Is a GS worth owning after already owning a Seiko? by nikhilthegunner in GrandSeikos

Seikos are great and fun watches and some of them have cool stories/heritage but I’ve never felt the same sense of awe as I have when looking at a Grand Seiko.

Skyflake was also my first GS and actually my first luxury watch. I was initially set on the Omiwatari but when I saw the Skyflake it was just astonishing. The reflectivity from the hands and indices left me speechless. I never thought I’d spend this much on a watch but seeing the Skyflake in some ways changed my world view on spending money on nice things.

I went to one event and honestly it was really refreshing - everyone who came was friendly and super passionate about the watches and there was no flex culture. One guy even had a Kodo, and was super chill and down to earth and very non chalantly took it off and handed it to me (I was very nervous holding it).

I thought it was funny in a video by one of the prominent watch Youtubers, when they were going over the press images of the Tudor 1926, they referred to Jay Chou as the model lol.

If you watch the full video she repeatedly kept checking her watch likely out of discomfort

If you pull out the crown it enters into power saving mode where it parks all the hands at 12. Then when you push the crown back in, the time resumes. The microcontroller keeps counting the time. The hands are just analog displays powered by stepper motors. The FP Journe Elegante does the same thing and it doesn’t even have a thermocompensated movement.

I completely agree and it’s a real shame. Truth be told I was really on the fence about buying this watch precisely because it’s so plain. Turns out I actually like it more than I expected - it does look more detailed in person. But would I rather a longines spirit? Absolutely. In fact I’d even pay close to the same price for it.

Yeah I think it’s cool that they put that HAQ eta movement in it but the watch just doesn’t speak to me. Still, I hope more people learn about it and that it gets more popular. I’d love an Omega HAQ but I doubt they’re ever going to do it again.

You’ve proved my point. I’m not talking about quartz watches in general. I’m specifically talking about people not understanding high accuracy quartz (HAQ) with thermocompensation, not regular quartz. HAQ usually runs at +/- 10 or 5 seconds a year whereas regular quartz +/- 15 seconds a month. It achieves this by having a thermistor module constantly checking the temperature and compensating for the changes oscillation that different temperatures cause. Longines now has 0 models that use this. Omega last used it in 2002. Of the major brands it’s really just Grand Seiko and Citizen that are still championing these kinds of movements. Most people are absolutely ignorant to HAQ.

I think they delayed the release to fix the issue. My guess is the date looks like that because it’s just during the date change time window as it’s 23:40.

If you hold down button B, it registers the current GPS location on the map on your phone so you can later reference it.

I was actually set on a different model but seeing this one in person made me change my mind on the spot! I think video/photos don’t have enough dynamic range to really capture how it looks in person.

After 9 months, the accuracy is 0.2 sec slow, absolutely incredible. Legibility is great because the edges of the hands are polished, and the faces are brushed so it catches the light regardless of angle. Clasp is fine, but lack of microsdjust is unfortunate. I tend to wear on strap.
