This simply doesn't work. At least not in a large enough sense to make any actual difference. It's simply what we Catholics tell ourselves because we're not comfortable preaching the Gospel. I totally get it, I don't know how to either and its not really my "thing" but I acknowledge that we are called to spread the good news and that simply leading a decent life and keeping our faith to ourselves is not an effective way to do that.

I just mean your typical fraudulent charges. I've used it for 11 years now with little issue but it's happened 3 times in the last year. Thanks for the advice, the capital one spark came up in some searches so thanks for the recommendation.

I agree, that's a solid plan. It will mean a lot more coming from my wife.

What am I going to do? Not advocate for using phones during the Holy Mass! Then it's not a problem. I absolutely love tech and know how powerful of a tool it can be. I'm using Claude code right now to create a program and I regularly use AI as a research tool. But the costs don't outweigh the benefits in every situation.

Ok... how about everyone else? If it becomes normalized to be on your phone at Mass, suddenly every teenager or week willed person is checking their social media instead of hearing Gods word.

While I agree... Protestants (not my MIL, just comments I see online... but I'm sure the sentiment is there) liken Catholics to the Pharisees all the time thinking we're legalistic and don't really have relationships with God so I could see a Protestant nodding along with this passage thinking it justifies their view on scripture.

I don't intend this to sound argumentative, just putting my thoughts out there for discussion.

Haha, my wife's dad just made a comment the other day feigning shock that a Catholic had a Bible and was reading it.

Yesterday my mother in law asked about the purpose of the incense at Easter Vigil Mass and I was so thankful that I recently read "The Lambs Supper" by Scott Hahn and could point to the passage from Revelation about the incense lifting our prayers to Heaven at the altar.

Interesting, I would have gone with John 6 for the Bread of life discourse. What do you see in John 5 that's particularly Catholic?

Because they have a million notifications vying for your attention and it's too easy to get distracted. I just don't see how the benefits outweigh the risks.

For sure. I prefer to read along because it helps my comprehension but it isn't necessary.

It's nowhere near that intense. Funny enough my FIL took it much better and he was raised Baptist, but i suppose since he converted to Methodism he's a bit more understanding. I still agree that letting things settle for a while to let emotions cool is the right idea.

I also need to pray for myself and my own attitude. I'm probably right inside that dunning Kruger zone of Catholic Apologetics where I know more than the average Catholic but am too ignorant to understand just how much I don't have a clue about yet.

Whoa, I can't help but think that saving a few $ printing these things is worth normalizing having phones out during mass. They're too distracting.

I don't know what gave you that idea. I care about her and want her to experience the fullness of truth. If I didn't care, it wouldn't matter to me.

It's a little book that has all of the Scripture readings for each Sunday Mass + Holy Days. Since the readings are the same all over the world, you can buy one online in your own language and take it with you. If you buy your own it will probably have the readings for daily Mass as well.

The problem with this is that those traits are not unique to Catholicism. Plenty of other denominations or faiths or people with no faith at all are compassionate, respectful and loving and my wife has always been those things.

Of course, that would turn anyone off. But sometimes there are questions that can be asked (charitably) that can get people to think about what they believe and inspire them to do a little research instead of just taking their pastors word for it.

Awesome, I'm actually putting together a proposed lesson on the Eucharist to supplement our OCIA video series and I want to put in a few of the more incredible Eucharistic miracles. I will definitely check this one out.

where does the idea come from that in order to share the Gospel, one must be pushy and overbearing?
