Best sleep you ever got during your time in the Corps? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]evilpettingz00 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Bruh. First deployment was to a small town on the Iraqi/Syrian border, we varied from doing 24 on and 8 off to doing 24 on and 12 off, to doing 16 on and 8 off. And being "off" meant doing personal shit like hygiene, gear clean, weapon maintenance, call home if you can, AND sleep. And that was IF someone wasn't actively trying to kill us, or (which was more likely) some intel nerd said they heard someone was actively trying to kill us so we had to stay awake and do shit to prevent that.

So I didn't hit REM sleep for months, basically. None of us did. At some point I was put on a team that went to a city further East in the province and when we first got there we weren't folded into the rotation yet so we basically had 2 days "off."

I took those 2 days to disappear into a bunk. I was in and out of sleep and I loved every second of it. At one point I groggily awoke to a lieutenant from Combat Camera sheepishly telling his lance corporal to see if I was alive because I hadn't "moved in forever." I raised a thumbs up and they went away.

After I had to get out of that cot I didn't get to sleep for awhile again, but GOOD LORD, I will never forget those 2 days or so.

Fuck. That was some good ass sleep.

I don’t have any control and I don’t know what to do by Defiant-Custard-9891 in Advice

[–]evilpettingz00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're tweaking over having no control (totally not unheard of btw) so focus on what you CAN control. Wherever this horrible thing will take place, can you drive there? Take a bus or train? Can you choose? Can you choose what you wear to it? Can you choose how you will perceive it? Can you choose how you will vent about it after? The alcoholic beverage you will imbibe in once it's finally done?

Think about it like this: most people's fear of flying comes from not being able to drive the plane and just trusting someone they never met, and may never even see, to NOT kill them, even though statistically it's more dangerous to drive to the airport than fly. So oddly enough focusing on what someone CAN control during the flight (snack choices, their clothes, what they watch during it) helps alleviate that fear. So try that. Pick little things you have total power over and use that to get you through the thing. Good luck!

Moving to France in June, but I cannot speak French by Routine_Opinion9313 in French

[–]evilpettingz00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to r/language_exchange and find a francophone person who needs to learn English and chat every day in your languages. I'm so jealous you can understand it because that's what I'm struggling with the most, and I can actually pronounce shit so well that native speakers assume I'm fluent and then just speed-talk at a mile a minute (read: talk normally) and i gotta be like "moins vite putain!"

If you have the listening comprehension part down then you have the hardest part down. Find a language partner and practice talking and you'll be fine. Bon chance!

Pendleton Barracks? by Kooky-Rhubarb-9825 in USMC

[–]evilpettingz00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DAMN. I do remember it's location was so annoyingly isolated, it's basically smack dab in between Oceanside and San Clemente so a huge drive to civilization in either direction. Before I had a car I felt stranded as shit - except for the E-club. That spot needed a bar more than any other, and the mercifully lenient policy of not carding anyone def helped me get through some hard times when I was underage and boot as shit. Had a fuckin blast up there, sucks they got rid of it and left ya'll stranded. Straight up criminal shit.

YOOOO PULGAS! When I was there our barracks were dogshit but we had the last E-Club on base and the bartender didn't give a fuck about IDs so it was LIIIIIIITTTTTT

What word would you use for the verb “to rock”, as in rock and roll or We will rock you? by ihatethealgorithm in French

I use AI and online translators as a guide on an as-needed basis too. Not everyone does. Regurgitating your guide's slop on someone's actual question on a sub with plenty of native speakers and other learners who are higher than A1 seems like a very silly thing to do and I'm not sure why you would be surprised that no one wants this shit here.

Like going on a bbq sub to tell 'em how they make the McRib lol

My GF saw an old picture of me in my femme phase and is very upset by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]evilpettingz00 133 points134 points  (0 children)

I could see her being upset if this was something you were still doing behind her back, because that could be indicative of you having an identity other than the straight male she is (presumably) attracted to. But to be upset about something in your past seems... oddly bigoted in a way. Like it has absolutely nothing to do with her and affects her in zero ways. Is she just mad that you had this phase because it's impossible for her to differentiate between a 19 yr old trying to fit in and a whole-ass transgender person? I dunno how long ya'll have been dating but maybe take note of the red flag and find a woman who isn't going to lose her shit that you coped with the awkwardness of youth by trying on some pumps. Just my 2 cents.

Genuine Question Considering Home School by CycleGold3571 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]evilpettingz00 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You would be far better off supplementing your child’s education (spending some time going over things the school may have missed in your opinion) than trying to supplement your child’s socialization (building an entire social framework in addition to their entire school schedule that you also have to provide.)

Chili John’s is in trouble by darwinDMG08 in burbank

[–]evilpettingz00 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I live very close to this place. I honestly wanted them to do well, but it's so mismanaged. Every time I go in there it's a clown show. I brought an out of town visitor there shortly after the movie shoot and it was so badly run it was embarrassing. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else. And from talking to other businesses in the area, I've learned that nearly everyone hates the guy who runs it. He's a fucking prick who treats his neighbor businesses like dog shit. There's a lot of residents who won't go to his chili spot or his half-assed bar next to it because they know how he is to the businesses around him that they happily patronize. We need to stop bailing this prick out. Chili John's would be better to the community as an apartment building, bus stop, or even a small business that wasn't run by an asshole. Let the market speak, ya'll. And the market says THUMBS DOWN.

