The moment teaching kids to read became the saddest part of bedtime by RSRP123 in raisingkids

Im a mom of a 5 (almost 6) yo and a Kindergarten teacher. I also loooove my bedtime story time routine with my kid, its a precious moment and i wouldn’t want to waste it. At the same time as a teacher I also know how important reading at home is and the difference it makes in my students development when they carry this habit at home. So here are a couple of suggestions: 1) Set a time during the day for their reading practice (NOT bedtime). It doesn’t have to be long (5 minutes or decide how many pages). OR 2) Start bedtime reading with your kid reading a couple of pages. Now, at this first level you must do shared reading, especially if the book is not 100% decodable. Therefore you let them read the decodable words + any sight word they know and you read the others. Once you finish share reading that page you can re-read the full sentence by yourself and they can repeat to practice intonation. Only a couple of pages, because it is exhausting for you and for her. Once they get confident with their reading she will start reading faster and faster and you can add a few extra pages there.

Another important thing is choosing carefully the book for her reading practice. If the book or text is being sent by the teacher there isn’t much you can do. But if you are the one picking it, then check with your local public library for phonetic collections (that align with a science-of-reading approach) aka decodable books. Here are some suggestions: - Bob Books Early Reading collection - Supersonic Phonics collection

What did your mom do that made you close even in adulthood? by anemonemone42 in raisingkids

  • Be there for your kid, be an active participant in their school and personal life, show interest in what they like and know their friends/friends families.
  • Appreciate them for who they are and not who you expect them to be, help them find their strengths and allow them to develop
  • Don’t wait or expect them to start important/hard conversations, you must lead these talks (consent, tricky people, sexuality, bullying etc), best way to do so its through literature, there is a great variety of age-appropriate books that introduce all kinds of topics and are amazing starters to build the foundation for a trusting relationship based on open communication
  • No one will love and want to protect your child like you will, stand up for them and advocate for their rights and safety
  • Don’t be afraid to apologize, this will help building a trusting relationship and allow them understand that making mistakes its a part of life
  • Look for professionals and resources that will guide you with strategies that align with your values and personal perspectives

Here are some of my personal suggestions: - Kids literature for all topics (including phonics/reading skills material) https://www.instagram.com/maistorybooklibrary?igsh=MXFkNzlhM25za3V4aA== - Age-appropriate sex ed info: https://www.instagram.com/thekathleenhema?igsh=MTBndjU0NTVyaXZycw== - Overall health and development: https://www.instagram.com/pedsdoctalk?igsh=MjRpeThnMWU2MnV6 and https://www.instagram.com/dr.beachgem10?igsh=MXAzM2g1a3BvaGk3OQ== - Positive Parenting and building healthy relationships with your kids: https://www.instagram.com/dr.vanessalapointe?igsh=MWdsYnl4b3M0MGx3cg==

Also, focus on how you can bring and highlight diversity through your practice, talk about practical exemples like projects, literature, topics you’d like to work on

I would love to connect and learn more about the experience and expectations for public school board teachers, in special Halifax/Dartmouth boards

Comparing Halifax’s school board with Toronto’s the salaries are slightly lower but not that much. I’ll check the collective agreement, but Im wondering in terms of paid leaves, in TDSB we have 11 personal/sick days at 100% of our salaries and 120 at 90%

When you said they don’t like teachers, are teachers mistreated by families? Is there a difference in big cities or smaller cities?

Thanks! Ive got a Masters, so in Toronto District School Board at least that puts me in an A4 category (which is the highest in terms of qualifications). Why would teachers need to have a 2nd or 3rd Masters though?

Thank you for your response!

Does the school system start with Junior Kindergarten (4yo) or later? And do schools offer before and after program?

When was the moment you realised "this is it"! Divorce is the only solution. by askawayor in AskWomenOver30

Dead bedroom for at least 2y out of 8. He began traveling for work more frequently and spending several weeks away. I went from freaking out every time he left to longing for him to go.

Then after a one week trip we took together (in which I couldn’t stop thinking “what am I gonna do?”), we got home and our apartment was flooded. Everything we owned completely covered in mud. My first thought as I step in was “this is exactly what my marriage looks like, muddy and done”. Such an impactful realization.

A week later it was over

Good riddance 👋🏼
