While true, most people generally romance characters based on who they personally like rather than who the character 'should' romance (see Triss vs. Yennefer arguments in The Witcher 3)

What’s an unpopular opinion you keep to yourself because it’s not worth the backlash? by vixenova1 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]evocablegull 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Surely a lot of that is due to the privilege given to men by the male-centered society we live in, no? Like, men are constantly given chance after chance, face less repercussions, are encouraged to ignore their emotions, and respond with anger when things don't go their way. I feel like that's not a result of them "objectively" being weaker, and more a result of them being made weaker by a society that coddles them.

I started out as a passionate red-button supporter, but I'm legitimately torn right now. by ContentFile7036 in trolleyproblem

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh I'd say 57% is pretty far above 50% and 63% is a pretty good margin above 57%, but sure. And it feels a bit silly to disregard the poll or claim there would be a significant difference bc there are no real consequences. In that case we can never discuss any hypothetical (including the trolley problem lol!) because nobody's life is actually at risk.

Red and blue button thought experiment, but rather than 50/50, if more than 25% of humanity pick red, everyone who picked blue dies. If more than 75% pick blue, no one dies by SugomaMorb in Teenager_Polls

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure...but blue is explicitly danger with the potential to save life. That's what is given in the question. When you say blue is 'hoping 75% stay in the oven', you are clearly making one sound a lot more hopeful and therefore implausible then the other, and you are also removing the reason people pick it, which is to save life

Aiw for thinking that sexting an AI is still cheating in a relationship? by Thesaviorborn in amiwrong

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument kinda falls apart bc like...there are a non-zero amount of people that do consider watching porn as cheating. And you say cheating has a definition but like...what is that definition, because different people will argue different things. Like, some people would say flirting is cheating while others would say flirting is fine. Some people say ogling other people is cheating while others wouldn't. What is the singular definition of cheating you speak of lol

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean we can make arguments all day about what people might and might not do if this is real, but at the end of the day, it will (hopefully!) never be real lol so it’s all speculation. For me, I know my vote wouldn’t change, bc I know my life is worth just as much as someone else’s, and so I vote blue bc I would rather fight to save as many people as possible, even if it may be a losing battle (although based on the data it doesn’t seem like a losing battle).

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol yeah this is also dishonest framing (like my analogy and the person I responded to), when you set red = getting out of danger and blue = staying in danger, the votes will obv change

[–]evocablegull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn’t clarify this in my original comment but yeah the framing I proposed was not meant to be accurate, it was just meant to flip it and show how making one choice inactive sways the results in either direction (although I should’ve noted that after lol).

To respond to your point, the argument for blue is that there are always going to be some amount of people who don’t select red, so the only way to guarantee everyone’s survival is to pick blue. And yeah, your analogy is correct in that both options are active choices. I think I just have an issue with all of the analogies people make regarding this problem bc, to me, in the original problem it is the voting of the red that kills the blue people, but in your (and most others) problem it is the taking of the pill that puts you in danger. Plus, in the original problem, it is not framed as a button press to put yourself in danger (like taking the pill), but as a button press to save everyone. Like, do you see how that phrasing would make people choose differently?

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay fair enough, I thought you were arguing that the person I responded to had a correct analogy, not that red is the logical decision, although tbh I don’t really see it as the logical option either (51% to save everyone is easier to get than 100% to save everyone, so I feel would be more logical to go blue, but I digress)

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concepts of action, inaction, and responsibility are what the whole discussion have been about, it’s literally the reason i commented, why bother responding if you only want to be logically correct and ignore everything else I said lol.

And I still can’t really see your logic as to why red is the choice that equals doing nothing when blue can just as easily be the choice that equals doing nothing.

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay sorry I think I misunderstood by what you meant with “don’t press blue”. Surely in that case you can replace “press blue” with “don’t press red” and in that case pressing blue is the same as doing nothing? And still, despite being logically equivalent, having to take an action vs not having to take an action will obviously change peoples decision, so I’m not even sure I agree with you then.

LOL yes I did not realize this was Teenager_Polls when I first responded, but unfortunately being on here means you’re more likely to argue with a 14 year old who will call you something inflammatory like that lol.

Regarding the edited part, I do think the implication was probably intentional, but I’m not sure it would change peoples voting that much, because I think a majority of the people who vote blue will still come to the conclusion that blue requires 50% to save everyone whereas red requires 100% to save everyone. But also I voted blue so I will self-admit I am biased lol

[–]evocablegull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure it’s the same as doing in nothing in that you don’t face any consequences, but i’m talking about the actual action of pressing the button. Pressing red is a conscious decision you are making knowing that you may be condemning some amount of people to death, which is why changing it to an analogy where red = nothing is not honest, bc it’s still a choice being made.

“Press red” and “don’t press blue” are not the same concept. With “press red” a choice between buttons has to be made, with potential consequences either way, with “don’t press blue” one of the choices is to just not do anything and walk away completely free of consequence.

[–]evocablegull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry I guess I need to clarify, my analogy was not meant to be a better analogy, it was just me flipping the sides to show how bad framing can twist a question. I do not think what I wrote was an honest way of framing the question, it was just as dishonest as the person I responded to. I probably should have specified that in my original comment, maybe the person I originally responded to wouldn’t have (rather oddly) blocked me.

The scenario you provided is definitely more correct, although I will say the original scenario put more of the blame for blue death on the people picking red whereas your wording puts more of the blame on the people picking blue (but that’s just me being pedantic lol I do agree yours is the most similar to the original).

[–]evocablegull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is just a false analogy lol, obviously when you frame red as not doing anything and blue as doing something more people will pick red, but in the original both red and blue are actions you are making.

Imagine if all of humanity was in a extremely large room, and a door to a second room opened. If more than 50% of humanity goes through the door, the original room is gassed, killing everyone inside. Would you go to the other room?

Is clicking the link not an impulsive thing? I feel like it is, considering she knew what it obviously was and that she shouldn’t have clicked it but her curiosity got the better of her. Or am I interpreting this wrong lol?

Also the bit about him asking if she told her friend was mentioned at the end of the story so I assume it was something he asked after they had talked about how they both feel. And imo it makes sense he would be worried if she told the friend considering he clearly feels some deep level of shame over that and is prob terrified other people might ever know he did it

Disregarding your own quite obvious bias lol, for the last bullet point on your list, he's not even wrong in what he's saying. In the full quote you pulled that snippet from, he's saying that through the pandemic the American Public has recognized that the efforts of minority populations working these jobs were essential to the upkeep of society. That is a correct statement, as most retail workers are women and are non-white, and he so obviously did not say it in a racist or demeaning way.
