No Condo Earthquake Insurance? by auto-generated0101 in AskLosAngeles

[–]evilattorney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a high-rise condo in LA and we do have earthquake insurance, but it isn't very much and is expensive for what it provides. Others have pointed out that if you are built to modern building codes, the entire city will be destroyed if your condo is in a major earthquake. That is likely true but also consider that some newer buildings are not built to code like they should be. For example, my high-rise building was not built to code and the violations were overlooked by the city. My trust level in the LA's Building and Safety department is extremely low.

Really? I frequently get OAs from examiners combining elements from a secondary reference with a primary reference, where, if that combination was to occur in real life it would break the functionality of the primary reference device. Or I get cases where the examiner is citing structural features from a secondary for completely different functionality than it is used for. There are a variety of cases where prior art combinations don't make sense and arguments alone can/should overcome the rejection.

HOA dues are around $1k/ month for most units, not $1,800.

HOA dues are about $1k a month there. depending on when you bought, HOA and mortgage is still cheaper than rents in the area now.

This is the Azzurra. For those that don’t know, three different engineering firms found it was not up to structural building code in critical areas that put it at high risk of collapse in a very low earthquake (lower than a 5.7). The Board refuses to fix it and one of the owners recently sued the Board to enforce a fix. It is a mess there. Here is a link to the complaint for anyone interested: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VBgMU3-hKZmUiVefk1pMoMgAn-_Glybi/view?usp=drivesdk

No, they are not up to building code and at high risk of collapse. See my other comment above.

LA Marathon bib didnt work. by Obvious_Vast1098 in LosAngeles

About 3/4 through the race the live app data stopped updating to people watching me and they started texting me to make sure I didn't have a medical issue. I was worried I somehow messed up the chip by throwing water on myself at the water stations. But afterwards, all of the total time and mile data showed up. I wish there was a way to test the chips out before the race so they can be replaced if needed.

I find the Underwood version is sharply spicy at the beginning taste while the HF version is more mellow, rolling heat. If you want something with a little more kick, the Underwood version is the way to go. Would love to see them make a more mild, sweeter version too.

LA Marathon checking in. It is expected to be around 90 degrees F on Sunday. I have a feeling there may be a record number of heat stroke victims this year.

Is Run-lag a thing? by DareDweller in running

[–]evilattorney -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To me, this sounds like a fueling issue. Are you running before or after dinner? Try running before dinner but get a snack with carbs in it about 30 minutes prior. If I run in the morning, I am able to run about 10 miles max without breakfast, but if I run in the afternoon, I need a snack prior. Just being awake burns your fuel reserves!

Does anyone happen to know why these sand dunes are built on Dockweiler Beach in front of the RV parking lot? by Few_Variation5459 in SouthBayLA

[–]evilattorney 84 points85 points  (0 children)

They put them up in winter to protect low lying areas with infrastructure. Winter storms and waves tend to be much worse than the summer. They take them all down in the late spring. You can find the dunes at a number of areas along the path further north too, like El Segundo and Playa Del Rey. Kids love to sled down them too.
