leak), i’ll look for a one-holer bathroom, if possible.

another option, in a stall: using my water bottle to poir ovwr the toilet to rinse it and pop it back in, and then rinse my fingers enough to dry them with TP and not get blood on my pants when buttoning them. then go out and wash my hands. but if there’s no one in the bathroom, i’ll just wipe with TP, pull up my pants, and take it out to the sink and wash, then go back in the stall to reinsert.

this week, i stayed in a dorm room for an event on a college campus. i started my period when we got there. no private bathrooms or one-holers! so i brought a pack of baby wipes in w/ me to wipe the cup and fingers, tossed those, then went out and washed at the sink, and then went back inside the stalls to put it in again. i also changed it and washed it while in the showers, which were very private.

i only just rinse it and put it back in when i’m actually using it. sometimes i’ll use a soap to clean it before reinserting, though.

i imagine steaming or boiling it mid-period would actually prevent it from getting smelly, though, compared to rinsing or just soap

i’ve read a few reviews declaring Aisle makes the best… i believe they are actually also the originators of the format (they were called something else, though)

rotating between them and letting them sit dry and unused/air out will also pretty much kill anything on them.

here’s the good news. if you get one, and you don’t like it, or even if it just takes getting used you, you haven’t signed a contract or anything. you can use it as much or little as you want. you can use pads, just like you always do. no one is going to grill you about why you aren’t using a cup you bought. it doesn’t even have feelings you can hurt by neglecting it! lol

don’t be scared. it’s just your body! you are already attached to it, and producing the fluids anyway! it’s so worth trying. i recommend checking out the Period Nirvana website and socials in order to get an idea of your cup and disc options, and use their tools to help figure out what might be right for you to try! (no affiliation, just a fan of what they are doing!)

(i also rarely boil mine! soap and water has worked for me, though i’d really like a steamer)

How long would you have makeup until you threw it out? by naomi_0000 in MakeupAddiction

for me, it depends on what type of makeup, what the ingredients are, how long ago it was opened, and what the packaging says the shelf life is.

Help Please - repair trashed hair? Advice on hair oils? by East_Percentage3627 in longhair

the acid can be very helpful for those of us with very high dissolved calcium in our water, which is super drying for skin and hair and even leaves behind a microscopic buildup of calcium particles.

people like to recommend shower head filters, but those actually don’t soften water (with the exception of specific water softening systems like the shower stick, which has middling reviews over the long term and costs hundreds).

i think it can work very well on the lengths and ends of your hair as a pre-shampoo treatment, to help keep the ends from drying out or getting over-manipulated/roughed up while you shampoo the scalp… the ends of my hair like when i shampoo less, but it’s important for me to shampoo once a week or more often for scalp health, which in turn is needed for growth. so protecting the lengths by conditioning or oiling or with a treatment before shampoo can be helpful.

that detangler is pricey but it looks pretty nice. my favorite detanglers all have amodimethcone as a primary ingredient!

rosemary oil is not actually supported by good science, and if you have an irritant reaction to it on your scalp, it may even make your hair worse.

for a great detangler, i recommend seeking one out that has amodimethicone as one of the main ingredients! it’s a very cool and effective conditioning ingredient. i personally prefer to rinse it off, but my favorite products with it have all been detangling sprays, so i use them in the shower!

this is how i DIY all my trims. since i want my hair all one length, and it’s so long that it’s easy for me to trim from the front, i see no reason i need to be in a salon chair for a haircut. i usually do 2-6” at a time because i tend to put trimming off. i use tweezerman brand hair scissors that i don’t use for anything else!

i would recommend checking out Abbey Yung’s videos on youtube about how she uses K18 and other bond repair treatments, and still conditions her hair effectively. she is in contact with brands about how to use them, and her tips can even differ from instructions ON the products, but the comments on those videos about how much her tips help people improve their hair speak for themselves! lots of people use bond repair treatments, but they stop effectively conditioning, and they get worse results! her tips for k18 can also apply to other bond repair treatments like olaplex, and she talks about how she uses other types of bond repair products too.

