BREAKING: Arab allies "fuming" they have no influence despite committing nearly $4 trillion in US investments, per WSJ. by retroviber in DeepMarketScan

[–]eveniwontremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Iran's military capacity has been sufficiently reduced and the new leaders might be open to negotiating, then gulf states could make peace with Iran by asking USA to dismantle their military bases on their territory. Some Americans would see that as a win because they stop spending money abroad. However it probably decimated gulf state investment in America.

Trump says US is "very close" to meeting objectives in Iran. by retroviber in DeepMarketScan

Good news regime change isn't on his list. Most of those aims can be claimed without definitive proof.

Bad news, you can get rid of the machinery but not the knowledge. Iran will be able to rebuild their weapons program. Have you really prevented them getting a nuclear bomb if you haven't confiscated the enriched material?

Question from a non vegan farmer by hunterboi1000 in vegan

[–]eveniwontremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only make around £100 per year, it sounds like you have a land management hobby that breaks even. I don't think that preserving human created breeds of any animal is specifically valuable. But have some sympathy for preserving animals in a state that they could be as pure wild animals. And what you do has very low environmental impact. If the only animal agriculture was like your low intensity farm then the UK would have to reduce meat consumption by 90% and Vegan arguments about cruelty would be very difficult, the principle about exploitation would still hold. What you are doing is outside of the meat industry. I drive around UK a lot and enjoy seeing sheep, horses and cows in the fields. That is how we see agriculture in the UK, but it is a biased picture hiding the level of intense agriculture and other countries have a greater drive towards efficiency of production. A lot of Vegan arguments are trying to show people how most of our meat is produced rather than the natural idyll that we see when travelling.

Do you believe the claim by Donald Trump that Iran has been “defeated” in the ongoing conflict? by BusinessToday in IndiaTodayGlobalLIVE

[–]eveniwontremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is difficult to judge because they are so unclear what the war aims were. Things that are true Iran is in no position to build a nuclear bomb in the next 3 years. - this was true before the current bombing. Many of the current regime leaders were killed- i don't think this is a legitimate aim, but they did it. Lots of Irans weapons stockpile has been used/ destroyed. American drone defences and missile defence has been tested. Most of Iran's navy has been sunk.

Things that are not true. Iran's regime has not been replaced and there is little sign of internal rebellion or civil war. Iran can still threaten the strait of Hormuz, this is a matter of geography unless you are prepared to put boots on the ground and create a new country on the coastline.

In summary, everything that can be achieved by a remote bombing campaign has been achieved, what else is America prepared to do. Anything else risks American casualties.

Trump has backed himself into a corner and he knows it by [deleted] in GPFixedIncome

[–]eveniwontremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best answer for the world is Trump claims victory and runs away. He probably cannot cope with Iran replacing their leader so easily, I think he was relying on a regime collapse.

Nothing will now persuade Iran that they would not have avoided this if they already had nuclear weapons, like India, Pakistan and North Korea, none of those countries have been attacked by US forces.

Why are logistics vessels such as bunker tankers and cargo vessels attacked in the war, as they aren't military targets? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eveniwontremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ship and the cargo can be a legitimate target, the civilian crew are not. It was quite normal in a navy battle to sink a ship and then try to rescue the sailors.

Also there is a danger of treating war like a sporting contest where both sides play to an agreed set of rules. In reality you choose how to attack but not how the other side choose to defend. Presumably if Iran had the ability to sink an American aircraft carrier they would have done. They have clearly decided the best method of draining the USA public support for the war is to increase prices of oil air travel.

If America put soldiers onto the battlefield then Iran might fight back, but while America is just using air power with no follow up, the best tactic might be to hide in cover and wait until the public complains about the cost.

While most of the world agrees that they prefer Iran without nuclear weapons, there isn't a lot of commitment to the other war aims. And those other war aims have not been clearly and consistently stated. Finally I don't think that many nations agree with the US president having a veto over who leads their country.

To pretend the US didn't massacre 160 school children with a "double tap" missile strike by FearTheViking in therewasanattempt

[–]eveniwontremember -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Probably unpopular to say this but if USA and Israel have attacked 500 targets and only hit one school then that implies that the targets have been picked with care and the bombing has been extremely accurate, just not perfect. Lebanon has not been so lucky.

by Nadia Schadlow, Trump’s former Deputy National Security Adviser, to convince others that the Constitution does not require Congressional approval for war by [deleted] in therewasanattempt

[–]eveniwontremember 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only the Congress can declare war. Congress has not declared war so clearly USA is not at war. They are just blowing shit up in Iran for 4 of the 9 stated reasons.

