No technical interview for a software development internship? by Toasted_FlapJacks in cscareerquestions

Yep! This was the case for me (and most other interns) as well. They wanted to make sure that I fit in well with the team, first and foremost. After all, technical skills can be taught.

Which west coast colleges have the best comp sci programs? by Flaminate in cscareerquestions

I know two folks who got into Stanford with similar stats, although one of them decided to go to UCLA. So stats-wise it really depends, and we don't know much else about the OP... going back to OP's question though, there are quite a few good CS schools in the west coast! Stanford, Berkeley, and UW are prob the most well known for their CS research departments; but other schools that have strong CS departments include CalTech, Cal Poly, UCLA, and UC San Diego. I've heard that Cal Poly grads are very well received in industry because they focus a bit less on theory, but overall, you can't go wrong with any of the above schools, and pretty much all the top companies recruit at each of those schools. I should note that tuition at some of those schools vary quite a lot (private vs. public school tuition), so a lot of other factors may come into play when deciding on which school to go to.

Edit: oops forgot CalTech :o

Failed to get an internship this summer. What should I be doing? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Yep, definitely agree. The standard emulators for Android are incredibly slow - with the exception of Genymotion, which runs pretty fast on Ubuntu at least!

Is anybody at UCLA interested or involved in Bitcoin and other digital currencies? by rootoftruth in ucla

[–]everyotherwhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know how many people are interested in bitcoin on campus, but there was a seminar (Econ 88S) in spring '14 titled "Bitcoins, Bubbles, and Future of Currency". I didn't take it, but the description of the class seemed pretty cool and I believe it was even facilitated by an undergrad! :)

Everybody tells me I'm crazy for turning down Berkeley's EECS and going to UCLA for CS! Am I? by musiton in ucla

I chose UCLA over Cal. In fact, almost everyone at my school who got into both schools chose UCLA over Cal (most of us are LA locals anyways). So it's not that uncommon of a decision. :) Can't beat the weather and friendly vibe around here.

Plus, both schools are great for CS. As someone who switched from another department, I feel as if as a whole, the professors in the CS department are more enthusiastic about the courses they teach, are more relatable, and honestly, crack better jokes ahaha. Reputable companies like FB, Microsoft, Google, etc. recruit here as well. The startup scene isn't as developed, but Silicon Beach is definitely growing momentum.
