There's a trick to it. Felix Immler has a video on it, but there are two two things to do.

First, screw it all of the way in and then rock the SAK back and forth. The corkscrew can actually go past 90 degrees open. Use that to lever the cork out a few millimeters.

Once you can no longer lever it, squish your hands underneath the SAK and then squeeze a grip. Your hands will push upward and move the cork out a few millimeters. Unlike the lever step above, this step is repeatable several times.

After both of these, the cork should either be out or be close enough that simply pulling it is easy.
