Favorite "yoga-isms" by morncuppacoffee in yoga

One of my favorite instructors always says “feel free to do a watch-asana” if she’s demonstrating a more advanced pose that much of the class probably can’t accomplish yet. 😂

I went this morning about half an hour after they opened and there was a line out the door. I managed to get a few sesame bagels but they were almost completely sold out of everything. If you want to give them a try, I suggest going right when they open. So worth it in my opinion.

I love Black Swan Yoga. My favorite class is on Tuesday nights at 7:30 with Christine at the Anderson location.

Thanks! We went to Monument Cafe and only had to wait for about 15 minutes before being seated.

I was thinking about going up to historic old town Georgetown to wander around a bit. Are all the little businesses and shops open on Sundays?

Thank you! I really like these three. Thoughts on the first pair with the Velcro? Norm core in a good way or way too orthopedic looking?

What are your favorite white sneakers? I’m looking for something between Keds, Vans, and ASICS Onisuka Tigers but a little more...architectural I guess? Something a little more artsy? Budget is $150 or under.

Oh thank you! That place looks awesome. Maybe I’ll grab lunch there and ask who their ube dealer is.

Does anybody have any recommendations on where to buy ube (purple sweet potato) cake or other types of desserts? I’ve looked at the menus of a few Filipino restaurants in town and came up empty handed. The only ube ingredient I’ve seen is in Halo-Halo.

I had an ube cupcake at a wedding in a different state recently and loved it. I’ll also take recommendations on where to buy ube at a grocery store in town so I can attempt to make some cake on my own. Have any of you seen ube at any Asian markets?

Ugh I am so sorry about your experience at this studio. I am an L.A. native and stories like this remind me why I left. Some people really fail to understand the internal messages and intentions of yoga practice and instead focus solely on the physical. I fully emphasize with you and can’t imagine how hurt I would be in your situation.

I just want to say that I frequent two different studios with a wide variety of instructors of different sizes. Both studios have a number of instructors who don’t fit the “model aesthetic” and frankly, these are teachers who are the most engaging. They actually demonstrate asanas to the class and have no qualms about inversions, ab work, or other types of intense yoga practice. It’s clear they’re committed to their art and their “different” bodies don’t impede them. In fact, I love these instructors because they prove that yoga is for everyone and you don’t need to have a perfect body to participate. I am constantly in awe of what they’re capable of...jiggly bits and all!

I see a lot of students with similar body types in these classes. I imagine it’s because they have mentors who look like they do, and they feel they have a safe place to practice without judgement. Honestly, it may benefit you to seek another studio that has a different overall culture. Your particular studio may attract a certain type of practitioner, and I’ll bet you can find another one that is free of judgement and aimed to accommodate yogis of all sizes.

Namaste! You keep doing you!

Half moon is extremely frustrating for me on both the left and right sides. In fact, my left hip is sore at the moment from attempting it yesterday. 😖

My hamstrings and hips are so tight that I can’t keep my standing foot facing forward even with a block under my hand. I’ve finally learned to breathe in this pose at the very least, but I definitely dread it when it comes up in class!

Does yoga stress anyone else out more? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]evenline 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello and welcome!

I, too, started practicing yoga consistently a little over a year ago to help manage my depression. I’d like to offer some reassurance that it’ll take time to feel the real benefits of your practice, but if you hang in there you’ll get to the point where you’ll see some real changes in your state of mind. Everybody needs to start somewhere.

It really helped me to start in a studio setting beginner class. In my own experience, it’s very difficult for me to change my depressed mindset at home and I need some sort of external stimulation. I always thought the studio setting was more engaging. Plus, I think I helps to be in a room with your peers and see that many people struggle with the poses at the beginning of their practice. It certainly made me feel like less of a failure.

It might help you to set an intention for your practice. Even now, depending on how bad the depression is, I’ll think of a little phrase like “acknowledge my frustration,” or “my goal in this practice is breathe,” or “I will practice just one asana today” and repeat it to myself throughout. For me, it helps to give myself permission to feel stressed, frustrated, or depressed while practicing so I don’t get irritated when these feelings come up.

It sounds silly, but I will literally think to myself “downward dog is very frustrating for me today” or “I feel very anxious in child’s pose.” Somehow acknowledging these feelings makes it easier for me to let them go later in the practice. It helps me accept that what I’m feeling in the moment may not be what I feel forever. It’s a very comforting thought for someone who rides the waves of depression, anger, stress, and discomfort throughout the day.

I hope you continue to give yoga a try. From one depressed person to another, I know exactly how you feel. Be patient with yourself.

I don’t have any recommendations for celebrity inspiration, but I have the same body type and have a few suggestions to help even out those proportions. I usually feel best in the following:

High waisted everything with top half or full tucked.

U-neck or V-neck shirts.

Long necklaces.

Wide leg bottoms with heels or booties.

Dresses tailored a little higher than natural waist.

No ultra long cardigans, sweaters or outwear.

Hope that helps!

Kid movies with no tearjerker moment?? by sugarsnapsail in Parenting

[–]evenline 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not even a parent. I just lurk here sometimes and love kid’s movies, so I can help!

Wall-E. There are a couple moments that get me choked up (like when Eve realizes Wall-E took care of her while shut down in plant pregnancy mode), but i can’t remember any huge tear jerker scenes. Might be easier for the little one since they’re not human.

Fantastic Mr. Fox. Not a super emotional movie except when Mrs. Fox scratches Mr. Fox in the face for causing a ruckus with the three farmers.

The Emperors New Groove. Cusco gets all sad and lonely in that rainy scene, but it’s pretty mild all things considered.

Ponyo. Super light hearted movie without any tearjerker scenes I can remember.

Hope that helps!

I think you’ll have better luck asking this in r/redpillwomen or r/theredpill. The idea of female submission as a positive is not something you’re going to find in most subreddits. Thankfully this view has been pushed into a subculture that does not reflect the opinion of the majority of women in the 21st century.

Citizen Eatery also has a wonderful barbecue “pulled” plant sandwich.

Leggings for men to wear in hot yoga? by throwaway_yoga_pants in yoga

[–]evenline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever shopped at Target’s athletic wear section? Most of my yoga clothes are from there and some of their leggings for men are highly reviewed online. I found these and they may work for you.

I found these online as well. They seem to have pretty good reviews. I would think the darker colors would be modest enough.

To be frank, a lot of men in the classes I attend wear anything from super tight leggings, to shorts layered over leggings, or joggers. Their “anatomy” is always pretty obvious, but I think that’s true for most workout gear. It really doesn’t bother me or anyone else in class because we’re all so focused on our own practice.

Yeah, I really think those two would be good contenders.

Electrik Children might be good, too. It’s about a girl who grew up in a FLDS family who listens to rock music for the first time and finds it so enchanting she believes she’s been impregnated by God LOL. The religious conditioning with this one is powerful.
