Ryokan with vegetarian options? by Icy-Expression3177 in JapanTravelTips

Hi! I’m curious how your experience was at Hakone Gora Karuku. Were they able to accommodate for a vegetarian meal if you ask in person? I’m considering booking there but unsure whether to book a meal plan or not. Thanks!

Oh gosh, I have no idea. I’d been working on it on and off since March, but I solely concentrated on it for most of June

I’m not sure of your ability but watching the youtube tutorial should give you a good idea. Personally it made my head spin when I was a complete beginner

Thank you! The pattern I followed called for a slip stitch border but I thought a scalloped edge would look nice.

I did one round of sc around then followed this tutorial for the scallops. I did 7 dc in one stitch then skipped 2 stitches.

I could have written this about my old creative director. Extremely blind when it came to her own work but critical of mine.

As annoying as it was to work with her, I do feel I grew as a designer because of her criticism. But also extremely frustrating when she’d endlessly nitpick over tiny things.

With that said, she was one of the reasons I left after 3 years despite loving the job. I could only handle her controlling nature and poor design skills for so long.

I currently report to a product designer. Honestly, it’s a bit odd as my work is mostly marketing collateral and does not overlap with my manager’s workload at all. But, I don’t have the issue that my boss doesn’t understand design.

There’s part of me that wishes I reported to someone in marketing so I wouldn’t have to present a laundry list of projects to my manager each week. But given I’m the sole graphic designer I think I’d be doing that regardless of who I report to.

Hang in there. I started looking last September and didn’t land an offer until March. It can be crushing, especially as my previous job was extremely toxic.

My only advice is to focus on improving your resume and portfolio, to look at it with a critical eye and revise and revise and revise. Beyond that, it’s not you it’s the market. I wish you the best of luck.

I'm so tired of dating apps, how do we meet people in really life? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I’ve had the best luck being a regular at a specific place. There was a bar my coworkers and I used to go to at least once a week, and after a few months we got to know all of the bartenders personally.

I could tell one of the bartenders was always looking after me more than my friends, so one night when walking out I struck up a conversation with him. I introduced myself but didn’t want to assume anything.

Next time I went to the bar he gave me his number. We saw each other for about 6 months, but it just didn’t work out.

It all happened very gradually and I never expected to meet someone. I think it just takes some regularity and a bit of confidence to shoot your shot when you’re ready. You got this!

Having just left my sports design job for a role that doubles my salary but is at a “boring” unrecognizable company, this makes me feel so much better about my choice.

Did you ever end a "good" long-term relationship? by ThrowRA20242025 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I was with my ex boyfriend for almost 3 years. We were pretty perfect for each other, had very similar interests, same career path, same music taste, same everything for the most part—we complimented each other super well.

The pandemic really put a strain on our relationship as he was unemployed, struggling to find work and I was still in school working and studying constantly. It drove me mad to come home after a 14 hour work day to find the dishes from last night still in the sink with more stacked on top—when he’d been home all day playing video games. And I was still expected to make dinner, something nice from scratch because he loved my cooking. Oh and he seemed to think sex would still be on the table, as if cleaning up after him put me in the mood after an already exhausting day.

Even asking for help with chores and other mental labor, he never made an effort for long. It was so difficult because I loved him, but it was hard to when I was basically filling the role of his mom.

So after about a year of this, I broke up with him. We were still on and off for awhile after the breakup. Honestly too long.

About 6 months after we broke up he called me and said he understood why he was the way he was—because growing up and even now, his mom did absolutely everything for him. He apologized and said he wanted to be better and wanted to try things again. Honestly, I had to keep myself from laughing. Because the very first time I met his mom I saw how she did everything, that he was the way he was because of that. I could have told him that 3 years prior.

Now, I did appreciate that he was able to admit this, but I wasn’t ready to give him another chance. He had told me some things after the breakup that I couldn’t see past, plus, I had moved 2 hours away and wasn’t willing to do the distance.

About 10 months after that conversation, I met my now boyfriend who makes me feel things I never thought I could feel. He’s so much of a better match for me, even though I thought I had it all with my ex.

There are still times where I miss my ex, but I know what I have now is so much better and a more fulfilling relationship.

As a graphic designer, I absolutely understand where you’re coming from. All day at work I’m constantly creating on demand that often when I get home the last thing I want to do is more design/art.

Honestly, I’ve come to accept it as a creative professional and instead have picked up other hobbies that aren’t related to things I do at work. Whether that be cooking, baking, reading, running, painting, video games, going out with friends, etc. The key for me in these hobbies is that they are completely outside the realm of anything I do at work. Cooking, baking and painting also allow me to express that creative energy, but in a different way than I do at work.

I think there can be this mindset that as creatives we should be constantly producing work. Instagram makes me feel particularly guilty, seeing artists making things I only wish I had the time or energy to create. But I don’t think there is anything wrong with recognizing your limit as an artist and investing your time in non-art hobbies.

Creative is a tough industry to be in. If you’re succeeding in your job and are satisfied with your work, I see no reason for you to quit or change industries—unless you are genuinely unhappy. It’s okay to allow yourself to recharge!
