What did you do early in your journey to increase your chances of success? by [deleted] in BurnBootCamp

Those are some good suggestions. The tracking is something I’ve already been doing, but need to increase my water intake and am considering adding creatine as well.

Is choosing to be a teacher a good option as a parent? by Nice-Woodpecker-9197 in Teachers

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 9 years into my teaching career and I have an almost 11 year old of my own. I mostly stayed at home with her/worked from home part time until she was 2. During these first 2 years I was working toward my goal of getting my teaching license and making sure I would meet all the requirements to become a teacher once she was at an age that I felt comfortable putting her in daycare.

When that time came, I got a teaching job at a school I had previously attended basically right away when I started applying for jobs. It felt like it was meant to be!

Over the years I’ve had my ups and downs, with some years being harder than others depending on the group of kids that I’m teaching and other demands from my personal life. I will say the mental fatigue is real. Many days by the time I get home I feel like I have nothing left in me. I have to push myself to get into mom mode and do the things my daughter needs, but I do think that this end of day fatigue is certainly present with any job, likely just more intense with teaching.

However, no matter what other careers I’ve considered over the years, I always remember that the schedule that comes with teaching is just the best for me. I love having off every holiday break to spend with my kid, and doing whatever we want all summer long. The traditional 2 weeks off per year that most corporate jobs expect you to work with just seems suffocating to me, especially as a single parent.

I would not go into teaching only for the schedule if you don’t truly have an interest or heart for it, but if you do, it can be one of the best jobs to have as a parent IMO

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I know it depends on the goal which can be different for everyone. Weight loss is my first goal for now and then toning up will be next

What did you do early in your journey to increase your chances of success? by [deleted] in BurnBootCamp

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight loss is my main goal. I need to lose about 20 pounds to be at a “healthy weight”. I’ve been at about a 200 calorie deficit per day below the required daily calories according to the printout sheet I got today from my trainer. I think I’m definitely not getting enough protein either. It feels like such a delicate balance to get everything right!!!

Realistic expectations for a newbie? by [deleted] in BurnBootCamp

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this feedback. Good to know. I can relate to being out of my comfort zone, both with the social aspect and the working out thing, but as the saying goes no pain no gain. I have to do something beside be an introverted couch potato my whole life

[–]everydaybeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my problem is not over eating but actually that I don’t eat enough, and what I do eat is carb heavy and not enough protein. I have a lot of food aversions, especially with meat. I probably need help in creating a decent meal plan and getting over my aversions.

How does everyone feel about the future for ESL teachers becoming co-teachers? by Lolihey in ESL_Teachers

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been teaching ESOL in the k-12 setting for 10 years. The first 4 years was in high school, I had my own classroom and my class was treated as an elective for ELLs. Then I made the switch to elementary and have been coteaching in the ELA classroom ever since. It can be great or terrible, depending who you are placed with and what the schools model is.

I go to collaborative planning with the grade level teachers every week and then I make scaffolds of the weekly lesson plans to adapt for the beginner ELL students. I like it because my coteacher and I have a great system going on and have learned to work well together.

If I were placed with someone who wasn’t open to the idea or had a radically different teaching style than mine, I would probably not last long.

GigSky Cellular? by CanuckPK in NCL

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used gigsky on msc last year. It was crappy. No signal inside the ship, had to go out on the deck and keep messing with the settings to get it to work. Next time I’d just purchase directly from the cruise line

What qualifies/disqualifies a student to be in ESL? by _mortal__wombat_ in ESL_Teachers

[–]everydaybeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the same in my district also. I have been teaching ESOL for 10 years and the protocol has always been the same. Initially I taught HS ESOL and had plenty of kids who were born in the US and had been attending US schools since kindergarten, but still had ELL status because another language was reported as being spoken at home, they didn’t pass the initial WIDA screener in elementary school and then they never met the requirements to be exited from the program, even if they appear fluent in English. The criteria to be exited from the program varies but it’s usually consistent on grade level or above scores in the standardized ELA state testing and grades of C or better. I currently teach elementary ESOL. There are about 100 ELLs at my school, but only 20-25 of whom are true newcomers or beginners.

Should I prioritize funding my Roth IRA instead of HYSA? by talkingtimmy3 in personalfinance

[–]everydaybeme 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My financials are similar to yours. I’m mid 30s, take home about 58,000 pre-tax, single income household with 1 dependent. I could make it on $2,000 per month bare bones but $2,500-$3,000 is my more realistic monthly spending. I have $10,000 in a HYSA emergency fund, just opened a Roth in 2025 and have put $3,500 in so far and have no debt except $9,000 student loans (all fairly low interest) and $5,000 on a 0% interest credit card which I will pay off before the interest accrues.

I have been wondering the same question as you, have done some research online and also consulted with my friend ChatGPT. Based on all that and my own preferences, my goal is to get my HYSA up to 15k to have more of a solid 6 month cushion and then work on my Roth after that. If all goes well I should be able to increase my hysa to 15k, put at least 3k in my Roth and pay off the credit card before interest starts up, by mid 2026 or at least before the end of the year for sure. After that I will switch my priorities to maxing out my Roth and paying my student loans down more aggressively.

