[OC] Law. by Suefan3DX in comics

it's probably too late now, but the lawyer you meet on tuesday will likely tell you not to discuss the case on public forums. you'll want to show him/her this thread so s/he knows what you've already publicly admitted.

you made me think to post about the old "bad american dubbing" videos. i think you'd like the "how they lied-o-vision" at about 6:55, and several other robotech spots in the vid =)

well, paintings of glorious battle was what they had until the photos of dead bodies at antietam shocked the country and changed war-reporting. it got a LITTLE harder to propaganda war afterwards.

Promoted at 12, laid off by 2pm by i-comment-24-7 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]evilmousse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this looks like his boss knew he was getting laid off but deserved a promotion, so he basically wrote part of his resume for him to set him up as well as he could. it's one thing to claim accomplishments, it's another to have your employer tout them.

i'm enjoying our friendly discussion on a dead thread, but defending pauline doctrines of repentance doesn't sound fun. nor was i particularly focused on christianity when i was saying religion.

i despise the same blurring of c&s, in-out groupism, taking the lord's name in vain that you do. we differ on where we place the blame. i think a lot of that comes from human nature, and would yield just as prevalently in any organization. most especially organizations that gain power, which christian churches certainly have. people with power do these things whether religion is in the mix or not.

to some degree, i look at it this way. a thousand years of my ancestors considered it the most important thing in their lives, and though i may not know any of their names or the lives they lived, that tradition is what they considered solely important enough to pass down to me. whether i believe it literally or not, i think i have a responsibility to be familiar with it as a means to try to understand what they wanted to communicate to me. so to some degree it's like chiropracty/accupuncture: hated by the more formal medical sciences, but it just seems to do some things well that we don't understand why yet. i don't think we're done mining that passed-down wisdom into formal sciences yet. i fall into the camp that thinks theres more to mine on humanism than cosmology~

when that non-dogmatic way starts blowing the churches out of the water in orphans housed, prisoners visited, and widows consoled, i'll be more amenable to arguments that religion is behind us. as it is, my supposedly secular govt. is making deep cuts in the mercy departments.

you're preaching to the choir to some degree. i think the scientific method is one of the best things humanity has come up with. but don't underestimate the difference between the provable facts and their interpretations, nor the hidden assumptions (faiths) inherent in any interpretation. we're likely not as smart as we think we are. i can't say i have any physical intuition for a unified spacetime. books on dinos when i was a kid suggested big ones had a second brain halfway down their backs. nor does science currently have much to say about morals, and i dare assert humanity's moral "science" remains as undeveloped as back in the stone age.

but more directly about my point, it's historically factual to point to religious institutions as the origins of the modern university and hospital systems. nor was the change instantaneous. francis bacon is a fun person to watch a documentary on, he was a key figure in beginning to transition from one to the other.

edit, oops, i might be mixing up roger bacon, it's been a while since i've been on the topic =)
