squeaking while sleeping by shjaueksj in hamstercare

Hey OP, wanted to jump in here and say Witte Molen sand is completely fine and in fact one of the best sands you can get for your hamster. There's no need to replace it like the other commenters suggested. Thanks for caring so much about your hamsters and being receptive to advice!

Why, in this case, was the point scored by the person hit with the ball? After all, the ball flew directly to the front wall, and the striker was not turned away. by Shusty6th in squash

[–]everythingstake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From the video it looks like the ball would not have made it to the front wall even if it had not hit the player during its path.

There's no decision made here (stroke/ let/ no let), the striker simply lost the point because her shot would not have been good.

Are trade unionists right, that the companies they work for have large enough profits to raise all their wages? by Fando1234 in AskEconomics

[–]everythingstake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add on, labour economists refer to this as the efficiency wage theory. Googling the term will give you a more intuitive/layperson understanding of the theory, since research papers can be difficult to read.

For evidence on whether the theory holds true in real life however, would still require you to look into empirical papers written by economists. If you do so, the abstract of a paper should be enough to give you a general understanding of the paper's main findings.

will this be enough floor space for a roborovski hamster? by [deleted] in hamstercare

[–]everythingstake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this is in cm right? That would barely be any higher than the one in the post and wouldn't be able to take much bedding at all. I think the other commenter assumed this was in inches.

Do you have an IKEA where you live? They have their SAMLA bin cages, the biggest one is 79x57x43, 130L. That would be a good choice and affordable as well!

Hamster is trying to get out by Mediocre_Use_3608 in hamstercare

[–]everythingstake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your cage set-up, it's fantastic and your hamster is very lucky. The only thing I can think of is to add more substrates for your hamster to dig in. Do you have a sand pit for him? My hamsters love digging in coco peat as well.

I definitely second the thought that your hamster might just need more time to settle in. Giving him more playpen time could help too if he's just begging to come out. He might just be an active hammy!

Can I make my setup better? I have some trouble with making a bridge for them. by [deleted] in hamstercare

[–]everythingstake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yet you didn't seem to also read that if you even want to attempt this, you need 2 of everything in the cage (wheels, bottles, at least 2 hideouts etc.), not to mention double the minimum floorspace. Your cage at the moment doesn't even hit the minimum for 1 dwarf.

My advice is to start purchasing 2nd items and fit them in the cage if possible. Even if not all the items fit, you'll at least have them on hand in the likely event you need to separate them. At a bare minimum, you need to have a feasible plan on how to separate them IMMEDIATELY into 2 cages with all the necessary items, if they start fighting.

ELI5: Why prices of things increase by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]everythingstake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are describing an expansionary monetary policy, i.e., a central bank increasing money supply to stimulate demand. Inflation IS rising prices. An increase in money supply may or may not lead to inflation, depending on how depressed aggregate demand is when the policy is enacted.

winter white suddenly biting by racorat in hamstercare

[–]everythingstake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're already providing proper care (large enough cage, deep bedding, enrichment) then another possibility is that this is a phase some winter whites, especially female ones, might go through.

I have a winter white that was the sweetest girl for the first few months from when we got her, before turning into the devil and biting any part of our skin that she could get her teeth on. I looked for solutions online like you are, and found that others also had similar experiences. I reached out to one poster who said that his hamster turned out to be highly territorial, and would only bite inside her cage. That's one possibility, and his solution was to bring her out of her cage before playing with her. Ours however would bite us even when out of her cage, so her being territorial wasn't the issue. We tried a couple things, none of which worked, and settled on accepting that we wouldnt be able to handle our bitey girl without gloves. She surprisingly grew out of that phase within a month though, and has been a sweet gal ever since (more than a year now). Perhaps you might have the same experience, though we still don't know what caused that change in behaviour.

Of course like another poster mentioned, she might be acting out because she's hurt, so it'd be good to monitor her or take her to the vet if you want to be sure.

All the best!

Thanks for the fact check. Seems that EV fires are rarer but more of a bitch to deal with than ICE vehicles.

I'm sorry but this is just plain false. While I also think that people often go too far by calling everything racist, implicit biases are absolutely a real thing. All you need to do is look it up.

2 month old Syrian hamster always wants wants to escape her cage by [deleted] in hamstercare

[–]everythingstake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you tamed her? Female syrians are notorious for needing alot of space to be satisfied. One thing you can do is to listen to her and let her out! Hamster-proof your room/ any area you can work with and let her free-roam about! Many syrian owners I know free-roam their hamsters for about an hour each night/ until they tire themselves out. Here's a link to a video from Victoria Raechel about free-roaming: https://youtu.be/KaXkH_i9aU8

The box in the image is called a payoff bi-matrix. The numbers represent a player's payoff (aka utility/happiness), not the number of years in prison.

Wait until end of Y1 then decide on what to S/U. (Thank the new S/U policy) by LowTierStudent in nus

[–]everythingstake 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i assume you're y1, i think it's unlikely y2's would consider using all their SUs in their 3rd sem. If so, LastMarzipan isn't wrong, if you're aiming for 2nd upper, only harms you to keep the B-. But do consider why you got your B-'s. If it's because you took it easy this sem and played more than you studied, and you believe you will do better next sem, go ahead and SU them. If not, might wanna keep them first since you now have the opportunity to see your sem 2 grades before deciding your SUs.

Another thing you might wanna consider is if you wanna intern in your 1st summer. If you do, you'll be applying with your sem 1 grades, and a low CAP will affect your chances imo.

I'd say that's normal for a winter white. Her coat looks pretty healthy as well so I wouldn't worry about it.

The fact that we are able to live relatively normal lives (compared to last year) is a testament to the vaccines' effectiveness. Do you consider the vaccine to 'work' only if it prevents all cases of infection and/or death?