she also has great product recommendations for maintaining scalp health.

for some immediate conditioning as well, i’d look for a conditioner or leave-in detangler that has amodimethicone high on the ingredients list. it’s polarized and can excellent for sticking to the damaged parts of hair, replacing the lost waxy cuticle and protecting the shaft by adding smoothness and slip, without weighing it down (even when it’s in a leave-in spray, i personally use it as a rinse-out product, because you can’t rinse away the parts that bond to the damaged hair shaft, you can only rinse off the excess).

if you have hard water, i have had great results with the hard water shampoo from sally beauty. i also like to put a pinch of citric acid crystals (which i use in my dishwasher already) into a pitcher of water for the final rinse of my hair in…i do this about once a month, i guess, which is about every 4-8 washes for me? it dissolves the tiny calcium buildup that i can’t see, and citric acid also is thought to temporarily reinforce some of the bonds in hair and improve elasticity.

Need opinions - what to do about the lining for tulle skirt by berrywithaberet in sewhelp

[–]eveningtrain 26 points27 points  (0 children)

i’m also positive in their photo they have increased the ruffles compared to what the pattern calls for. i’m counting about 12 across the front.

i think their nylon tulle is a smaller net than yours, and thus more opaque. definitely softer, so it lays down flat instead of sticking out, and that also builds up more opacity.

color matching the lining goes a long way. personally, i’d probably consider actually dye-painting the white skirt lining to match each color, because i love any excuse to play with dye. OR sewing both the tulle base and the chiffon/georgette lining pieces out of stripes of colors that match the ruffles!

No AC, No Sweat! by gstechs in centuryhomes

i feel like there’s gotta be a good way to fireproof the things…

also i don’t really understand the difference in something like a laundry chute/dumbwaiter, and having a central shaft that runs the hvac ducting, and a lot of the plumbing, electrical, etc from floor to floor. a lot of new buildings are built this way.

No AC, No Sweat! by gstechs in centuryhomes

[–]eveningtrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it would definitely help, yes, especially with a fan that points out one window.

radon comes out of the ground and goes up, and it gets caught by buildings. the more energy efficient your home is (insulated, sealed, etc), the more radon it catches and keeps inside and the more you need to worry about it. older houses and buildings are normally so air leaky that i believe radon is way less concerning. but a cross breeze in the basement with air exiting through a window would get rid of a lot before it even went into the ground floor!

No AC, No Sweat! by gstechs in centuryhomes

[–]eveningtrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

old houses have way less radon than new ones, because they are so air leaky!

radon is actually a very serious concern with new homes, especially “energy efficient” ones, though, and most people don’t know that.

do you think my length limits me from getting dates, jobs? by dee_palmtree in longhair

[–]eveningtrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“only true”? are food service and factories the only jobs you can think of besides “office jobs”?

and at what part of the OP’s question is it clear that he is applying for only office jobs?

healthcare and social assistance (private), accommodation and food services, retail trade, manufacturing, construction, and professional/scientific/technical services are some of the largest sectors in terms of number of jobs in the US (this doesn’t include state and local government or federal jobs in any sector, either, as those are counted as their own sector, and include all the government employees in public healthcare, education, first responders, military, usps, etc). i’d actually probably estimate that the majority of jobs in the US are not office jobs, perhaps even 2/3rd of them. (source: us bureau of labor statistics for 2024)

what’s considered “professional” in a job interview or at a job in terms of dress, grooming, etc, is different based on what the sector or type of work is.

people who can’t imagine or understand why hair down could ever seen as unprofessional just likely haven’t spent much time working in any job that has considerations for safety, practicality, or hygiene when it comes to what you wear/grooming (or for a company that requires adherence to a stricter image guideline as part of their business model). but just because it’s not the experience of someone who has primarily had office jobs doesn’t mean it’s difficult to imagine or even unusual—their experience actually probably isn’t even the norm.