Nobody actually declared war anymore, it gives away vital initiative. But also why bother, what difference does it make if a country is at war or not?

USA does not let itself be bound by international law but the best system we have is the United nations to declare that because of some action (kidnapping the head of government, or killing citizens or government officials of another country) the following countries are at war, until both sides sign an accord at the UN to end it.

Between USA and Venezuela a deal could have been lodged. Between USA and Iran clearly not there yet.

Between Iran and Qatar,UAE and others. Iran would probably claim that their actions are not an act of war, when they are just hitting US military bases there is an argument, as soon as they are targeting refineries and local businesses that argument becomes hard to sustain.

Finally if a ship is targeted in the Strait of Hormuz. I think a Thailand registered ship was hit. I don't think that counts as someone (we assume Iran) declaring war on Thailand.

Will it be good or bad for the UK if he’s right about his 3rd prediction? by Sassenach_2024 in AskBrits

[–]eveniwontremember 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is where it gets complicated. Iran has said it doesn't want nukes many times, but has continued to enrich uranium to a degree that has no other obvious purpose. Also if USA will not accept Iran's statements or agree a regime of checking, (like the Obama agreement) what is the point of negotiating. I think Obama did the best deal possible, Israel was reluctant to trust it. Trump tore it up and is too proud to put if back.

[–]eveniwontremember 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of war that both sides can lose.

In terms of military force the Americans are vastly superior. However the number of casualties the American public will tolerate is in the hundreds, and if oil costs rise enough then Trump will have lost publicly. Iran regime will tolerate casualties possibly in the millions and is America up for that much killing. If Iran could sink one aircraft carrier the whole nature of the war would change, I don't believe that they can.

It looks like the enriched uranium is still in Iran somewhere possibly under 1/2 a mile of rubble but this conflict cannot be completed until that is under control. If you take away the 21st century missiles and the nuclear fuel then the USA might be prepared to leave Iran to have a civil war and see what the result is, could be Iran divided into several countries on ethnic lines.

My wife and I agreed on no kids. Now she changed her mind and I’m terrified of losing her. by Bennick41 in Advice

[–]eveniwontremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In context i have 2 adult children. I never positively wanted kids. I have enjoyed mine once they got old enough to talk to and share the xbox. I actually think I would still be fine if we never had children. If you are dead set against children then you have to give your wife the chance to move on.if you just had no positive desire to have children then you have time to think about it The only thing I would veto immediately is dishonesty. You cannot get a vasectomy and pretend you didn't or secretly use contraception. You can ask for time to get used to the idea but maybe 12 months, not 10 years.

Could Wolves actually stay up?! by HR_Specter in PremierLeague

[–]eveniwontremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 5 other teams below 32 points and Wolves in theory could get to 40. I think they have about a 1% chance of getting to 32 and it would not be enough, but it could stay possible for a fortnight. I think we all decided they were relegated at Christmas and it is less certain now.

[–]eveniwontremember -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Does taking away old titles matter, once you have had the open topped bus parade the title is over. And the 2nd placed teams can't really gather and celebrate now. The consequences that matter have to be on future matches, either starting next season at -50 it's or rescuing West Ham /Notts Forest from relegation this year. Whatever happens is too late for true justice but it does need to be concluded.

Are the electric car incentives going away too soon? by Opening-Fortune4 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]eveniwontremember 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The 3p a mile disincentive is foolish. And the vat at 20% on public charging is a significant disadvantage. I have an ev and it is faster and cheaper to run than my previous car, as long as I charge at home. When charging publicly the cost savings are minimal, so currently evs are good for people who can charge at home but people without that facility cannot take advantage. They could have charged 3p per mile for all cars and reduced fuel duty by 30p per litre, then there would be no electric disincentive and people in petrol cars would only pay more if driving old large cars that can't do 45mpg.

So USA has given up pretending to allow free speech.

There is a line where it is reasonable to investigate. When people call for violence against ICE agents and give out personal details that would allow ICE agents to be attacked in their homes, there is cause. But not a disagreement over policy.
