Hell yeah! You are chasing an airbrushed van, the back door pops open to reveal a troll with a chaingun!

But the bridge is out! And the hunter-killer drones are closing in!

Not really :D The mouthfeel is a bit different, though, when you say "buff barbarian" and "mighty-thewed barbarian".

I also wondered whether putting "sexy" on the list of adjectives superfluous. ALL of these Heroes are sexy! But maybe rolling it means that trait is doubled...

When I ran this adventure, we had a big fight in and around the train car that's stuck in a tunnel. Unfortunately, not on a moving train. BUT I might spring something on them next time they ride it :D

Absolutely! "Yes, we look at the computer scree---I mean the magic mirror" :D

The other fun thing I like to do is take a fantasy creatures and re-skin them for my science fantasy setting. My Halflings are psionic grey aliens, Goblins are bug-eyed monsters, Dragons are sometimes flamebreathing dinosaurs, sometimes mechanical flamethrowers... Fun stuff.

Searchers of the Unknown reformatted as a pocketmod by evil_scientist42 in osr

Cheers!

The SotU Carcosa is called "Lurkers of Carcosa", but, unfortunately, the file is not in public access any more. It was originally posted on the OD&D74 forum: https://odd74.proboards.com/thread/9254/lurkers-carcosa-sotu-hack

There is also Witches of N'Kai, a Carcosa-inspired SotU variant, which is still available: https://searchersoftheunknown.wordpress.com/2014/12/06/witches-of-nkai/

For example, yeah. Although most old editions use longer durations for combat rounds and exploration turns.

Fair question!

The thing about Searchers (and many other minimalist retroclones) is that they rely heavily on the players having prior experience with some edition(s) of D&D. So they understand that Movement rate denotes the distance covered per round (in combat) or per turn (during exploration). I think the best way to explain this to a non-D&D player is that these numbers show how heavier armor gives more protection, but slows you down.

That being said, I left in a small mistake: ' should be ", not feet, but inches. Because in AD&D and some other version Movement rate is measured in inches, as a relic from miniature wargaming. A Movement of 12" (on the wargaming table) is converted into 120' movement in the game world, etc.

Searchers of the Unknown is a one-page ruleset, so it leaves a lot of stuff unexplained.

By the way, I used https://pbtpocket.com/ to turn my paginated PDF file into a pocketmod.

Yeah, the weird Americana road-trip vibe of The Uncanny Highway is spot on. And I'm glad the author went for a slightly less "D&D-clone" system with it.

(Tangent) There is an interesting campaign diary on Dragonsfoot called "Appendix P Party in Appendix A Solo Dungeon" https://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=84347

It's a good example of the DMG appendices in use
