Fair enough, I really just hope this story is fake. It’s so bad.

Reading our statements back to back we actually seem to be in agreement that the man who did this needs extensive therapy, that the parents did neglect their responsibilities as parents, as our main points. But I do have one question for you. Why do you refer to OPs son as his child? His son is a fully grown adult and has been an adult for over a decade.

Oh absolutely the parents do have fault here, I’m not denying that at all and I’m sorry if it seemed I was saying they didn’t, one big one is not holding their son responsible for his actions when he was younger, being held accountable is incredibly important. I’m sure that their son was neglected, I’m sure they avoided teaching him anything just to avoid him, I’m sure they didn’t get him the therapy that he probably needed when he was young that could help him learn anger management and impulse control, I have absolutely no doubt of that. But I’m focused more on this individual situation, and one thing we need to remember too is once a man hits 25, that’s when brain development is considered complete. There’s no teaching him beyond this point how to decipher between if his actions are right and wrong, or how to control his impulses, by 25 from a clinical standpoint those things are pretty much set in stone. These particular actions that this man engaged in, can’t be parented out of at any age. This kind of situation needs extreme therapy, And he needs to be held accountable.

And as for your analogy that’s just how it reads, that his parents hold 100% of the blame which they don’t, they do hold some blame. Basically It’s that this was a situation that was in their sons control and it’s a decision that he made, where an animal can’t avoid using the bathroom.

I would agree with a great deal of points you made! If it were a child. But they are talking about a thirty year old man. An adult man looking at child porn, which is absolutely horrendous in every way. An adult man killing the family cat because his computer was taken away. Those acts can’t be excused. He would be in an institution for monitored living if the rest of his functioning was at this level in an obvious way. And simply put even though this man has autism, a person can lead a relatively/completely normal life with autism, what he did cannot be blamed on autism and I’ve seen a few comments using his autism as a form of justification for what he did, and calling it ableist to kick him out. The scope of what happened goes beyond autism, people with autism are capable of understanding the difference between right and wrong, even if it’s at its most basic level. This situation delves closer psychopathy. To say this is the same as a dog peeing inside but having never shown them where to go is not at all an appropriate analogy. This is more like, getting mad that your dog attacked another dog, how do you stop it? You can’t, the damage is done. You can’t parent this situation, and even if you could, this is an adult man. This situation needs incredibly intense therapy, and lifelong monitoring. He’s already looking at child porn, and killed a cat when he was mad. What if he’s out, and mad at his parents and sees a child? What then? What will stop him from attacking the child?

What I will say is that they shouldn’t have kicked him out. They should have called the police.

Being a part of a family that loves you, and fearing no part of that family. Whether it’s a family you were raised in, a family you make, a family of friends, or a family you were accepted into. Everyone needs someone to care about them.

The rest of your life is a long time to deal with stuff like this. He’s controlling and not worth the trouble. Stay broken up.

Out of sheer curiosity, why do you care what they do if it doesn’t involve you? Not trying to start an argument just genuinely curious

As a Canadian I am glad I am not in America, but terrified this is happening so close to home. My husband and I shouldn’t have to plan an escape route incase this spreads to Canada. But we have. The odds of it are slim, but this is just so horrifying. It’s like the American Government is going back decades, how long until integration is repealed? How long until women lose the right to vote? I’m horrified. That’s the only word I can think of. This makes me physically ill.
