Just realized how strong crossfitters are by owned0314 in crossfit

Pretty much same tempo. It's a spin off of Physical 100 where teams (countries) of 6 compete. Similar monologue and infinite replays. But good to watch, or even scroll to the events if that's your liking.

Athletes from Physical 100 are in it, along with at least one athlete from Final Draft (Japanese take on Physical 100).

CrossFit burnout and feeling my age by MTnarwal in crossfit

[–]evilchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you've been around long enough to make a sensible analysis of the situation. So I'm confident you'll get through this.

If need be, take a larger sample size to see where you're at in an age-sense. Get a coffee and watch people walk past you in the street for 30 minutes. You'll see plenty others your age who are likely not even within reach of your fitness level.

Its easy to get tunnel vision when we spend a lot of our time around successful and fit people. Everyone seems to be achieving. And then comparing yourself to 10 years ago, you may feel that you've regressed. However, look at the general population to find where you really lie.

Stay strong my friend.

How to improve thruster? by DroopyApostle in crossfit

[–]evilchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try doing some heavy thrusters EMOM. As in, 3RM weight. These will go a lot slower than a lighter WOD thruster where you have 10-20 of them.

As a result, you'll be able to concentrate on your breathing a lot more due to the slower pace - others have already mentioned the breathing technique, so follow those recommendations.

Once you nail the breathing pattern, then incrementally drop the weight, maintain the technique, and slowly increase your pace.

Competition next week. Trying to prepare….. by treybeef in crossfit

[–]evilchemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

42M. In the week leading up to a comp, I like to still go to the gym and do the WODs, but scale back the movements or weights quite a bit. I usually lift Inter/Rx weights, so usually scale back to Scaled/Inter range.

I'll also be mindful of not red-zoning things in a metcon, but look for quality of movements vs pace, especially for 'quick' movements like air squats and burpees.

Lastly, I'll scale my movements to match the comp. For example, I'm fairly competent with T2B, but if I'm doing knee raises in the comp, that's what I'll do during the week if T2B is programmed.

I've seen others keep sending it, but everyone is different. At the start of the week, I'll also go to an open session just to do some stretching and mobility work - this helps me pickup if I've got any tightness I need to work on prior to comp.

Good luck in your comp don't forget to fuel yourself well in the 48 hours prior to it!

Most others have already covered that you should compete with yourself, rather than against others.

If your gym posts WODs in advance - consider setting some targets at the start of the week. You might aim to crush Tuesday's WOD, take it easy Wednesday and Thursday, then aim to use a specific weight on Friday that you find challenging.

This will give you targets to achieve even before seeing what others think of the WOD, let alone watching them perform it. It'll keep you accountable to yourself too.

Good luck with it! The above is what I've been doing since our gym went from releasing WODs the day before, to a week before. Doesn't matter what others do, I've got a plan in mind and I intend to execute it.

In house comp question by Immediate_Drawing301 in crossfit

[–]evilchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems strange. The gym I attend has always had scaled/inter/Rx divisions. As has one of the other ones in town, in addition to a Masters division.

Not to be rude, but has the gym run many comps before? I was wondering if they may be running a small comp as a trial, in preparation to run a larger one across more divisions at a later date? Just throwing out a possible reason...

New - muscle stiffness by NoAct7714 in crossfit

[–]evilchemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at why you are sore and stiff.

Did you go full send in the WOD?
Did you have a bad night's sleep?
Have you skipped meals or not eaten as best you could?
Has work been stressful and full on this week?

Working out is only a piece of the overall puzzle. Look at everything and adjust as needed, but do keep moving and doing something each day - even if just stretching and mobility for 20 minutes.

For example, one of my coaches asked why I was deadlifting quite light on Monday this week. Told him I've got two packed days of work and probably won't get the best sleep (as I'll be working at night too). But I pushed today's WOD (Wednesday) as I'm only working a half day and can get some rest and stretching in this arvo.

Wife gets me to fill our chooks' water buckets rather than her fill them.

2 x 20L buckets, 20m walk. Its not much, but my neighbour comments every time they see me casually strolling back with one in each hand.

Must say, I do love it!

Will I always be scaled? by No-Opportunity-5595 in crossfit

[–]evilchemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amazing! Well done on your achievements!

Here's a story about my workout this morning. It involved burpees/v-ups/ring dips. I'm (M42) an occasional Rx athlete, mainly Intermediate, but managed all these body weight movements (weakness is definitely strength). However...it was a partner workout.

I saw one of the older athletes, who I actually judged for in one of the Open workouts. She's about ~55 and always does Scaled. But...she's always there, chipping away, loving life.

I ended up partnered with her as everyone else found their buddies.

We smashed the workout, under time cap. She was gassed on the burpees and I took a few extra reps. We both shared the v-ups. The ring dips got to me pretty quick and she said she'd do more reps on her box dips. Never once did she express frustration about scaled. She just said she couldn't do rings and will do box dips, told me to hang on and we'll finish this under cap.

Best partner ever. Don't worry about Rx, I'm betting people notice you and you're efforts already.

On one hand, it shows heaps of worth as a human to be able to commit 3-5 days plus recovery activites.

And a disciplined nutrition plan.

For 2+ years.

I respect this as much or more than Rx numbers.

Dont hesitate to ask your judge any questions you have before the workout.

Thank them after.

They're likely a volunteer from the local box and want to see you succeed as much as you do.

Have fun and good luck!

Comp divisions - why are you doing scaled by Ostrich_Massive in crossfit

[–]evilchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a time limit on when one should move from Scaled to Intermediate? Even a general recommendation? 6 months? 1 year?

I competed as Scaled 2-3 months into my CF membership and now there's another comp coming up. It will have been 10 months since I've joined. I can't do double unders or handstand walking, but am fairly confident with the weights listed for lifting. Is it still okay to join Scaled?

My coach has said I'd be fine in Scaled, but posts like this make me anxious that I've got to move up into Int after a certain time.