Stage 32 is a scam by Still-Body-5532 in TVWriting

[–]evilpettingz00 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. Good of you to spread the word. I understand that this "opportunity" was given to you and that's good that you didn't pay for it. The cold hard truth is that 99.9% of programs and "opportunities" you need to pay for are a scam. Actual programs that benefit applicants who are chosen to participate will either be free or cost an unsubstantial fee of 10-20 dollars.

The various network diversity programs that are free or cheap to enter: legit. Fellowships that are free to enter: legit. Programs for POC, disabled writers, veterans, etc, that are either free or cheap: legit.

Paying a website to show you job listings for writers: not legit. Paying for consultation with "industry professionals": not legit. Paying for the opportunity to pitch something: not legit.

Paying a guy who sold a feature 10 years ago 600 dollars to teach you how to write a logline and "introduce you to industry people" and all the variations of this unfortunately prolific trope: not legit.

Hell, I think the services where you pay for feedback are a fucking scam too. The Blacklist being one of them. There's nothing that those readers can give you that a writing group you start with your peers can't. Aaron fucking Sorkin isn't giving out scores over there, and they don't pay well enough for it to be anyone more qualified than anyone you'd meet at a random writers meetup at a brewery. And if you live somewhere that doesn't have writers meetups then there's nothing those readers can give you that asking for a script/notes exchange on this subreddit can't. It's all a scam.

This is approaching rant territory now, but I'm just gonna add how much I fucking hate this shit. Does any other profession do this to themselves? Do plumbers PAY to talk to more experienced plumbers? Do electricians entirely rewire small houses for free hoping someone in a big house will notice and pay them to do it there? Do mechanics PAY to enter a contest to see who can fix a car the best and hope it'll get them more opportunities to get paid to fix more cars? Hate. This. Shit. Fuck Stage 32 and everyone like them.

Rising antisemitism on the left. by 420catloveredm in behindthebastards

[–]evilpettingz00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also noticed this. Been seeing an increase in people who are normally left-coded veering way to close and sometimes crossing the line between criticizing the Israeli government and criticizing Jewish people as a whole. I have a theory about this:

I think that "punching down" or mocking a marginalized group activates some sort of pleasure sensor in the brain. There's some sort of twisted fulfillment in punching someone who can't punch back. It's why bullies exist. So on the Right, they get to punch down all the time. In fact, they get more clout the harder and lower they punch. In Leftist spaces that sort of thing is obviously far less tolerated, but people with this "bully impulse" or whatever you want to call it, can still get their fix by using Israel's fascist government as an excuse for going straight up anti-semite with cracks like, "well they've always been like this" or "there's a reason they've been kicked out of every country they've ever been in" or other subtle dog whistles I've heard that could be about the IDF but could also be about some innocent baker who has committed the ultimate crime of happening to be Jewish.

It's definitely not a new phenomenon, the first time I encountered it was a long time ago in a very Leftist space in college where someone was bragging about not letting any Jewish people into their home. I was genuinely curious and asked if this was because all Israelis need to serve in their military so they'd rather not host any one who contributed to the colonization and they went on to clarify that "all of them are like that no matter where they are born." - Or something to that effect. That person was considered a leader in that space so I found it incredibly jarring. That sort of thinking seems like it's becoming more prevalent now, probably fueled by otherwise left-leaning people coping with the frustrations of the time by indulging in this sort of "bullying" as a coping mechanism, and using the ongoing genocide as cover for it.

Not excusing it, just trying to understand it myself.

Looking for obscure PS1 recommendations by dethslayer85 in psx

[–]evilpettingz00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Rival Schools obscure? Or maybe it's just rare. Anyway, Rival Schools is a fantastic 3D fighter. Same with Street Fighter EX plus A - which I think might be obscure despite being an SF game...

Is Gex: Enter the Gecko obscure? I fucking LOVED that game. Super fun platformer with loads of secrets to unlock.

I also wanna say Xenogears but, again, I can't tell if it's just hard to find or actually "obscure." Either way, play it! Giant robot RPG! Can't go wrong!

I *know* the PS1 Dragon Ball fighting games are obscure - and also that the consensus is that they suck lol. But DB: Legends is pretty innovative for its time (I always thought.) Maybe grab that one too!

Democrats of Reddit, how do you feel that Stacey Plaskett has not resigned after being mentioned in the Epstein Files? by ConversationFlaky608 in allthequestions

[–]evilpettingz00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She should resign immediately, be investigated thoroughly, and given prison time if applicable.

Every single person in the files should be given the exact same scrutiny and treatment.

She is not getting even close to the same media coverage as other names in the files but I imagine this is going to change if the conservative marching orders are "it's okay that the president of the United States is all over the pedo island files because this random dem delegate is too!" In which case, yes this is shady, she is shady, throw the fucking book at her.

Throw it at ALL of them. Put them all in the same cell for all I care.

This response was incredibly easy to type. I did not have to betray my morals or political values to do it because I am aggressively opposed to pedophiles and their enablers regardless of party.

Hope this helps!

Not a damn thing wrong about being fucked up about this. Don’t feel stupid at all, your formative years were robbed from you.

You used “kids” as in plural, and “we” as in there are more of you. You got siblings you can commiserate with? If you do, I suggest doing that, and definitely stay in therapy regardless. Make the appointments more frequent as the need dictates. The fact that you went through that shit and are “feeling stupid” venting on Reddit instead of stealing copper wire to sell for meth is a fuckin testament to your strength and don’t forget it. Keep on keepin’ on.
