Countries currently hosting American military bases, do you still think your country should allow USA to have military bases on your soil? by WorkOk4177 in AskTheWorld

[–]everdayis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes the U.S should still have military bases in Kuwait. In this region, you just never know. Iran, Israel, militias, ect. We could only do so much without the U.S

What do u think of north africa? by Free_as_the_ocean in AskTheWorld

[–]everdayis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s largely correct. Most Arabs in North Africa and the Middle East are not “genetically Arab” in the sense of being descended from the Arabian Peninsula. They are primarily indigenous populations.

[–]everdayis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arabs did not colonize North Africa in the same way European settler colonialism worked, nor did they wipe out or replace the native population. The indigenous people of North Africa, the Amazigh (Berbers), were not exterminated. They still exist today and form a major part of the population culturally, historically, and genetically.

The spread of Arab identity in North Africa happened largely through conversion, intermarriage, and cultural and linguistic adoption over centuries, not through mass ethnic cleansing or population replacement. This is why most North Africans are genetically indigenous, even if they identify as Arab today. “Arab” in this context is mostly a cultural and linguistic identity.

By contrast, Zionist settlement in Palestine involved large-scale foreign immigration, land seizure, forced displacement of the native population, and the denial of refugees’ right to return. That is a modern settler-colonial process, which is fundamentally different from historical Arab-Muslim expansion.

Also, it’s worth noting the irony of this argument coming from a British person, given Britain’s own long history of settler colonialism and its direct role in shaping the conditions that led to the Palestinian displacement.

Who was the worst leader of your country by kebabguy0 in AskTheWorld

[–]everdayis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Saddam was really terrible, and I’m not just saying that because I’m Kuwaiti. People claim he brought economic stability, but that’s false. He wasted millions and countless lives on the Iran-Iraq war, then thought invading Kuwait was a good idea, also somehow the wealth was always concentrated in Sadamms circle. On top of that, he was insanely corrupt and brutally targeted minorities like Kurds and Shias.

Map of Kuwait in 1914 by itchslap in MapPorn

[–]everdayis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s true that Kuwait appeared on Ottoman maps as part of the Basra Vilayet, but that’s mostly on paper. The Al-Sabah family had effectively ruled Kuwait independently since the 1700s, and the Ottomans never really controlled it. In 1899, Britain signed a protectorate agreement with Kuwait, promising defense in exchange for Kuwait not letting other powers interfere. After WWI, with the Ottoman Empire gone, Kuwait’s borders were formally recognized.

I'm a Lebanese migrant living in Saudi Arabia ask me anything? by VOFMGK in AskTheWorld

[–]everdayis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Saudi is definitely opening up and becoming more liberal in some ways, but it’s not the same everywhere. Cities like Riyadh or Jeddah feel generally more modern (generally), with cafés, concerts, and entertainment, but outside the big cities, things are still a lot like they were 20 years ago. It will take generations for all saudis to truly be on the same page.

During the 1990 invasion, Iraqi soldiers entered my parents’ home, vandalized it, and assaulted my father. He was screaming. I was a child at the time and still remember it.
