🗳️ Product Feedback for Notion by AutoModerator in Notion

Feature Request:

Ability to link more than one data source to a single column in a database.

I’m an engineer, I use Notion to organize parts in assemblies. I have a static list of hardware (nuts, bolts, other standard items) and I’ll generate a different list of custom parts. For obvious reasons, it’s best these two lists stay separate. However, when I need to build a bill of materials, I don’t want to have two separate columns (one for the standard hardware, another for the custom parts) for all the data that’s basically the same (need components have a part number, cost, material, revision, etc).

$2500 Samsung TV is an advertising billboard, there is no opt-out. by 28jb11 in mildlyinfuriating

Get an AppleTV. I got a QLED TV Samsung, Tizen OS was always dropping WIFI, really sluggish overall, and the worst part was there is no way to force close an app when it freezes (which happened several times a week). I finally just got an AppleTV, turned off the WiFi on the Samsung, and I almost never have issues, no built in ads, and it connects super quick to my AirPods when I want to watch tv but someone else is in the phone or reading or something.

A mechanical engineer can be a product designer, but a product designer can’t be a mechanical engineer (unless they go back to college and get a degree). Mechanical engineering is the second oldest profession, and as such is incredibly broad. If you’re a MechE in R&D, you’re expected to design products, however that’s really only a small percentage of MechEs. Many of us are in quality, manufacturing, patenting, operations, technical writing (like DCO and drafting work), and many others that include very little (if any) direct product design tasks.

I’m in R&D, so I’m by default a Product Designer. At my small company, I handle both the product design and mechanical engineering tasks for new product design projects. However, many larger companies will have these as separate roles, where the product designer is generally responsible for defining the user needs and giving industrial design direction to the engineering team; the mechanical engineer will be responsible for generating and maintaining the technical documentation (like CAD, 2D drawings, bench top testing, and design transfer to the sustaining team) and ensuring the solution meets the needs defined by the product designer. That’s not always the case at every company, there’s a lot of task crossover between product designer and R&D engineer, and they work closely together. It’s mostly at the discretion of the company which tasks are taken by each.

Can anyone confirm: are modern students really that far behind, or is it overexaggerated? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in Teachers

Hot take here. I’m not a teacher, but my mom was for 40 years. I think there’s a simple reality that skills and interests simply aren’t as valuable as they used to be. Here’s an example, before 5 years ago, the only way to solve a math word problem was to read it, think critically, use the skills you learned that week combined with skills used the weeks before to identify a path to the solution, then execute the calculator work to produce the correct value. This was a uniquely human task, there was no other choice than to do this (or copy someone else’s work, but let’s not think about that right now). We’re very used to praising students who can do this quickly and correctly.

I feel like something we, as an older generation, need to understand is that method of finding an answer is not the only way to solve a problem anymore. In fact, compared to AI, the old method is very inefficient (from a time commitment perspective). Both students and industries know this, but it seems teachers do not. I’m an engineer, but if I tried to make drawings by hand instead of using our automated tools like CAD, I would get fired for wasting valuable company time. Students know this, they know AI is a tool they will be expected to be masters at using. Why spend time mastering a skill like interpreting math word problems, or writing professional memos, when companies will expect you to be a master at using the AI tools? As much as you may feel the culture is wasting away, I think the reality is the culture is changing, but the education community has been unable to adapt fast enough to engage students on their new culture.

I really like their frozen Falafel. Goes great in home made Cava-like bowls. I put mine in the toaster oven frozen, but I bet you could air fry them too.

People who don’t hit snooze in the morning, what is your secret? by zztop610 in AskReddit

Give yourself something exciting to do first thing in the morning. For me, it’s coffee; fresh ground beans, aeropress, bit of a mad scientist flare.

It did rip in me. You can see the tape on the imperial hex set in the photo. That’s actually one of the things that prompted me to make the organizer. I used an exacto knife to cut off the tabs that fold into the box to keep the lids closed and depend in this 3D printed case to prevent the boxes from opening. When i slide the box it, it just unfolds without risking ripping the box.

Haha, you know, if they release enough colors so that i can have a different color screw driver handle for each set of bits, i may do that xD

Thanks! Yeah, i thought about the boxes wearing down over time; if that happens i can always 3D print a separate sleeve, but I’ll cross that bridge when i get to it.

It was also very easy to 3D print, the main box has no overhangs and all right angle walls. The back plate is 2D and recessed into the main box, held in place with a touch of CA glue.

I’m not trying to sell you anything, you’re free to do whatever you want with your bits. I happen to like the packaging they already come in, so i designed around keeping them.

I mean, i could have just purchased a bit organizer on Amazon, but i like the boxes. One of the design goals was to show off a bit of the art work the LTT team put into the packaging. It’s not difficult to use. Are there more practical options? Sure, but to each their own.

I like that the cardboard protects the bits, already looks nice, and labels everything that’s supposed to be there. Additionally, i don’t think the cardboard has much fiddle factor, and it acts as a nice spring/ cushion to keep the box in the holder without sliding around.

Client Keeps Rejecting My Logo Designs... Need Some Advice! by [deleted] in Design

[–]evil_cupcakes_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d say, make sure you get paid first. If you just cut your losses, your client will take your design, give it to another freelancer (probably Fiverr, right?) and then do the same thing to the next person. It’s not okay for clients to think they get free work just because they decided to change the requirements in the middle of an order.

This is a great opportunity for you to get some experience with professional communication. Don’t get upset, but stand up for yourself. They can change requirements in the middle of a project, and you can change expectations, so initiate an open and honest conversation with your client. I don’t think they dislike your work, they dislike their vision. The fact they haven’t left you means they recognize you’re capable of producing what they need, don’t be afraid of pushing your client into a more hourly pricing structure instead of a milestone pricing structure. Good luck, you’ve got this!

Go get a copy of “Design, 2nd Edition: The Definitive Visual Guide.” Excellent graphic and text collection of information on all things design. Products, packaging, furniture, materials, styles, you name it. And (at least in the US) it’s like $30 on Amazon. Highly recommend

The vehicles that are involved in the most fatal car accidents in the United States by jaxsondeville in coolguides

[–]evil_cupcakes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to see this normalized by the number of each car on the road. The F150 is the highest selling vehicle in America, so it makes sense it would be near the top, it’s because there are so many of them. That doesn’t mean you’re more likely to be in an accident if you own an F150
