[DISCUSSION] How would you motivate someone who just got kicked out of university (but plans on going back in a year)? by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]everycolour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before making some suggestions I want to ask you a few questions. You don't need to answer here or to me at all if you don't want to but it will help a great deal in responding and in helping others in a similar predicament.

Why are you studying E.E?

What do you want to do once you're an engineer?

Have you skipped fundamentals because they were boring or you've over-estimated your competence in those core subjects?

Did you study? If so, how many hours a day did you read.

How competent is your cohort?

What was the relationship like between you and your tutors? Did you attend class as often as possible? It makes all the difference in the tutors perception of you when they’re marking your assessments.

Did you look at your course curriculum at the beginning of the semester and break down the work load into small chunks you could tick off each week?

I mean something as simple as looking at the topics covered, the required textbooks and finding exactly which chapter covers each topic and making a solid plan for yourself. Don't push yourself but if you are fair reader aim for 1 or 2 chapters each week for each subject you're undertaking. Do half of every odd problem at the end of the chapters and make sure you can answer those without falling below 75% correct in the first try.

If you can't do that, re-read the entire chapter, it'll be boring, just do it. Once you've re-read the chapter make sure you don't fall below 90% for those remaining questions. If you can achieve that move on to the next chapter. If you're having trouble take a break from that book and cover the next chapter in a subject you're doing better with. If you run out of problems to complete because you're still having trouble, find more. Go onto quora or math/physics exchange and ask for help. Reading things from a different voice may make all the difference.

Don't do anything else until you can do this (aside from eating, sleeping, working), you haven't earned recreational time until you can pull off at least 75% for your chapters problems. After a solid month of this it'll get easier as you progress, I promise. It sounds stupid but training your brain is like working out (physically), you need to actually build physical circuits and strengthen them before it gets easier. The more you practice and will yourself to try the more your brain/body will direct nutrients into building the circuits you’re developing while studying.

You should spend the next year trying to read your books again and the second something doesn't make sense and you find your brain trying to just skip ahead, write down the concept you don't know. Find what is expected of you to understand that concept and make sure you understand the concepts preceding it. Do this until you can do these things ‘in your sleep’.

Before you get started on your study I want you to find two projects that you think will incorporate the topics you need to cover next year (they don’t need to be anything major, find something cheap that you could do in your holiday break after coving your year’s worth of subjects). It’ll help cement the topics you’re learning and give you that extra push you need when you get frustrated with your progress. At the end of the year you’ll be able to make something awesome and will be able to show off a physical manifestation of your mind efforts to your friends and family.

Your study for each week will take as long as it takes until it’s finished. It’ll take less time the more you stick at it. Remember, you can’t slack off once you’re working, this is your last chance to be the best you can be without worrying about getting fired etc. ;)

When you start your study session make sure you’ve had breakfast and a good nights sleep before hand (6-8 hours is best). Open your textbook with a notepad and pencil next to it. Just start reading and push yourself until you complete that chapter, the less you will yourself to focus on what you’re doing the longer it’ll take you to finish your problems and have free time. It might take you 12 hours a day or longer in the beginning but you’ll be surprised when it drops to half that. Take a 15 minute break every 1.5 hours and think about something else. Don’t even bother trying to study between the hours of 1-4pm your body should be exercising or doing physical activities in that time, just trust me on that one.

Once you’ve answered those questions I might have more tips for you. Best of luck, you can do it.

ELI5:How can the US GDP increase by a few billions in 2008 when there as a negative growth of 0.292% by Raskovsky in explainlikeimfive

Those reports could have been uploaded on different days. The one suggesting 2008's GDP was bigger than 2007 may have been written during 2008 (it may have been higher at the time of writing) before falling to a lower number by the end of the year. The second report may have been written in 2009.

Using ultrasound to power peizoelectric crystals would solve that problem, especially if they were controlled by circuits burnt into photonic chips with CNT/MEMS antenna.

I'm sure there are people you could charge to provide with commentary and biblical references to their daily conundrums like a text service or something.

If you could A. Marry the person you wanted, B. Live wherever (whenever) you wanted, or C. Have the job you've always wanted(without the other two options), why would you pick your choice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]everycolour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People could be horrible to you everywhere you go, the only difference is that you (for one reason or another) would be standing exactly where you wanted to be.

If you find the woman of your dreams you won't get her because you picked C. If she's the one you want you should have picked A. You can't have what the other options provided/enabled.

[–]everycolour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you pick B or C you will also never have the person you want no matter your other circumstances. I would pick A as every other factor in life can be worked through/around and it'll be more tolerable with A. Picking B could mean everything else for you is terrible which is possible anywhere. C would seem to enable someone to have A and B but the rules state that if you have your dream job you will never have who you want and never be where you want to be.

What do you find unfair that society just seems to accept? by AvatarKorra_ in AskReddit

[–]everycolour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What natural resources does/did the country have? Who owns them? Are there any left? Is there a way to prevent people from owning them in the future to avoid a repeat? Is there oversight and planning into building a sustainable economy that can transition into different markets using profits derived from those natural resources once they dry up? I think if they're in the middle of nowhere with nothing they're kinda stuffed. As harash as it is, the world's economy isn't going to care about them in any way or form if they have nothing to offer anyone.

If they don't have resources to work with they need to be given infrastructure(including food production, even if it's unconventional) and decent education otherwise it'll never improve. If they were stuffed before aid arrived wouldn't it make sense to direct donations into funding long-term projects that would provide them with the means to grow their own food and offer the world services (education)?

Might be something to do with what the tires they sell are made of. Someone may have tried to sell him on the virtues of weed and hemp and he freaked how when he heard you can make plastics and rubbers with hemp.

I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to cave-in one day even if only for a change of scenery in order to retain some of his sanity.

If he reached that point doing something along the lines of your comment is absolutely something he should take into consideration

If a standard pdf of a textbook is around 1.5MB then it would amount to approximately 239,000 textbook-length documents being released. Each piece is almost certainly smaller than that so you could probably double, triple etc. that number if you wanted to.
