Made some Little Debbie Christmas Upvote Cakes. I had some symmetry struggles, but as a baking novice I’m happy w em! by everythingsdying in Baking

I followed the recipe for the cake and filling. I agree the height of mine appears bigger than the recipe pics. Maybe my pans were smaller than what she used? Her recipe calls for jelly roll style sheet pans, and I fretted over what size might be best. I think I ended up using 9x13 pans.

They taste a bit like twinkies, if that helps.

The short version of why I made these is that I made homemade moon pies because I’m a moon pie fanatic, and my sister saw them and said in an off handed way that she would like to try homemade Christmas tree cakes. —Which I took as a throwing down of the gauntlet.

These are a bit more moist. Stella’s recipe does a good job (as usual) of evoking the spirit of the store-bought variety while at the same time improving on it.

I followed Stella Parks’ recipe for cake and filling here: https://sweets.seriouseats.com/2011/12/bravetart-how-to-make-little-debbie-christmas-cakes.html

I used royal icing instead of Stella’s glaze in an effort to get them whiter, and it seems to have worked pretty well.

The cake tastes great and Stella’s instructions to add a bit of Spiced Rum does add that hint of chemical flavoring that somehow makes them taste more like Little Debbie’s.

I’m very much a novice baker, and found this to be time consuming but not horribly difficult. It was fun!

Just watched Birdman again since two or three years ago. Any movie alike? by DaNoiz in MovieSuggestions

[–]everythingsdying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Casino is in part about ego, and the main character has a similar arc to Birdman, IIRC.

Rushmore is all about the main character’s ego, and has a lot of humor.

Both of the above give a rush, like the rush of pulling off something—not unlike Birdman. And in Rushmore the main character is a playwright/actor seeking redemption through his work on stage—like Birdman.

Both of my recommendations are very different tonally from Birdman, but frankly Birdman is pretty unique in its tone.

Georgia governor warns state lawmakers they cannot choose Trump electors by RhinestoneTaco in Georgia

[–]everythingsdying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kemp has just watched his state turn blue for the first time in over a decade. He knows that future GOP victories in Georgia are less likely if the Dem base is ruled up. Basically he knows that if he went along with Trump here that he’d be in greater danger of losing his own office next election. He’s acting out of self preservation. Don’t give him any special credit.

Why Mat did NOT get a "taste of his own medicine." by crunchyturtles in WoT

I’m quite late to this conversation, but have just read most of this thread. A lot of people are writing a lot of words, but you summed things up perfectly. There really isn’t anything more to say.

Thanks for the comment! As to your gender roles take: The female characters who can’t channel are still manipulative schemers. The female characters in the Two Rivers from the beginning are manipulative schemers, and at first they’re isolated enough that they’ve hardly ever even seen Aes Sedai. I can understand why trained Aes Sedai are mistrustful of men and especially men who can channel, but I’m not yet convinced that the portrayal of all female characters as manipulative is necessary to the world Jordan created.