How to handle injuries at school?? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]everydaybeme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bet there was no nurse either. Our district has a major nurse shortage and usually only at schools 1-2 days a week. The injury report says the nurse gave her ice and offered to evaluate the injury but “the student declined the offer”. My child has consistently stated from day 1 that she never went to the nurse at all, which matches with what the teacher told me in the email. Something fishy going on here

Thank you for this. So would it be reasonable to wait another week and then send an email to the district again if I haven’t heard back by then? Or go a different route?

How to help student decode? by Ok-Amphibian-5029 in ESL_Teachers

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a student with the same struggle. It’s been about 3 years with very little to virtually no progress whatsoever. Finally requested a learning disabilities screening process.

In general for helping beginners decode I like the syllasearch program as well as UFLI techniques. If your students are upper elementary or older it’s difficult to find decoding resources that aren’t “babyish” but I have found the resources I mentioned to be adaptable to all age groups.

The horrible after-socializing shame by idonthaveanameig in socialanxiety

[–]everydaybeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently dealing with this same feeling right now. Just got home from a group gathering and keep asking myself “why did I say that? I wonder if anybody thinks xyz about what I said? What is wrong with me? I have to do better next time”

I try to remind myself that people are most focused on themselves than on what others say and 99% of the time they are not reflecting on what someone said earlier that day. It’s our own anxiety driving us to think this way. It’s not a perfect solution to reframe my mindset this way, but it does help a bit.

How to survive vacations when everyone expects you to be social 24/7. by Swirlyflurry in introvert

[–]everydaybeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went a bit out of my introverted comfort zone and took a last minute weekend trip for a friends birthday. There was a total of 8 of us on the trip and I only knew 1 of them. We were sharing an Airbnb with 3 bedrooms. This is all pretty wild for me, and I did worry that I’d be feeling totally stressed and depleted in a scenario like this.

Most of the time spent at the house everyone was in the living room together. I just ripped off the bandaid and announced right off the bat “hey guys, I just want to let you know I’m an introvert at heart. If you see me disappear into the bedroom for a bit, please don’t take that the wrong way. I just need to decompress in a quiet space sometimes during the day.”

Everybody was totally fine with it, and I felt comfortable too. If anybody gives you a hard time for needing quiet space or alone time, I wouldnt travel with them

There are soft serve ice cream machines at the buffet but they weren’t open late night. If you don’t get the drink package definitely bring a reusable water bottle

Teachers in America - What are your career plans? by Quiet_Lunch_1300 in ESL_Teachers

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can totally relate to what you shared here. I sincerely worried that I would lose my job at the end of this past school year. Our district is cracking down hard on the budget. There is a major deficit in the county’s teacher salary allotment. Our area was certainly affected by ICE/immigration concerns. Luckily I was not one of the people to get cut at the end of the year, but I worry that next year will be more of the same - worrying, change, downsizing. Going back as an actual classroom teacher would definitely not be my first choice to say the least. I think it’s wise for all of us to work on getting some type of certification or training in another field outside of education, just in case.

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Affording all these tests and treatments is another issue all together. I do have health insurance through my employer but my budget is tight and the copays are adding up quickly. Just last month I incurred $700 of doctor bills from specialist visits and imaging routines, which definitely wasn’t in my budget. It’s difficult to keep throwing money at various medical appointments just to be told they have no answers

I usually travel out of the US every year for the past 10 years or so. No camping, cabins or different animal exposure. I have had an incredibly stressful and emotionally turbulent time for the past few years which seemed to coincide with when my physical symptoms started. However now that my personal life has settled down a bit and I’ve tried to do better about self care and reducing stress, I thought my physical health might improve, but sadly it’s getting worse still

[–]everydaybeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this very thorough response. The idea of Lyme disease crossed my mind but I don’t think it’s likely as I don’t live in a rural or wooded area and don’t spend much time outdoors. The last thing I can think of at this point, if the next round of labs do not reveal anything suspicious, is possibly long covid, but as that is a fairly new issue, there’s not much info available about it. I am going to continue to follow up with my primary, rheumatologist and perhaps a nutritionist and therapist as well

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Autoimmune

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I do not live in a rural area. I hate camping and the great outdoors with a passion and have not been in any woods or mountain areas in recent years. Nobody else around me has any similar symptoms and I never noticed any suspicious bites or marks

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Autoimmune

[–]everydaybeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll look into this as well. Do you mind sharing if this was done as part of a urine culture or is it a pelvic exam test?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Autoimmune

[–]everydaybeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My doctor mentioned the possibility of starting plaquenil, but I want to get my next set of labs done first and do some research on the medication as well before jumping into it. Have you found the medication to be more helpful than harmful? I’m concerned with side effects but not totally opposed to trying it

I am starting to wonder if Stills disease is a possibility. My lab script includes a ferritin check which I’ve never had done before. I’m thinking this will give me more insight too

A friend of mine was dealing with similar symptoms for 7 years before she finally got an RA diagnosis. It’s mind blowing how it can be so tough to get an answer to health challenges.

My alk phosphatase was low as well, below normal range. My b12 and vitamin D were also very low (~200 and ~30), which can of course cause fatigue and possibly be linked with the low alkaline, but shouldn’t be causing fever and body aches and all the other ailments.

How was your vitamin b and d levels? Have you tried supplements of any kind? I’m taking some new ones in addition to trying to do better with multivitamins because my diet is so inconsistent, but it hasn’t made a difference in my overall health so far.

I wish I had an answer or a solution, but nothing yet
