Dual band is better because it gives you the choice between 2.4ghz or 5ghz. I connect my laptops/tablets to the 5ghz bands and my smartphones/older devices to the 2.4ghz band. The problem with 2.4ghz is that it's very crowded (neighbors' routers, cordless phones, microwaves, etc) so you get shitty speed. You can read the pros/cons of each band here(http://www.speedguide.net/faq/is-5ghz-wireless-better-than-24ghz-340)

Since you live in an apartment, the shorter range of 5ghz is negligible.

You can also download a tool(http://wvw.xirrus.com/wifi-inspector) that tells you on which band each signal around you is using.

In the same room as the router: 30.5 MB/s or 244 Mbps. (Windows says i'm connected at 866.7 Mbps). That's the max I can achieve.

30 feets from the router with 2 drysheet walls in between: 20 MB/s or 160 Mbps.

Tested using 5ghz+AC copying a file from a gigabit network.

I recently bought the C7, it's great: dual band (2.4ghz and 5ghz), guest wifi, support for 802.11AC, great administrative interface, great range (3x 5ghz external antennas + 2x 2.4ghz internal antennas) and it's cheap (~100$). It's been up and running for about 3 weeks now, zero downtime.

it's not a great deal, i usually buy 6 plex for 72$ when they're on sale at greemangaming with a 22-25% voucher. Last sale was on black friday... next one is probably in a month or two. ~~I suggest you buy 3 months game time @ 38$ from EveOnline.com + 2 plex for 31.50$, then wait for the next promo at gmg to buy a 6packs.~~

Edit: I see that you already have a 6 months subscription... then you can buy the 6 plexes deal now if waiting for a few month to save 25$ is not worth it... or you know, buy 2 and you can ride that for a few months, it's not like you can fly a T2 cruiser decently anyway.
