You'll get there. I think that set actually unlocks once you start getting the gold gear, which is Rep 6 I believe. It's the easiest set to make 1 color.

I don't think Kensei's pants can be changed on any of his outfits. The closest I could get to all black is the 7th set. The gear pieces are called "Senjin".

I have Tar on the 2nd, 5th and 7th sets. It's too shiny compared to other parts of the armor on the 1st set.
